Zach Wilson film breakdown vs the #6 Defense in CFB (SDSU)

Recommended Posts

I love the accuracy and quick release, too. Love it.

Just hope he realizes if he forces so many throws into tight windows - even if the throw is on the money - is going to get batted away or picked off a bit more than he got used to last season.

Even the #6 college defense is manned 90% by guys who would (or will) be scrubs in the NFL, if any even make a roster, never mind start as ~21 year olds.

I'm excited to have a new QB take over for one that didn't pan out after the prior 3 years (again). But I'm going to want to see him do this at the NFL level before getting a chub.

I actually like Wilson and I’m not trying to knock him here but are we really supposed to believe SDSU had the 6th best defense in the nation? I have my doubts that they would be able to hang with last years Bama, OSU, Clemson etc.

Statistically, so relative to competition played.

Yep. I can never be negatively surprised by the Jets. Expectations are sufficiently low that only upside surprise is possible.

Just history, statistics, one year wonder status, absurdly easy schedule.... that’s just the beginning.

what will we do if he’s a bust?

Half will be happy when he’s finally traded and the other half will argue he was let down by the Jets. The debate will continue for as long as he is in the league, possibly longer.

I actually like Wilson and I’m not trying to knock him here but are we really supposed to believe SDSU had the 6th best defense in the nation? I have my doubts that they would be able to hang with last years Bama, OSU, Clemson etc.

To the first point, neither can I. Never shocked or devastated by the Jets anymore.

To the second, one year wonder factor worries me a lot. A lot of guys have turned it on for a season and then fizzled out into nothing.

And finally you’re 100% right if he doesn’t work out. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the same people pooping champagne when we drafted him will be celebrating when he’s traded. Such a vicious cycle.

One thing we can all agree on it we hope he’s the one. Need at least 5-6 games to start to feel good or bad about it, though. In today’s NFL it’s relatively easy to see early on whether a QB has “it” or whether the game is too big for him. Jets need to learn to give up faster on bad QBs.

--Poor build
--Skinny
--Lacks great physical stature and strength
--Lacks mobility and ability to avoid the rush
--Lacks a really strong arm
--Can’t drive the ball downfield
--Does not throw a really tight spiral
--System-type player who can get exposed if forced to ad lib
--Gets knocked down easily

If you need to rely on literally the greatest outlier in the history of sport, you're proving a point alright, just not the one you think you are.

Thanks for the assist.

Week 3 I think it is vs the Pats he will see a sh*t ton of cover zero.  That’s when we will find out if he can adapt to NFL pressure.

I prefer he performs, of course, but I don't think it's a can vs. can't thing 3 games into his career. I haven't seen a zillion clips of him, but have seen some where he's faced pressure (which is why he's dropping back or rolling out, though I've seen some selected clips in  win4ever's writeup where he'd dropped back ~10 steps even when there's a clean pocket).

Plenty of QBs have had tough games against NE's defense; that doesn't therefore conclude they are unable to adapt to pressure. In c0, at least one receiver is likely to be either open since nobody is 4 lockdown corners deep; or (if the DB is visibly sticking closely to one) the WR have better position for a pass thrown in a certain spot where the receiver's body is between the DB and the ball (and further, with no "ghost" FS to come in & pick it off); or a WR may just have a matchup size advantage in general, where he's going to win most jump balls, so long as it's thrown just-so.

Theoretically, his being pretty mobile and having a really quick release should help a lot, plus someone manning up on a WR more tightly didn't seem to scare him into holding/eating it (admittedly, for better or worse at this next level, since we don't figure NFL DBs to be as inept as most that he faced at BYU). However if his processing/decision-making speed is a half or full second longer (masked at BYU because it appears he was able to buy himself 4+ seconds pretty easily), with pressure coming a second faster than he's used to as well - particularly unblocked with 1 more rusher than blocker in (two if a DLman requires  - then yeah it could be bad, if not downright ugly.

They seem to think the best of him, and it doesn't seem for lack of studying him (and others) on film. We'll see what we've got soon enough.

I think the lesson regarding Brady is that not everyone can be a Franchise QB, but a Franchise QB can come from anywhere. I'd completely support the Jets taking a QB flier in the ~6th round every year regardless of current QB situation.

This is solid post about quarterbacking in general, especially the processing speed.

The thing that I really think is important though is the coaching, which is obviously really subjective and tough for a regular fan or journalist to really see, but its a huge part of the conversation.

We all know the rules have changed dramatically in the past 5+ years but when you look around the league the same coaches are still doing a lot of the same things that were commonplace in 2015.  The good young coaches like Shanahan, Arthur Smith, and Lafleur/Reid (yes they have elite QBs) are using matchups, motion, and playcalling to make defenses think about more then 1 thing, and therefore slowing the rush or even requiring a LB to read and react as opposed to just teeing off on the QB.

The 2020 and 2021 Jets did not have a single player that commanded ANY attention from the defense and really hampered what we could do offensively.  My hope is that LaFleur can do some of the little things to help zach adapt to the speed of the NFL.  Yes a lot of is is OL.  Yes a lot of it is the talent of the QB.  But I believe we have an offensive philosophy that should help the QB rather then force the QB to do it all on his own.
