2011 Jets Free Agents

Sperm Edwards

I think Harris is overrated, personally. He's a good hitter and a smart player. Basically he's very good, which is how he's seen around the league, so I don't consider him underrated. Only way he's underrated is if he's super-elite, which he isn't. If he was in that stratosphere of ILB'ers he'd be able to cover a TE now and again, or go stride-for-stride with a RB out of the backfield or slot receiver for >2 yards. He's a keeper at his (2010 and prior) cheap dollars, but he ain't worth the kind of bucks he'll command as a FA. Not unless they cut ties with Bart Scott.

Can't resign him IMO. He's exactly what you just said.

I think he's absolutely useless when you get a body on him, something Scott often covers up. Heath Miller must have taken him out of at least 7-8 running plays today.

I have no problem bringing Harris back. He's a terrific player.

I DO have a problem bringing him back at $7-8M per year while keeping Scott for $8M per year and Pace at $7M per year, while we still need another LB with those 3 to generate some pressure without blitzing (and while we have 2 starting WR's who are FA's and the only half-decent starting safety is a shrimp who can't cover and who got knocked out before the playoffs).

Scott and Pace are both overpaid but I don't know who they can get to fix that free agency other than Woodley.

OK.

IMO if they're going to shell out that kind of coin, might as well go all-out and sign Aso for another $2-3M. For all his physical talent, Cromartie is well into double-digits away from having a triple-digit IQ. He's not even a shut-down corner on teams' #2 WRs.

Good corner, compared to most of them, but nowhere near worth the elite money that will be robbed from other positions.

LOL, I'd actually be up for ditching quite a few players to get Aso. Just to see the awesomeness of the situation if nothing else.

The Jets just can not invest all those cap dollars in cornerbacks and ILBs. That just isnt what wins in the NFL. They have a ton invested in Revis. He is their lockdown guy. You surround that with draft picks and lower level free agents and scheme it. Even if Cromartie is a great player, did it make a difference when the teams just decided to pick on Drew Coleman or Eric Smith or any of the LB's in coverage? Those dollars saved on a guy like Cro are the dollars you use to upgrade the whole roster.

As for Harris, its the same thing. ILBs are not difference makers and they are easily replaceable via the draft or free agency. Harris was awful today. Tackled way high and most plays was being driven down the field by a lineman. He might be the worst of the LBs in coverage. His sideline to sideline speed is nowhere near as fast as other highly priced players. The Jets overpaid for Scott and Pace and they can not compound the mistake by paying for Harris as well.

That's fine BUT Edwards and Holmes better both be on this team then and Wilson better be ready to play and they better finally get one right with a edge rusher via draft.

As long as there is a franchise tag Id expect both to be back. I think the Jets want to see more from Holmes and already know that Edwards is a big asset to the team. The only spots where the team drastically overspent were ILB (Scott) and OLB (Pace). Those deals are what precludes the team from a Harris deal.

Assssssoooooooo.

No really, don't sleep on Wilson. The kid could be ready to shine.

Hopefully it will coincide with him realizing you catch the ball with your hands and not your face. In all seriousness though, he did look better towards the end of the season, so i'm still holding out hope, so long as he has a good work ethic.

Which is what I was saying. He's fine to bring back. He's not fine to bring back at superstar money like they already gave to Pace and Scott. Because that gives us 3 LB'ers at a yearly average of $22M give or take AND we still need to blitz to generate a pass rush and drop 8 into coverage to not get burned over the middle.

You can't just say bring back player A, B, C, D, and E without considering how that causes the team to be dramatically thinner in so many places. There are more active players on the team than the starting 22 plus our K, P, and KR/PR.

The Jets should have plenty of space once dead weight and some shuffling & spreading out of cap numbers (like Sanchez's) are factored into the equation. But shelling out $7-8M for Harris and/or $8M+ for Cromartie is going to gobble up whatever cap room we have in a big hurry.

Biggest question-mark for me is actually Brad Smith. Don't know what kind of contract offers he'd get in FA. Want him back, but not at any price.

We also need to keep Pool, Smith, and Weatherford. Also, I LOVE T-Rich, but I think he should retire and help coach. I think The Terminator has what it takes to fill his spot immediately. He's already one of the most underrated FBs in the league to me....

You sell out to keep Edwards and Holmes. Do everything you have to do to keep those two players. Your $50M QB needs receivers.

Cole, Coleman, Hunter, Ihedigbo, Pool, and Eric Smith should all be relatively cheap to keep, and I'd look to keep them. Ditto Shaun Ellis.

You have to have specialists, so I'd one-year Weatherford and Folk and hope to find their replacements in camp.

Love to keep Hunter and Brad Smith, but I think the market price will be too high. Ditto Cromartie, who I don't think will be close to worth what he gets in FA. I think the Jets have enough in the secondary to let him go - and Rex will be looking to add players there again, he always is.

