Cleveland Browns fire Mike Pettine, GM Ray Farmer

The Cleveland Browns are rebooting the machine once again.

Coach Mike Pettine and general manager Ray Farmer have been fired following the team's loss to theSteelersthe team announced in a statement. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport first reported the Farmer news.

Pettine posted a 10-22 overall record after taking over as Cleveland's head coach prior to the 2014 season. Before joining the Browns, Pettine served as the defensive coordinator with the Buffalo Bills(2013) and New York Jets (2009-2012).

It's telling that Pettine was peppered with questions about Manziel's whereabouts in what looks like his final press conference. Pettine, who looked like a man who knew his dream of coaching the Brownswas ending, was short when asked about whether Manziel was in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

"I don't know. I wasn't," Pettine deadpanned to laughter in the room. Pettine went on to say it "would be disappointing" if the Manziel story was true.

Pettine was handed Manziel as his first-round quarterback in 2014 and did his best to coach around the situation. The Browns started 7-4 last season before losing five straight to finish the season. The Browns have now fired their head coach five times since the last time any team in the AFC North made a coaching change.

Farmer's brief tenure was similar to the other five Browns general managers that have held the job in Cleveland over the last eight years. He had regrettable first round picks, failed to find a quarterback, and didn't get long to fix his mistakes.

This news comes less than six months after Haslam insisted to reporters that he would stick with Farmer and Pettine long term.

"We're not going to blow things up. OK?" Haslam said during training camp. "I think we're on the right track, so we're not going to blow things up."

A 3-13 record season has a way of changing things. Pettine's defense collapsed and the offense struggled to run the ball until late in the year. Farmer will be most remembered for his sour relationship with Pettine and for texting the Browns coaches last year during games, which resulted in a four-game suspension for violating league rules prohibiting electronic communication about competitive or strategic information during games. Farmer had four first round picks in two years, and three of them (Johnny Manziel, cornerback Justin Gilbert, offensive lineman Cameron Erving) struggled to live up to expectations.

No respectable GM candidate is taking that job unless the owner understands from day one Johnny Manziel is gone. I have no idea if Pettine can be a HC cause that franchise is a disaster but he should have resigned weeks ago with the way he got neutered on disciplining that turd. He knew he was going to get fired. I think telling the Browns to kick rocks after they went over his head on Manziel would have looked much better league wide. The other 31 teams know it's a sh*t show.

Pettine is a snake so I don't feel bad for him losing the job.

The revolving door at GM and HC is itself part of the reason why there is no traction with that team. Nobody with the skills to turn that team around is so desperate for a job that they want to risk the smear on their resume of being fired after a couple bad years. The owners don't know how to find a suitable candidate and commit to them. Nobody wants that lack of commitment unless they think--foolishly--that they can be the ones to right that ship or believe it's the easy promotion to HC or GM and then a lateral position might follow. Otherwise, nobody of quality is going there. The revolving door is a sign that the owners are clueless.

The situation in CLE is exactly why people insisting this team should draft a QB in the first round of every draft until we hit a franchise QB are just as clueless. Drafted QBs will know they have one shot with the team and if they aren't magic on day one there will be a another guy coming in next year. Who wants that risk? You'll see those players go back to college just to avoid our team. The lack of loyalty and sense that our front office has no trust in their own decisions will drive away free agents and draft picks at other positions.

You just can't run a business that way.

Rex was the real DC here Pettine was a glorified assistant and looked way out of his league as a head coach especially this past season.  Just start Manziel your not winning anyway

DC and head coach are different positions. When Pettine was the DC in Buffalo after leaving New York he didnt do bad at all.

Also, if Rex was actually the DC while Pettine was in NY then it surely didnt show this year as the DC of a very talented Buffalo defense.

You mean the defense that we couldn't buy a third down conversion against in the first half and picked off Fitz 3 times in the 4th quarter?
