Olbermann made more doing sports center then the political shows than mike could dream of making.

Francesa gets $5 mil per from WFAN. Olbermann is making $2 mil, struggling to find ratings in the hinterland that is ESPN2. Olbermann's problem has always been that his ratings don't justify his salary.

according to wiki, he took a huge paycut to go from an LA based CBS station to go to espn, and at then end "only" made 300k.  he was making 450k at cbs

at those earnings (if true) i'm sure he was worth it

When Olbermann started out? Sure. But his more recent history has been less impressive. His MSNBC show got routinely trounced by Bill O'Reilly before he went to something called "CurrentTV." He's been bailed out by ESPN2. He's a talented guy and puts on a good show, but he's never going to attract a big audience. Francesa, angry and condescending though he may be, guarantees WFAN will own afternoon drive for as long as he's there.

Olbermann's net worth now is $25 million, and that's after blowing up at management repeatedly and bouncing around.

Francessa is making $5M now, Olbermann was making $4M in 2007 and was the head of MSNBC's nightly lineup.  Fox is king on cable nighttime political shows, but Olbermann's success was enough to convince MSNBC to redo their whole nightly lineup similar to Olbermann's show.  True to form, Olbermann left MSNBC in a big blowup, although the format he pioneered there is still in place, (which means they are making money at it).

Olbermann has done a lot more things on bigger networks than Francessa ever thought of doing.

Francesa made $25 million since 2009 alone. Olbermann is on ESPN2 doing long-form essays about decency in sports and trolling local radio host trying to get people to find out what channel ESPN2 is. You credit Olbermann with creating a stylistic format for political talk shows. Francesa made the sports-talk industry profitable over twenty years ago and created a million carbon copies. I think Francesa is in good shape on this one.

Yes, he was paid that, but how much does he have after living on it?  If he invested wisely, good for him-but we are talking about the money accumulated from years in broadcasting.

He's just coming off being in charge of network that didn't make it, after leaving MSNBC in a huff.  He's starting over after yet another blowup.  So for now, safe, pedestrian Mike Francessa is making more.  But Olbermann has done a lot more on the major networks than Francessa is doing now.  Every career has its ups and downs, but Olbermann's ups are a lot higher than Francessa's ups.

Huh?  Sports talk has been on radio in New York well before Francessa.  I remember listening to Howard Cosell talk about whether the appointment of a black player to middle linebacker, (the QB of the defense), might mean that the NFL might be ready for a black starting QB.  And there were others on the radio at the same time.  Francessa didn't invent anything.

Unless Francesa has a secret heroin addiction and has been maintaining an MC Hammer-like entourage, I'm gonna guess that he's been able to squirrel away a few sheckels over the past twenty years.

Olbermann's lone "up" was a stretch during the 2008 election season where people were tuning in to watch him mock Palin. Outside of that, he's been a GOP gadfly and a SportsCenter host. Francesa, though everyone "hates" him, has owned afternoon drive radio in the largest market in the country for decades. Meanwhile, Olbermann is getting paid $2 mil to pontificate to a few thousand eyeballs who left their TV on ESPN2 after collegiate gymnastics ended.

I didn't say Francesa created sports talk, I said he turned it into a profitable industry.

I'm sure he has shovelled some away, but the money is taxed and he's been living on it.  Which means that he has considerably less of that $25M now than when he got it, even if he's moved into a furnished room on Queens Blvd to be on the busline.

He's done various TV network shows.  Boston Market even used him as a spokesperson to mock "heroin chic" trends in their ads-a sign that he had a style they wanted to promote.  He went his own way on his MSNBC show and even though the marriage was rocky and ended predictably, the show went completely over to his format while he was there.  Olbermann pioneered that format on MSNBC and they continue to make money on it after he's left.

Fine.  Safe, pedestrian Francessa does his sports thing in NY and he's built himself into a nice niche.  Olbermann has been all over the place, done all sorts of things on broadcasting in several different venues, and is just coming back from a network that didn't work out.

So for this tiny slice of time,  Francessa is ahead of Olbermann in annual income, for now.  Olbermann is surely way ahead in money made from broadcasting though, as well as net worth.

That was in 1997.  Today, he is entirely too polarizing for any company.  Plus, he's a giant douche.

The fact that at one time a large company wanted him to present their image puts him ahead of Francessa-can you imagine anyone hiring Mike to do that?

Those commercials Olbermann made were extemely cool as well as funny-I don't know if he had any part in the scripting.  They satirized the then fashionable "heroin chic" image which was common in popular magazines.  It went out quickly when one of the key photographers of that style was found dead of an overdose.