BTW also consider under-contract players who are potential cap casualties. Using Jason's #'s (which I haven't checked out but am prepared to accept):

Woody (turns 34 next season) = cutting/trading saves $3.24M

Jenkins (turns 32 next season) = cutting/trading saves $4.60M

Thomas (turns 32 next season) = cutting/trading saves $3.70M

Hartsock (turns 31 next season) = cutting/trading saves $1.65M

Tomlinson (turns 32 next season) = cutting/trading saves $2.42M

Taylor (turns 37 next season) = cutting/trading saves $2.3M

Brunell (turns 41 next season) = cutting/trading saves $1.30M

Scott (turns 31 next season) = cutting/trading saves $2.2M (don't think he's going anywhere, but just throwing his name out there because it is a net savings and it would make re-signing Harris easier; would still need another ILB unless both are brought back for a $15M+ pair of ILB'ers)

Gholston (who cares; scumbag is stealing our oxygen) = cutting/trading saves little more than a roster spot (<$100K)

(keep in mind these are gross savings, not net savings. They don't get replaced with $0 salaries. The most the team saves would be replacing them with minimum-salary rookies at around $350K, so if you replace these their roster spots with low-round/UDFA scrubs you still have to subtract a minimum of $350K from the cap savings)

Woody and Jenkins have to restructure or leave.

I can't believe Hartsock makes that much. He could be replaced with one of our reserve TE's, no?

Thomas, and to a lesser extent Scott, depends on what they plan to do with Harris.

Tomlinson? Taylor? Thanks, it's been fun.

The pending work stoppage is good for Brunell's short term prospects. The players won't be able to interact with coaches, but if the Jets players get together in the offseason, having Brunell to work with the offense (Sanchez) will be a major plus. That said, the Jets will have to be in the QB market to some degree just to replace Clemens and maybe displace Brunell.

100% agree on Harris. Good tackler but a huge liability in coverage. Personally would love to see if Westerman can fill the void. Probably will not be as good as Harris but for the price difference, might be worth the risk.

Also just read that Revis will be making 25 mil next year. That dude needs to restructure

That article is Cimini at his worst drumming up something that is not even a real story. Here is the deal with Revis.

He signed a 4 year contract that for cap purposes is actually a 7 year deal. The 25 million number that Cimini is referencing is his cash payout. He will earn 7 million in salary and he will get an 18 million dollar signing/option bonus. For cap purposes the 18 million will count 3 million towards the cap in each year. There is also some prorated money from his last deal in his cap number. His cap charge is about 11.3 million not 25 million.

Just what in the world is Revis going to do to restructure to give relief the way Cimini insinuates? The maximum years for prorating bonus money is 6 years and that will not change in a new CBA. His deal already is set to absorb the max proration. It is already spread out over a long term deal. There is no longer term deal that the team could do to make it all better. Does he honestly think that a guy who complained and complained and complained about his deal, sat out all of camp and got hurt because of it is now going to pick up the phone and say "yeah Mike I need to help the team. Ill take a paycut and defer more money"? Its idiotic to even think that.

The extension that is coming is Sanchez. He is set to earn nearly 15 million in cash and his cap charge is nearly 18 million. If there is a story to be found its just what do you give a young QB that has led a successful team but still has not proven that he is a superstar QB. Thats the story. Not whether or not the Jets try to get Revis back to the contract table.

As Tom has noted, someone is going to look at the highlights vs. the Bengals and be very tempted to write B.Smith a really big check. Despite the runbacks, he did very little in the postseason other than interrupt Snache'z rythm with the option plays. He's not much of a WR, and we may have a PR in Wilson or a healthy Leonard or a KR if Cromartie is resigned. And we saw none of that yesterday. Smith is probably better suited for a team with a younbg QB or a bad QB situation. But as Sanchez matures before our eyes, Smith seems less valuable. I would wager Daniel Snyder is itching to write that check,

Totally agree. He's a luxury for the Jets, but could be vital on a lesser roster and somebody's going to shell out for that.

Actually I agree with pretty much everything you've said here with the exception of Woody. Unless he restructures for backup money (unlikely) I think he's gone. With Slauson probably entrenched at LG the Jets are going to want Ducasse to win that RT position. I think they bring back Hunter and let Ducasse try to beat him out rather than Ducasse competing with Slauson again.

I would love to bring Jenkins back but he'll have to cut his salary by at least $2M. He can't have a $6.4M cap number in 2011 when he hasn't had a season with >10 healthy games since 2007 (he toughed through the last 6-7 games in '08 but he wasn't nearly the same player he was in the first half of the season). The problem is he's too talented - WAY too talented - to not bring back if he wants to come back, and too much of an injury liability to commit the roster spot and cap space to. Keep in mind Pouha, with his late start, is the same age (actually 6 months older than Jenkins) and is a free agent in 2012. We need to bring in some young blood for NT and there is zero chance of anyone we acquire beating out Jenkins or Pouha (unless, by some miracle, we happen to land Ngata).

