Sean Payton: Broncos QB Zach Wilson to make 53-man roster

Jeff Legwold, ESPN Senior WriterAug 25, 2024, 09:50 PM ET

DENVER - The first step of Zach Wilson's career rebuild is nearly complete as Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton said Wilson will be one of three quarterbacks who will make the roster after its cut to 53 players.

The news comes after Wilson helped lead Denver to a 38-12 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Sunday's preseason finale.

Wilson said he is "grateful'' to have been traded to the Broncos and that "I'm loving it out here.'' Rosters leaguewide have to be whittled down to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET Tuesday.

The Broncos acquired Wilson in a trade with the New York Jets just before the April draft after the former No. 2 pick had three tumultuous seasons with the Jets. Wilson got the majority of the playing time Sunday against the Cardinals as the team's starter, rookie Bo Nix, was not in uniform. Fellow backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham played only the opening possession.

Wilson finished 16-of-25 passing for 251 yards with two touchdowns to go with 22 yards rushing and another touchdown. Asked about the extended playing time Sunday, easily his most of the preseason, Wilson said he feels a growing comfort level in the Broncos' offense.

"I can't think of any games in my career when it feels like we're getting into a rhythm [like Sunday],'' Wilson said. "Even if you go three and out and get stopped here and there [with the Broncos], you feel like you're going to put something together. It feels good to feel that as an offense. One bad play happens and you expect something good to happen on the next one.''

Wilson was in what was initially a three-way competition for the Broncos' starting quarterback job throughout the offseason as well as the first week of the training camp. But from the second week of training camp on it was Nix and Stidham who battled for the starting job and divided the work with the starters until Payton named Nix the starter last week.

But Wilson has said he thinks he has rediscovered parts of his game and Payton has consistently maintained there is a place for Wilson on the roster because of Wilson's potential and "arm talent.'' Payton said after Sunday's game that Nix, Stidham and Wilson will all be on the roster after the team makes its cuts.

"We've got enough money to ... I understand the question,'' Payton said Sunday when asked if all three would fit within the team's salary cap. "We feel comfortable with those three quarterbacks. I think I've told you already I see the three of them making it.''

On Wilson's play against the Cardinals, Payton added: "Look, he made some impressive throws. ... He's got a live arm down the field, I thought he threw it away when it wasn't there. ... [He] had plenty of time on the play clock, to get in and out of plays if need be. It's been the better part of the last two and half weeks [that he's played well].''

Payton said during practices this past week Wilson "was on bit of a heater.''

From his arrival in Denver, Wilson has said he hoped to smooth the rough edges that marked his time with the Jets. He had a 12-21 record in his 33 career starts in New York, didn't complete at least 56% of his passes in two of the three seasons and had 23 total touchdown passes to 25 interceptions.

Sunday, preseason finale or not, Wilson said it was important to him to play without a turnover, and the Broncos offense did not have a false start, delay of game or procedure penalty.

"I feel like I've played enough to avoid having those issues,'' Wilson said. "Just the operation, getting the ball out of my hands, just playing quarterback how I'm supposed to, putting our team in the best position possible.''

Wilson said, with the most career NFL starts of the Broncos' quarterbacks, he is ready to help Nix through any rough spots if he can as well.

"We all want to play, we all want to be on the team,'' Wilson said. "We all want to do the best, but we all understand the other person's side of it so we all have each other's back. I want them all to do the best they can ... If I can be any sort of resource or help to [Nix] ... I will.

"I was excited for him, I don't think it was a surprise to a lot of people ... [But] I told him I'm excited for him,. I really believe they're putting him in a good situation.''

This couldn’t have gone into that long winded Zach thread?

I don’t know what is more pathetic, Zach playing QB or the posters in this forum that feels everything this guy does whether positive or negative warrants its own thread.

I really don't think we understand how humiliating it is and obviously a curse from the football gods if this dude ends up being a great QB somewhere else.

