Why the Pats Win Super Bowls: Part Two, by Richard Seymour

I asked a few posters a few weeks ago to submit articles on why the Pat win Super Bowls and what it will take for the Jets to get there. The response was awesome. This week's article is from Richard Seymour, who is one of our most articulate and passionate posters. Check out his article on the front page! Great work, RS!!!

If anyone would like to present the Jets case as well, PM me, or E-mail me and we'll talk about setting it up. IMO, THE story for the Jets in the 05 season will be beating the Pats. This series of articles is an examination of that task. So, let's hear from you!

Good article RS - Brady I have given all the credit to when others have downplayed his significance in the Pats winning as one of the top if not the top QB in the game today based on his accomplishments.

Bellicheck ultimate test will come this year without his two top assistants and to see if they can continue to have the desire, work ethic and hunger to be successful again.

Sorry, but I couldn't get but about halfway through before I exed it out.

The big Patriot dick couldn't be any further implanted in all our asses...I didn't need an article to tell me that. If I want to look at gay porno, I'd check my PMs.

Uh, who have you been PMing with?

Wait, I don't want to know.

Yes, there's a bit of "Squeal like a piggie!" to this article, but weven though there's certainly a slant to it, it's basically true.

It was a good article and an interesting read, but I could've done without all the insults. TX was objective...guess I expected more from you.

Oh, and check your PMs.

Dude, those are just the old "Max on Max" and "Jerry Van Dyke on Jerry Van Dyke" clips from Conan. No big deal.

Actually this WAS objective (note that I emphasize that the Jets are a good team, that some players like Mawae DO get it, and don't take shots where there isn't a reason to), it was just unapologetic and merciless.

TX is too soft on you guys, you know? The man just doesn't say anything negative about the Jets.

Great job RS. I cant wait to see how all the whinny Jet fans try and spin the truth.

Two lines sum up the whole article:

1). Your front office is run by a pool-boy masquerading as an NFL GM who waited too long to cut bait on some bad contracts, signed Curtis Martin to a heinous extension that cost you any chance of keeping LaMont Jordan, and who consistently overpays for mediocrity. He trades half his draft for the privelege of paying an unproven DT prospect $54 million dollars.

2). Your quarterback is a nice guy. He

A lot of built up frustration came spewing out there! You should be over it by now. 3 lombardis should have calmed you down a bit by now. the viciousness was excessive. (unfortunately too many of your points hit close to home  ) Your luck has been well documented , mix it in with some good play great coaching and you have the patsies. But your time has come and is on the way out. lets see hc of nyj (bill) produce without his coordinators. When we had them they did things I see being done with your Pats now (plans and adjustments). Hard for me to believe that mr. belichek, who was a bum and booed out of cleaveland is all of a sudden George Halas. Granted he is a very GOOD coach but we know what good means dont we? The house of cards are about to crumble the stars arent aligned anymore.

So enjoy your victories (you'll always have them to fall back on when you suck again soon).

We dont have a GOOD headcoach but we are (hopefully) having two VERY GOOD coordinators. I'll take my chances with our two compared to your two this year. Might be just enough to swing the tide.

All that being said GREAT JOB on your article! :pats:

Too bad it's so hard for you to believe - it's true. Qute frankly, Belichick wasn't the huge bum in Clev that everyone thinks he was either. He had the guts to bench Kosar - the right, albeit unpopular, move. His drafts were suspect, true. But, a great coach learns from his mistakes. BB isn't the same micro-managing coach he once was. As Sey states in his article - BB is not a good coach, he's a GREAT coach.

Yet another Pompous post from a guy who actually believes he has had a hand in the Pats success and worse, fancies himself as a GM.

Exactly how would you know whether the Jets settle for just being good?. Are you in the locker room or was their a discussion on kffl?

Another example of a Pats fan who has forgotten what it was like pre-2001.

Anyone who ever thought the Yank fan was out of hand between 96-2000 needs to check out the trolls of Jet boards. PAThetic.

It's his opinion... yeesh!

I think that is why they call it the Editorial Section...

Another example of this would be how most of you think Joe Namath was one of the greatest of all-time. However, most of you have never seen him play - save for the edited clips you may have viewed - so how exactly can you say he was one of the greats?

No need - I remember! My emotional-knee jerk reaction. I'll never do it again.....three out of four SB's tend to make a person blindly follow you  Wow! I think I'm a BB flunkie!!! :ahhh:

Notice my tirades about Troy Brown?? An emotional issue for me. However, instead of killing BB over it - I've decided to hate Tim Dwight...yes, so very mature of me

seymour,

good article, but what did you really say?

summary: the pats are great b/c they hired the best coach, got lucky on a 6th rd choice and big mo lewis hit. the jets fo and coaching staff stinks.

i think you are right on with the pats, although you don't give enough credit to pioli and the assistants.

i think you are way off with the analysis of the jets. the jets hc is in his 1st stint as hc anywhere. remember bellichek failed miserably in his 1st go-around. bradway and herm are learning on the job and getting better (w/the exception of clock mgmt) each year.

the jets have a great core of young players that are a resuilt of good drafting and NOT overpaying to keep players - see mckenzie, jordan, ferguson, coles, moss. they are in position talent wise to competes for years to come (vilma, robertson, coleman, ellis, pennington, etc).

as far as herm goes, if he makes the same mistakes again this year then it is time for him to go. otherwise, he too has shown improvement, the players love him, and he corrects the mistakes he makes - cottrell replaced by hendu, hackett replaced with dinger.

