raffyD
Sources: Chiefs-Jets talks over Edwards stalledBy Chris Mortensen ESPN.com Talks between the Chiefs and Jets over Herm Edwards leaving New York to become the Kansas City coach have stalled, according to league sources. The compensation package that has been on the table involved the Chiefs sending fourth- and fifth-round draft picks to the Jets, perhaps splitting the choices over two years, but Chiefs president Carl Peterson has been reluctant to close a deal, the sources added. Peterson's reluctance, the sources believe, is based on his sense that Edwards is no longer welcomed in New York by Jets owner Woody Johnson, who is reportedly tired over Edwards' status. However, a league source added that Peterson's gamble could cost him because if Edwards is fired, the Chiefs would have competition among other teams who would be interested in the Jets coach. As one other source said, the deal is "always a phone call away." ESPN's Chris Mortensen is a regular contributor to Insider. He chats every Wednesday in The Show. Competition among other teams??? Why would we fire him at this point and allow him to walk into a windfall? I say keep his a$$ here for one more year to F everyone involved in this, see what he can accomplish next year and then move on if necessary. I don't want to be coachless. Before I do that, I'd still interview others or just award the job to 'dinger after all the other vacancies are filled. But I'm a vindictive sort of guy & it probably wouldn't serve the franchise best (may infuriate current players & FA's to "screw over nice Herm" & scare away future coaches). Stonehands
Anyone who read this and said, "Oh, no" better not complain about the compensation when it comes down. I would have such respect for Jet Ownership if they took Maxman's recommendation.

Could the Jets have handled this more poorly? By letting the public know that Herm has burnt his bridges with Woody, and won't be the coach here regardless of what happens why would the Chiefs give them compensation? If the Jets were smart, and actually used the leverage they had they might have gotten a 2nd round pick.. Our management is so friggin inept fellas.. raffyD
Great idea. Let's spite him and KC and make him stay! Definitely, why should he be allowed to walk away from this disaster. He made his own grave, and don't go blaming the front office for this. I'm sure they held their ground on the compensation and KC got cold feet, now if they release Herm from his obligations then I will say this front office is an utter joke because he gets what he wanted all along. Barton
This is just leverage talks. Get the raiders on the phone, they have higher draft picks anyways.
raffyD
I just want this to be over, the longer this is in limbo the crappier the head coach we get or the more embittered our current coach becomes. Just make a deal and let us dream a little, it is the offseason after all. BTW, it really sucks that other fans' teams are being talked about because of the playoffs and the only billing we get is due to the drama of our head coach wanting out of his own mess! We suck! If they were told, "no truth to the rumors, we are talking contract extension with Herm" and it was broadcast yesterday, this whole thing would be different. Green DNA
This is the game, it's all part of the negotiations. Pretend you are walking away from the table to see if the the other party folds. Hopefully our crack front office holds firm and waits for the Chiefs to slink back to the table. Herm is under contract, so unytil he gets told otherwise, he will coach, STFU and be thankful he doesn't get a pay cut. The Chiefs have a major chubby for Edwards and this is obvious no matter how baggy their pants are. They will be back because the chubby has passed the point of no return and needs to be satisfied. BaumerJet
I AGREE....but slitting the 2 picks is BS.. I agree - However, Herm has clearly stated that he no longer wants to be here. Plus our owner does not want to pay his coaches what they are worth. If he did, Tuna would have stayed & Haslet would have never been mentioned as Herm's replacement! I've said it before & I'll say it again - CHEAP ASS OWNER!!

SoFlaJets
the league must get involved-if KC is playing it coy after having pretty much forcing the whole thing with Vermeil's coach of the year joke and the dinners with Peterson and his wife then they may be in the area of tampering. If not, then do like GGG said;let him coach next year here and be the unhappiest person in the world and watching the KC and the double the money go to someone else. Go ahead Herm pad your resume with THIS!!!You made the bed Mr.I'm gonna coach here for the next 10 years and win a Super Bowl Idiots all especially Bradway
BwanaZulia
Not worth it. You and I both know his record, we just disagree on how good or bad it is. I see it as better than 80% of the coaches out there, you see it is as not enough. BZ

Ahem... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10643973/ Edwards, who has two years left on his contract, wants an extension with the Jets so he could have more time to rebuild the team. At $2 million a year, Edwards is one of the lowest-paid coaches in the league, and wanted a raise as a reward for taking the team to the playoffs three times in five years. Taking that & the fact that Herm's own Agent got involved with the trade deal yesterday - I have to believe that he didn't want to stay & that he was using this "I want to stay with the JETS" as a barganing tool in order to make him look better to KC... BwanaZulia
That is a huge leap from "Stated he no longer wants to be here" to sources saying he wants a contract extension because he is one of the lowest paid HCs in the NFL. You must be great at connect the dots. BZ
