Chiefs trade Gonzalez for 2010 draft pick

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to trade perennial Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez to the Atlanta Falcons for a second-round pick in the 2010 draft.

Gonzalez had asked the Chiefs for a trade in March if the right deal came along. The only tight end in NFL history selected to 10 Pro Bowls, Gonzalez was usually double-teamed during Kansas City's 2-14 season but still caught 96 passes for 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He plans on playing at least one more season and possibly two.

This trade gives the opp to be a viable SB candidate for about 1-2 years, but even without Gonzo I would expect them to be in the conversation for SB every year for a long time.

See what a franchise QB, nice running game, and decent D can get you?

Now which one of those were we missing again....

Works out for both teams. Chiefs aren't going to be competitive while Gonzalez is still playing, Falcons get a great weapon for Matt Ryan and don't even give up a pick this year.

Also works out alright for us. Makes it more likely we could grab Pettigrew in a trade down if we choose to do so, since the Falcons were probably the biggest threat to grab him in the 20's.

Good for Gonzalez. At least he's not going to the Cheater Pricks.

if they go to SB or contend it is a great deal

He is not the missing piece... Favre was a good example of why this doesnt work...

He is 33 years old and on his way out... that is not worth a 2nd round pick when guys like Keller can be had for right around that and they are 10 years younger.

The Cheifs were never a vertical team... they were designed to go through the RB and TE... thats why his #s are so high... his lack of speed and age will be exposed in Atlanta.

I will leave out the high 1st rounders as it might cost too much to move up... but look at this list of late 1st and later TEs taken recently...

'

Keller

Olsen

Boss

Heath Miller

Ben Watson

Cooley

Dallas Clark

Witten

Grham

Stevens

McMichael

Baker

Heap

Crumpler

All of these TE's were drafted wiht about the value of the pick the Cheifs got or less...

Maybe not all of them... but why the hell would you choose a 33 year old over any decent young rookie?

Why? Gonzo makes the Falcons potentially great and rookies rarely produce at that level.

At 32, he caught 96 passes for 10 TDs as the primary threat for a nobody QB and few other offensive threats.

He did not have Matt Ryan throwing to him. Michael Turner and his 1700 yards. Roddy Whited and his 1100+ yards on one side and Mike Jenkins and his 770 yards on the other. Who are you going to defend?

Only one rookie, Anquan Boldin, has had more then 96 catches. Only two, Terry Glenn included have had more then 90 catches. No TEs have that much. Rookie TEs rarely have more then 30-40 catches. Not exactly a viable threat. In the history of the NFL, I think only Shockey's 74 catches comes close to Gonzalez's production at 32.

That second round pick, likely after pick 50, is more likely to be a average at best then productive like Gonzalez.

It might be a real good trade for KC.

I'll bet Pioli is banking that the Falcons are picking high next draft due to a difficult schedule and a fall back to earth for Matty Ryan. Its an old BB move. You dont want to parlay players or picks so you can pick lower in a round.

Could be. They have the two east division on their schedule to include their division.

Matt Ryan

Michael Turner

Roddy White

Tony Gonzalez

Have fun stopping the Atlanta offense, NFC South.

If Atlanta had a second receiving threat last season, they would've been the ones with home field advantage.
