Our future is looking bright

Looking at this team right now on paper, I'd say we have a pretty good lineup.

The additions to the defense are what really jump out at me. We didn't bring in any marquee names, but instead signed guys that fit the system and have potential.

Kenyon Coleman should provide a big upgrade at the RDE spot immediately. Some may go as far as saying that Kimo was the worst starting DE in the league last season. He constantly got pushed around and looked lost most of the time.

David Bowens was another solid pickup. He installs more depth into our LB corps and has proven to be very effective as a passrush specialist. He can come in on 3rd down/passing situations and really give our passrush an added boost coupled with Bryan Thomas.

The draft was mainly focused on the defensive side of the ball as well. Mangini and Tannenbaum opted to go for quality over quantity. Most draftniks and experts had this draft billed as a weak one so instead of getting a bunch of mid-late round mediocre players, we wound up with the best CB and the 2nd best ILB in this draft class.

Darrelle Revis has pro-bowl potential at CB and is an all around player at his position. He's great in coverage and is always willing to come up and play the run. This kid is physical, fast, and smart. Mangini could turn Revis into a star and we now have some serious talent in the secondary when you couple in Kerry Rhodes and Andre Dyson.

David Harris is your prototypical 3-4 ILB. He's the classic "thumper" in the middle that thrives at shedding blockers and attacking the ballcarrier. I also can't think of any other player besides a big NT that could help out Vilma in this system more than Harris. He was a team captain at Michigan, is known as a field general, and LOVES to hit.

The Jets then addressed the O-line and receiving corps on day 2.

I loved the Bender pick in round 6 and think he could definitely be the solution to our problem at RT. He dominated the small school ranks and possesses all the physical tools and intangibles that you look for. Don't be surprised to see him push Anthony Clement in his rookie season.

Chansi Stuckey could develop into a solid #4 receiver and PR down the road. He had some injury issues at Clemson but when he was on the field, the production was there. He's faster on the field than he is on the track. I've seen him play many times and there's no way he runs a 4.6 forty.

All and all I don't see too many holes on this roster except for OG, SS, and maybe NT if Robertson can't clog the middle with some consistency.

I think this is an improved roster over 2006 and we should be contending for a playoff spot again.

I think we're a year or two away from competing for a championship but the future is definitely looking bright.

i agree with everything you said.

i think kenyan coleman is a huge addition. he can actually play re, something we lacked last year. ellis, robertson and coleman is AT LEAST solid. i also hope that haynes and wadsworth will make it. if either of them bring anything its a positive. bowens and hobson will probably platoon at olb and im fine with that opposite thomas. i hope that vilma turns it on this year. harris should give him some help. the secondary should be very good with the possibility of being great. could you imagine if the light goes on in justin millers head?

Oh yeah Vilma should have a way better year now after a seaon under his belt in the system and hopefully some help around him making him available to move a around, allowing him to work they way he wants. I also think the NT situation with ferg has been played up alot, I think he'll do just fine,

I agree we have a great core for years to come. This is the team that will lead us to the promise land. Our defense has been upgraded niceley this offseason and our Offense is better with Thomas Jones at RB. This season the playaction pass will work great for Chad.

That is one of Harris' weakness. He has short arms and has trouble disengaging from blockers.

If you are lucky and all your wishes are prooven true by Belichick leaving, you might be a year or two from competing for a division title, but a championship? With Chad as your QB? No F'ing way.

Indeed.

As long as Chad is starting behind center, we arn't sniffing a real shot at the Super Bowl.

Some Jets' fans are priceless.

The Jets are clearly behind these teams.

Indy

SD

Baltimore

New England

You might argue they are behind Pittsburgh and Denver.

Somehow someway I am to believe Chad is going to beat two or three of these teams with Chad? No way.

chad has a much better chance of beating them with himself than without himself.

Is TX using your account from time to time?

The similarities in the posts are getting scary.

That would be ironic.

The Jets are inferior to all these teams on both sides of the ball except for maybe the Colts D.

The Jets have improved immensely this off season,we got Bowens to rush the passer and take some heat off Ellis. and Thomas Jones and a running game will be the biggest addition as long as everybody stays healthy.

Look,I'm not a big Pennington fan,but I was shocked he did what he did without a running game last year..and he got worse as the season went along (shoulder fatigue?)

I'm silently optimistic about the upcoming season regardless of the tough schedule.

I'll give you the top 4, those teams are coming off of very strong 2006 seasons. I'll even throw in Denver, because I like what they did at the end of last year and also their off-season was solid if not spectacular.

Pittsburgh? No way, no how. I get the feeling Tomlin is a bit clueless and will not have his team ready this year. Dare I say, reminds me of a young Herm.:)

Not only is your post 110 percent correct, but you left out a few things.

Thomas Jones will lead the AFC in rushing, with a 4.7 YPC avg, and Andre Wadsworth will lead his comeback season all the way to the probowl in honalulu, not to mention he will be the come back player of the year! Did I mention Chad Pennington? You know his arm will be much stronger after a full offseason of rest and training!

Go Jets!

very funny, but you're about half right about everything except the wadsworth thing. Jones will improve our running game and chad if he plays will do better than last year.

I wouldn't say Pittsburgh with all that they have lost and are continuing to lose (see Faneca about to leave town and a possible switch to a 43 coming up soon), but I'd definitely say the Jets are behind those other 5 teams you listed above, PLUS, the Cincinnati Bengals. The Jets right now, in my opinion, are the 7th best team in the AFC. Pittsburgh, Kansas City and Jacksonville are not far behind.

Not to be an ahole, but I agreed with alot of untouchables points. Mainly that we are a few years away from really competing, and thats only if Clemens pans out. If he doesnt, we're in alittle trouble I'd say.

no one is being an ahole, I agree we're a few years from being true contenders, if clemens fails it'll suck but won't kill the franchise. We're better than last year and probably go 9-7 and miss the playoffs or back in in the last week like kc just did.

nah I know. I just said that because I thought maybe UT thought I was being a d#ck with my sarcastic "go Jets rah rah" post. :)

Good stuff UT-I think David Bowens eventually will put Shawn ellis on the bench...he helped make Jason Taylor DPOTY last season...I think he will be the biggest upgrade on the defense this year for us-also his familiarity with the way Dan Quinn wants things done,he could emerge as a leader

SFJ, I have high hopes for Bowens too, but isn't he a little light to take Ellis' spot? I thought that like UT says, he figures to play LB. I saw him as a pass rush specialist 4th down lineman/OLB. Ellis is bigger and he might be small for 3-4 DE. Wondering what you think since you've seen more of him down there than I have over here.

i agree, there is no way bowens is taking ellis spot, they will play different positions on this team. ellis is a 3-4 de, but in the 3-4 bowens WILL NOT PLAY END, he will play olb. think bryan thomas.

he played opposite JT at Miami-he's a pure DE and they won't screw with that...oh BTW to all the trolls and pessimistic (Jets fans) youngsters here-WE'RE WINNING THE SUPER BOWL THIS YEAR...know it,embrace it and love it