I'm not in love with Holmes but he's a special player and you can draft WR's for 10 years without landing someone - in his prime - as capable at the pro level.

Harris I'd let go and take the 3rd round comp pick in 2012 (if they still have that as part of a new CBA). Like Cromartie, a good player who - to the Jets - isn't worth what he'll command in FA.

The rest may be expendable, as you put it, but they still need to be replaced with players. You can't just pick 8-10 guys to pay the sun & the moon to and have the rest of the team be a bunch of scrubs.

Harris isn't worth a superstar's contract. It should be Harris and one of the WR's or both WR's and no Harris. I'm for the latter unless they find some way to drop Bart Scott's salary significantly (or move him outright). Scott and Harris are too much of a liability in the passing game to have lined up next to each other. Also if there IS some primo free agent we have a shot at I'd hate to think we took ourselves out of the running because we paid Harris like he's a future HOF'er the way we did with Pace and Scott.

I don't think they should bring Harris back either. You can't have 2 ILB's making elite-LB money, where neither of them can cover worth a damn. Harris is a solid, solid ILB. But as a UFA he'll command too much given the $ we're shelling out already for Pace and Scott (not to mention we need a starting OLB opposite Pace who can actually get to the QB in less than 11 seconds).

I think they need to bring back Wayne Hunter. I don't know the cap raminfications but if cutting Woody helps then sign some of the others then I'll take my chances with Hunter, assuming he comes much cheaper.

Re Harris. I agree. He's solid but a product of the defense - teams avoid Scott. Also, Scott disrupts so many plays for which he doesn't get a statistic (T or A) - he makes the play but someone else gets the tackle. Harris is good, no question, but he will command more than he's worth to the Jets.

Don't mess with Scott. That guy is worth the money. A warrior of the highest order. His worth to the team goes far beyond his considerable contributions on the field.

I'm not saying you dont sign a handful of them, I'm just stating what the priority should be...then you figure out the rest.

IMO, if you cant sign all 3, and you can only sign 2. You sign the WR's. You need continuity at that position, work on rapport and keep from having a revolving door a WR. Definitely prefer that than taking chances in the draft.

Harris, if he's looking for superstar money, let him walk. I think this day in age, you can replace Harris's production easier than finding a Holmes or Edwards via FA or the draft. I'd like to see him stay put since he's the team voted MVP of the defense, but if he's looking for top flight money that hinders from us keeping both WR's on then the priority should be to support the franchise QB.

OUCH....It's tough looking at that list seeing as how close this team is to winning.

Let's just hope these guys weren't lying when they say they love playing for REX.

Don't worry, they will all take less money to play for Rex. Revis is giving all his money to charity.

I think the Fins will pursue David Harris. With him parked next to Dansby and a few more FA's and a good draft on Defense our D will be among the best in the league for years to come.

Wake is 28, Dansby is 29.....? Yes, you have some young talent like Langford, Merling, and Davis, but your 2 best players have 4 years left at best....

4 years is alot of time. I think our Defense is a few pieces away from being Elite, which will happen either this year or the next. Thats why its time to invest heavily in the Defense this offseason and try to get it to Elite status. The offense is too far away to fix it in a couple of offeseason's.

I'd love to see them bring back Ellis because he's been such a warrior here, but that's probably a pipe dream. The WR's will be tricky because you'd have to imagine that some teams will come strong after one or both of them--and teams that could likely promise them bigger stats. I mentioned before, what if the Colts come around and offer Santonio a contract? How does he say no to that? On the plus side, Sanchez may be better off in the long run replacing Holmes (or Braylon) with a legitimate possession receiver instead of a home run hitter. Even Keller is just a downfield threat. Give Sanchez an underneath guy and his completion percentage probably jumps 5-10 points.

Another guy who played well down the stretch is Brodney Pool. He sucked early on, but his tackling and coverage were pretty good the last month. Unless Ed Reed suddenly shakes free, I'd keep Pool as a cheap fill-in and I'd replace Eric Smith with a legit thumper. If/when Jim Leonhard returns from his injury, let him take over Eric Smith's position as the swing/nickel safety.

Brad Smith is going to get a fat contract from some nitwit who thinks he can play offense, the same way that Antwaan Randle-El and Chad Morton did, and it will be a bad, bad contract. It will actually be addition by subtraction, imo. It will let McKnight handle kick returns and Westhoff will make him look like a star at that, and it will also eliminate the stupid f'ing Seminole that seems to completely stall the offensive rhythm even when it is picking up yards. Sanchez played 1000x better when he knew that he wasn't going to be ripped off the field 10 times per game.

Bam!! Their it is.