Treading water to stay in playoff contention is settling for being good. Belichick could have done that when he took over for Carroll, but he gutted the roster and saw the team struggle through a 5-11 first season. Then with the addition of several key free agents and draft picks, he won the title.

The Jets like the Dolphins from mid-1970s to last season, have settled into a pattern that will keep them in contention most years, but prevent them from being great. Since Par$ells took over, the Jets have won 9, 12, 8, 9, 10, 6 and 10 games. A nice run. A good run, but not a great run. The Jets are headed in the right direction. If they can overcome Herm or he actually learns from his mistakes, the Jets might take the next step. Their defense took a great step. If the offense can take a similar step and Herm can be come more then an average coach, the Jets might be the Houston Oilers of the late 70s, the Phins or Broncos from the 80s, a good team that is a step below a great team or teams.

WTF? You think they are purposedly treading water?

Belichik was drowning before one Tom Brady stepped in.

I like RS. He's a good writer and I like reading his stuff.

But I am so tired of these "we are better than you" articles. They are giving me a headache.

I get it, I get it. You have won superbowls and we haven't.

The Pats are the greatest. The Jets aren't.

I get the message LOUD AND CLEAR.

You do everything right, We do everything wrong. Why we are the best, Why you are not.

The picture on top of these articles should be a Pats fan sticking his tongue out and the headline being na-na-na-na-na. you got no superbowls.

It's like a rich guy telling a middle class guy why he hasn't made more money.

Just because a team hasn't won a superbowl, It doesn't mean that they are a failure.

That's the point YJF. Guys like RS think being a Pats fan makes them subject matter experts and better citizens if you will. Theres 30 other franchises in the same boat as the Jets the last four years.

Seymour writes: "Greatness is no excuses, no bragging, no frills.

I guess RS forgot to practice the bragging part.

Yes.

VT was the starter for two years and if the team did not suck early in 2002, Chad would probably be someplace else right now. Curtis Martin's future replacement is not plying his trade somewhere else. How many think if the D did not totally blow in 2003 most of the starters would still be in Hempstead?

Herm has stumbled and bumbled his way through four years as a coach and is still there. How many F ups does he need to do before he gets canned? Time management. Letting a position coach over rule him.

The Jets do just enough to keep their heads above water. What would have happened if the Jets bit the bullet for 2001 and turned the reins over to Chad and Lamont? Where could you be now? You will never know because Chad and Lamont sat asa the Jets played it safe. Just like the playoffs, the Jets played not to lose.

Exactly WHAT has Lamont Jordan showed that now automatically makes as a "savior of franchises"

Just because you are a pats fan, does not make you automatically correct on every football opinion that is grey at best.

I love Lamont Jordan. Have since college. But what exactly would Lamont have done that Curtis already has.

Let's pretend that Martin didn't play last year. Was Lamont rushing for 1,700 yards and 12 tds. Maybe. If he could stay healthy and play all 16 games.

People act like Lamont was going to be a 3,000 yard back with The Jets.

The Jets drafted Jordan to replace Martin problem is Martin didn't decline,. He got better.

Perhaps if the coaching staff created competition @ every position during camp and honestly were willing to play the most capable player @ each position, fans would see a better product on the field.

YJF and Scott - That is the point.

The Jets do not take chances. Belichick took a chance Brady might develop into a great QB. He did. He took a chance that the hodge podge collection of OL will be able to replace Damien Woody. They did. He took a chance a rookie CB will be able to replace Lawyer Milloy. Ted Washington was replaced by Traylor and Wilfork. Now it looks like Samuel, Starks and Gay will be looked at to replace Ty Law.

The Jets had a very good consistent and reliable running back in Curtis Martin that was sucking up a good portion of the salary cap. Correct me if I am wrong on this, but I believe he is eventually going to cause the Jets to swallow hard. They drafted a RB with a vast amount of potential. 4 years later they still have a good reliable back, that has the salary cap hit hangin over his head and Lamont is playing ofr Oakland.

Would it be a surprise if he gains 1500 yards? No. I am not saying Lamont is Barry Sanders and Emiit Smith rolled into one, but he looks to be the real deal and unless forced, the Jets have been reluctant to change things.

Dare to be great.

Chad Pennington deserved to start before 2 and a quarter seasons had went by.
