The San Francisco 49ers inquired about Steelers free-agent wide receiver Mike Wallace but the price was too high according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.

A league source said that Wallace, 25, wants a contract that surpasses the eight-year, $120 million deal that Larry Fitzgerald signed last year with the Cardinals. Combine that with the first-round pick any team that signs Wallace to an offer sheet would lose if the Steelers didn't match the offer, and you start to understand why we've heard so little about Wallace in the last week and a half.

he tweeted earlier this morning something like: "dont believe everything you hear" so it could be a fabricated story to drive his price up.

but yeah clearly he's on one if he thinks he can get Fitz/Calvin money. they love the kid ABrown in Pitt and they are not going to shell out 100 million for Wallace, ZERO chance

Wallace is a very good WR, but he's out of his mind if he thinks he's earned a contract like that. Consider that guys like CJ and Fitz accomplished far more, and over a longer period of time, than Wallace before getting their contracts. Wallace has a couple of more years of playing at the level he has, or perhaps better, before any one is going to trust him enough with that kind of deal.

Lost in all this discussion...how dumb are the Steelers signing a 3rd round draft pick to only a 3-year rookie contract in the first place? What possible good could ever come from that?

That is peculiar. That's a trend that died off many, many years ago. Just about every team in the league realized you're better off just locking them up for the extra year as opposed to going through the whole RFA mess. Any team who didn't already know that got the message loud and clear after the Jets 2003 offseason.

True makes you wonder if this would have been a holdout year for Wallace
