Patriots | Leon Washington signs

The New England Patriots signed free-agent RB Leon Washington (Seahawks) to an undisclosed deal.

FANTASY TIP: Washington gives the Pats more running back depth behind Stevan Ridley, and he'll compete for touches with Shane Vereen and to a lesser extent, Brandon Bolden. Washington would be a waiver wire addition if Ridley is injured at any point next season.

Leon Washington says he’s a Patriot

It looks like Leon Washington is back in the AFC East.

A couple of hours after tweeting “negotiations!!!” while meeting with the Patriots, the former Jets and Seahawks running back and return man sent out a picture of himself wearing a hat with the team’s logo. There’s no official word from the team, but the picture looks like it was taken at the league’s facility and there’s little reason to think Washington would lie about landing a deal.

Washington could step right into the punt return role vacated by Wes Welker, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him play a variety of roles for the Patriots in 2013. Bill Belichick has never been shy about using players in multiple ways and Washington has been a running, receiving and returning threat during his NFL career.

Former Jets RB Leon Washington signs with rival Patriots

The Jets have been saying goodbye to plenty of familiar faces this offseason, but now they'll be reunited with one, sort of.

Former Jets running back and fan favorite Leon Washington has signed a deal with the division-rival Patriots, according to his Twitter page.

Washington also posted a photo of himself wearing a navy Patriots hat.

In four seasons with the Jets (2006-2009) Washington racked up 1,782 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on top of 969 receiving yards. In the kick return game, he registered nearly 3,000 return yards over four seasons and scored four touchdowns.

In 2010, Washington was traded to Seattle for a fifth-round draft choice. He stands as the NFL's career leader in kickoff returns for a touchdown (8).

The Jets, who just saw Shonn Greene sign a three-year deal with the Titans, are still in search of a running back to round out their roster. They hosted former Raiders RB Mike Goodson today.

Leon is just keeping a roster spot warm for when we cut/release Joe McKnight in a couple years.

No.  He is a place holder for Jeff Demps in the event Demps wants to resume his Olympic pursuits over his NFL pursuit.
