Forbes Magazine just named Sanchez the most over-paid player in the NFL.

While New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is not in the same class as Tom Brady of the New England Patriots, Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts or even Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints, Sanchez is certainly getting paid like them—actually getting paid more than them as the third-year signal caller from Southern California is slated to make a salary of $14.75 million dollars in 2011.

Because of that, Forbes Magazine just recently named Sanchez the most over-paid player in the NFL.

Brady, Manning and Brees have a combined five Super Bowl rings compared to Sanchez’s zero, and have appeared in more combined conference championship games—with ten, five by Brady, three by Manning and two by Brees—to Sanchez’s two.

Since being acquired in the 2009 NFL Draft—via trade with the Cleveland Browns— Sanchez’s record as a NFL starter in the regular season is a impressive 29-12 and 4-2 in post-season. Sanchez’s has four playoff wins—all on the road—his 0-2 record in the AFC Championship Game is one reason why his $14.75 million dollar salary may be less than justified.

The main reason why Sanchez is over-paid is his career accuracy of 55.1% of and sub-par QB rating of 71.4 in a “passing league” is less than acceptable.

For all of his talent and potential, Sanchez’s penchant to date Hollywood actresses and pose in men’s fashion magazines such as GQ, makes you question if New York’s $14.75 million dollar investment in Sanchez is sound.

What is this---I don't even....? "Combined"? So let's "combine" three long-time veterans with a guy entering his third year? Wait a second, unless he's making more than all 3 of them combined where the hell does 'combined' even factor into this???????????????

For the record, Brady, Manning and Brees have a combined THIRTY SIX years to Sanchez' THREE. Not thirty two, not twenty two, not twelve: THREE. That stat isn't relevant when adding up their accomplishments? LOL.

Fine, how about this - who has the highest percentage of years with playoff appearances? Sanchez. Who has the highest average of playoff wins per year? Sanchez. Who has the highest percentage of years making it to the conference championship? Sanchez.

Well now we're getting closer to the truth at least, but still... two years of experience isn't much to form a comparison.

I don't really understand this article at all. Maybe if Sanchez was sitting out in free agency and we signed this contract, maybe then you could compare.

Also, doesn't Stafford have a bigger contract than Sanchez? Isn't that relevant at all? Has the guy had a single healthy season...?

Dumb article.

Anyway, Sanchez met contract incentives that boosted his 2011 salary by nearly $10M. Matt Stafford only played in 13 games his first two years, probably missing out on virtually every incentive in his rookie contract.

We had a whole thread on this the other day. It takes very little to meet most of the qualifiers to get the salary bumps (35% PT as a rookie or 45% therafter) so almost every rookie gets it except Gholston and maybe Kyle Wilson, though he has played more this year. The Jets and Lions took very different approaches to the contracts they gave their QBs. The Jets took more of a pay as you go approach giving the Jets much more flexibility in the event Sanchez bombed out and some flexibility to renegotiate in the event he did really well. He is somewhere in between so they just decided to eat the large cap hit this year and they have so much cap room in 2011 that its probably the right choice. Had Sanchez bombed the Jets would have been in a position to dump him next year with only a 5M dead hit. That fact that he didnt "hit" yet makes the salary seem way high, but all things considered with the old rookie system it was actually a safe way to go.

Stafford got more of a pre-paid approach, which is the more traditional route. He made around 27 million in 2010, similar to what Sam Bradford makes this year. His injuries have only cost him around 3 million, but did not cost him from unlocking most of the money in the deal. Under his rookie deal Stafford would have cost the Lions around 13M in cap space and 3M in salary to cut in 2012 and then 7M to cut in 2013, giving them essentially no escape. Because of the Lions poor cap position they already had to renegotiate with Stafford. Now it would cost them nearly 20 million to cut him next year, 11 million in 2013 and 5.5 million in 2014, all signed at a time when Stafford couldnt stay healthy for more than a few games at a time.

Haha! Wow!

So Sanchez being the most overpaid this year pales in comparison to Stafford making $9M a game last year. Or $4.5M a TD. Or over 50K a yard. :D

The real question is when will the NYJ F/O and C/S feel he is overpaid.

This team probably would have won a title with a better than average QB last year or the previous season.

One problem now is there is nobody on the roster to even push him even just a little.

Sanchez is clearly the runt of the current young QB litter, Freeman, Bradford, Stafford, Newton et al

Gabbert didnt look bad either last week and will start this week.

Shoot even the previously lowly regarded Ryan Fitzpatrick is a much better player in his 2nd season as a starter.

after reading this I just remembered that I actually had a dream this morning that Chad Pennington was still our QB-and all that he was, and always would be still came along with that...

this is the dumbest crap I have ever seen-hey Forbes, stick to writing stuff you rich guys know about and leave the football to those of us who used to NOT pick you to play with us at the schoolyard OK? Stick with stuff you KNOW about-like booing gay soldiers and applauding Texas executions.

The QB position has not been the problem in the playoffs.

The only reason Sanchez is the runt in that litter to you is because you watch every Sanchez snap, warts and all, and only see the highlights on the other guys. I can't believe how much the media is on Sam Bradford's dick, in particular. Is it because he's Chinese? Because he's done nothing special so far in his career.

This is Ryan Fitzpatrick's fourth year starting. He's four years older than Sanchez and spent all of those four extra years in the NFL.

Slats, Agree with you about the medias love of Bradford. He is good but not my fav of the group. However I do watch alot more football than you give me credit for so my assessment of Sanchez goes beyond what you describe.

Regarding Fitz you make good points, I should have stated more clearly that I was not including him in the "young QB class"and that this is his 2nd year as the named #1 starter for the Bills or any team for that matter. Prior to that he was a sub for Edwards in Buff and came in when he had concussions. He was also a sub in Cincy and St Louis and played well when his number was called.

At any rate the guy is a very good QB and will sign a well deserved high dollar long term contract soon.

Bottom line for me here is that given where he was drafted Sanchez disapoints me.

Sanchez is better than Fitzpatrick. Bradford hasn't actually done anything, let alone Newton or Gabbert. I think Stafford is clearly better, but what do you really expect when one quarterback goes 1 and the other goes 5? It is definitely a problem that Freeman, the actual alternative, compares favorably.

Yep, all those tackles Sanchez missed in the first half against Pittsburgh killed us.

You see? Instead of the 'like' button it would be so easy to change it to a POTWN....there have been some damn funny and good posts the last two or three days here. I have 'liked' 4 or 5 so far

Sanchez better than Fitz? Given your well documented disdain for Sanchez one could deduct Fitz doesnt even belong in the league.

I agree. If Sanchez doesn't produce a long-form birth certificate right away, we should execute him. Due process is for hippies and socialists.

LOL-hey wait a minute didn't the guy whose name is on the front of that magazine run for president a couple of times? Now, which party was that for again?
