Devin Smith

really hope he is healthy. sitting here watching some highlights...the kid is an absolute monster. i know the game is faster, but the skills are transferable once the game slows down. Happened to Pryor year 1, he broke our year 2...hope for more of the same here.

you plug him and a healthy performing Amaro into a lineup with Marshall, Forte, Decker and Fitz...could be the best offense in my lifetime as a jets fan.

Hope he heals up flawlessly and unfuc*ks himself. I hope he gains some confidence back,  a lot of dropped balls. I am still optimistic about Smith.

I dont remember him dropping alot of balls. i remember a bunch that were under thrown to him.

Ha, it's true. He did have a good number of drops and was out of position a number of times. I like Smith, and  was very excited to see him play his first year. It was a little underwhelming but hey he was a rookie then got hurt. I am no way giving up on the kid I have seen the talent he has, not everybody comes into the NFL their first year and lights it up.

I am by no means writing the kid off, I am pulling for him as I had high hopes for him, and still do.

I forgot about that one play where he pissed Marshall off because he was in the wrong spot.

The coaching staff never seemed to lose confidence in him. We kept hearing last season that he was almost there. He showed something in practice but for the most part it did not translate onto the field (yet). If he can be the deep threat they wanted then it's a big deal for the offense. At Ohio State some of his accomplishments on the field were almost legendary.

His niche was he could track the ball in the air extremely well. Hope he come around.

Rookies for the most part at WR have a tough transition to the NFL. Belichick gave up after drafting a bunch of them & with Brady just decided to go with veteran WRs. The young guys make a lot of mistakes. We have the opposite problem, we have average or below average QBs so we need some star skill players.

When he came here last year the coaching staff talked about trying to make him an all around receiver instead of a deep specialist. Maybe they should just leave him alone and let him to what he was successful with in college. We have two great all around receivers. I imagine they've done that. Just look at his OSU tape and let him give us that dimension.

Smith dropped balls, and ran wrong routes in his time on the field.  Gailey even said before he ws hurt last year that he wasn't mentally where they hoped he would be.

J Marshall doesn't seem to be getting under thrown.  Marshall is also having a great camp.  Hope Smith can come out strong very soon.  Marshall plays the same spot, and is also a KO and Punt returner

Look you still have to go with what your Qb can do best. But Fitz can throw a very decent 40 yard pass, hit a receiver in stride and be accurate. And that's all you need esp with a receiver like Devin Smith. If he can separate and catch the ball it can lead to big plays esp when they are double covering Marshall.

To be fair, Devin did not have a lot of experience fighting for the ball or running routes since he was generally waiting for the deep pass at Ohio State and let's not forget he had a tough introduction to the NFL thanks to Jarrett - no reason to hit like that on day 1 of camp, not surprised he was tentative last year but Devin does have to get over it and get back out there and fight for a spot to avoid the bust label

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Devin Smith had a painful start to his first NFL training camp.

The New York Jets rookie wide receiver has what the team called a "partially punctured lung," as well as broken ribs, and is expected to be sidelined 4-6 weeks.

Smith was injured at practice Friday while making an impressive catch, and the team announced he would miss the majority of the remainder of training camp. The Jets confirmed Saturday that Smith also has the lung injury, but said it wouldn't affect the initial timetable for wide receiver's return.

Smith was hospitalized for a second straight night Saturday as a precaution.

"Hopefully he comes back sooner that that," coach Todd Bowles said of Smith being sidelined 4-6 weeks. "But, it gives other guys the opportunity to play, you know? These types of things happen, and we want to get him back as fast as we can, but we want him to be healthy, but the other guys, it gives us a chance to take a good look at them."

Smith, a second-round draft pick out of Ohio State, caught a long pass from Geno Smith that deflected off the hands of cornerback Marcus Williams. While Devin Smith was coming down, he was hit from behind by safety Jaiquawn Jarrett.

Smith held on to the ball, drawing big cheers from the fans, but stayed down for a few moments. He got up and was examined by trainers, who soon brought him to the locker room.

"That was extremely tough — freak accident," Geno Smith said. "He had just made a great play and everyone was praising him. Devin is a guy who could make plays like that and to see him get hurt, obviously, he's a guy we expect to play and do well. It hurts us all, but we have other guys who have to step up."...

A lot of people made the Deshaun Jackson comparison. If he can learn to run his routes better I have no doubt he at least can contribute in that kind of manner. A deep threat #2 option. I'm just hoping his production will eventually match his 2nd round selection one day. You hate to whiff on picks.

he was super tentative last year competing for the ball.  You can't teach that.  You have it or you don't

That was the complain against a young Keshawn and he developed that skill, became a monster going after balls.

Have to learn how to use your hands, body and routes to get separation and create room.  It's a learned trait, especially 5o someone who always was able to out run people to a spot.

Sure can happen

That was a killer too! I like Smith, but he did have a rough rookie year. I would not rush him back from knee surgery even if he has to start the season on the PUP.

Guy needs to hit the Leg Press and Leg Curl machine. He has the ankles of a flamingo. He needs to build that CORE strength so he won't be pushed off his routes so easily and lose his stride.

I like the aspect he can bring to the game, just not sure we have the proper incumbent QB to best utilize Smith's most dangerous asset on the field.

It's a very interesting, important, camp battle. If Marshall keeps it up and wins the spot, they both make the team, right? You can't just cut smith. Can they?

No WAY Mac gets EGG on his face by cutting a 2nd round draft pick in his 2nd year after the guy hurt his knee in his rookie year. Worst case scenario they PUP him or IR him and he rehabs ANOTHER year.

I called it WAY BACK WHEN. The New Lil' Marshall in Town will have the 3rd best receiving stats for the Jets this year. He is the 2nd coming of a Chrebet-like quickness in the slot to get the CRUCIAL 1st down reception by finding the gap in coverage.

Good chance he is replaced by this guy. Jalin Marshall

I really hope they play enunwa and thompkins primarily. I would really like if they let hack spend more time with jalin Marshall and Devin Smith would be good for our future for them to build up some chemistry...obviously not saying that they shouldn't see the field but let them learn behind Decker and b marsh and let them get comfortable with hackenberg if he is to one day be our starter