Rodgers better be MVP this year. I can't take this

We're already going to see Darnold play good this year in Minnesota. You know it and I know it.

He’s in position to come off the bench and drive a spike into the Jets owner, GM, HC and fan bases hearts.   I expect a Phil Simms/ Eli Manningish SB performance at some point in the near future.

I’m looking forward to it.  The thought of checking out using sleeping pills or a gun seems like the easy way out.

See you in hell @TomShane If you get their first save me a warm beer.

We'll see.  I'm not saying he will, but if Zach winds up learning, fully regaining his confidence and swagger, he could make you have to eat your words.

You know what? I’m naming you the President of Zach Fan Nation. If he tanks or does well, you’re the person I’m coming to for answers.

I loved the part where he said he’d be able to give Nix “advice” along the way. Like what? If things start to go bad for you, just tell your mommy and she’ll have the coach fired?

He’s grown as a person. You ? Still 15 year old looking for positive rep.

Like Zach hasn't overcome a ton of adversity?  Think about all the crap flung at him (especially by the fans, media, and Rodney Harrison), yet he's never said a bad word about anyone.  Instead he's worked to improve and continue to figure things out as an NFL QB.  Imo, he's way tougher than he's given credit for.

LMAO!  I've said it before but I absolutely think his looks (which are probably better than 99% of the people on this forum) are a big reason why people make fun of him.  I'm guilty of it as well, btw.

I didn't watch the game at all. So far I've seen one play: the 46-yard TD pass.
In preseason especially, they should be judging what was done rather than what the outcome ended up being. Just like not penalizing a QB for a perfect pass that was dropped (let alone one bouncing off a receiver's hands, popping up into the air, and getting picked).
In this case? The outcome was good (of course), but the pass itself sucked.
His receiver was WIDE open and he threw him into coverage. Yeah he came down with it for a TD, but then consider it was against a non-NFL-level safety who was stuck all alone covering two WRs running parallel, full speed go-ish routes 15 yards away from each other, and it ended up as an unnecessarily close, contested catch that was still barely completed.
It should've been thrown to the outside shoulder down the sideline, like to the hash-mark at the 4-5 yard-line where it would've been impossible for the safety to cover enough ground to get there because he was also covering the guy running straight up through centerfield.
The video quality sucks here, but even the players' white and red blobs are easy to see:

Keep in mind at the time the ball was released Johnson (89)'s back wasn't yet turned away from the sideline, there's a solid 8 yards of open space to the receiver's right, and there's plenty of time to adjust underneath such a long pass, and instead of using it Zach gives even a 4th-string camp-fodder safety a chance at batting this away or the receiver just losing the ball's visibility through the DB's raised arms.
Just like there's throwing a guy open -- this is throwing a wide open guy into coverage.
He still sucks.
If this is a show-off play for anyone it's the WR.
There were much better throws than this .. I agree this was not a good throw. He also had one of two 'zach' sacks and threw a ball directly into the stomach of a rushing DL.

He did make a number of mid range throws where you could see what makes him intriguing... Overall his short game is light year from where it was two years ago, and he had one really long scamper.

He's got a long road to follow if he's going to end up being anything... But it was far from an embarrassing performance... We'll see what Payton can do ...

Maybe the Jets are a bigger dumpster fire than we realize, but he did decline to play last season. Not sure how much he’s overcome, he’s had it pretty good to date. And he was able to work a trade to get to where he wanted to be on the west coast. Zach’s probably best attribute is knowing he’s rich and it doesn’t really matter anyways.

Maybe, but being rich can destroy your motivation too.  The fact that he can live it up off his parents' money but he's still out there doing what he loves (despite taking all that heat) could mean that he really cares about improving.

The bro is *rumored to be* clinging to the 53rd roster spot on one of the worst teams in football and you guys want to act like he took the hill at Dunkirk or some sh*t.
