Why is it that it works like that. If it's a movie that the girl wants to see then the man sure as hell better go but if it's a movie the man wants to see he winds up going by himself? By the way, I've been married for going on 11 years, I already know the answer.

Whatever it takes my friend.

OK, getting Movie agenda formulated for this weekend:

Will see two or three..Here are possibilities:

Indies (for ALK's use):

Brothers Bloom

http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/brothersbloom

will probably see this..

My Life in Ruins

http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/mylifeinruins

Greek Wedding Two from what I hear..But I like romantic comedies, although Mainstreams seem to pull this genre off better than Idies do.

Tyson

http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/tyson

may see this as Tyson frequented my wifes Uncles restaurant/bar in Catskill for many years..

Mainstreams:

The Hangover

http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/hangover

Early reviews are decent, may see this

Land of the Lost

http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/landofthelost

Will wait on the reviews, the trailers look hilarious, but as we all know with trailers..........

Tyson is the only one that interests me from the Indy list. I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to talk the wife into letting me see both The Hangover and Land of the Lost while on vacation.

SJ, you liked A History of Violence?

I honestly thought it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

yes liked it a lot...

it was also very well recived by most reviewers..might just not have been your cup of tea..

what recent , last year or two, movies have you thought great? I can narrow your genre down from that and make suggestions..

Oh, I know it was incredibly well received, I think that's what bothered me about it too. I thought the writing was awful, and the acting was pure camp. Admittedly, I watched it not realizing it was a graphic novel. But, it almost seemed more like an exercise in filmmaking than an actual film.

Add to that the fact that I think the pacing was too slow and it was just a painful experience for me.

I've forgotten most of it at this point, but I recall one line at the end, 'Looks like you're still pretty good at the killing', that me and this girl who I saw it with both burst out laughing at.

I just completely didn't get it. The film seemed almost egotistical. That's why I was so shocked by those who liked it.

I'll have to think about recent films... honestly, haven't been to the theater much, and am kind of an old man when it comes to movies in the 'they don't make 'em like the used to' kind of way.

My favorite films are Cuckoos Nest, A Clockwork Orange, Strangelove, Casablanca, Annie Hall, Silence of The Lambs, Apocolypse Now, and for some more modern Sling Blade, Primal Fear, Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind, Garden State and the obvious cliches, Requiem for a Dream, Fight Club, Snatch, Usual Suspects and Memento.

Of the 2008 Films, I'd make a case for Wall-E being the best (even with the overly preachy ending). A lesser known film, In Bruges was right up there with Slumdog for me. I liked TDK, but thought The Wrestler was pretty overrated.

I really liked Juno, but thought No Country was also overrated, outside of O Brother, which I thought was a masterpiece, I never really got the Cohen Brothers. I do want to see Before the Devil Knows Your Dead.

But yeah, out of all your movies listed, HoV stood out to me as one that left an especially bad taste in my mouth. Ever see Dogville, that's another one I especially disliked.

I thought the book was 10x better. They did an all right job of making Bardems Anton seem that brutal. Cormac's books are very vivid like that. Overall though it was pretty hyped up but you being in the industry... you know many things are just that, all hype.

And a movie like There will be blood... I didnt' think the movie was that great... I think you take Out DDL and it's a totally different flick.

Both films were made on the performance of their villian/anti-hero IMO.

I thought in No Country the character was just good... but in There Will Be Blood, I thought he was downright brilliant... so, that made it a good film for me.

But you're right about hype, and how none of it really means anything... check out this review for the show I'm on now...

http://www.ew.com/ew/tv/tonights_best_tv/0,,5,00.html

The guy tells you how much crap the whole show is, then says, but it's entertaining, and proceeds to give it an A. And this is Entertainment Weekly.

I thought There Will Be Blood was a fantastic movie. I liked it better than No Country. And obviously it would be different without DDL, that is a meaningless statement. Lewis's performance was just so brilliant however and the way PT Anderson portrayed everything that was happening was just incredible. The soundtrack was great too.

if you have netflix you need to get a movie called "Once were warriors". it is a little dated now but an excellent movie.

Basically, when I watched the Oscars with my wife she was disappointed that Old Country beat There will be blood. Although I didn't think Old Country was really worthy of the Oscar my point was that I think as MOVIE and OVERALL the movie was better... because if you took DDL out of There will be blood... that movie could potentially suck. Old Country held it's own and I won't say it sucked, it was a good movie. Anderson did a fantastic job directing but DDL just kept you glued to that screen, just how he sunk more and more into his madness and obsession.

Anyone ever see the movie: 'Rails & Trails' or 'Trails & Rails', its from 2007, about a man who runs a train and kills a boys mother and the boy and he form a strong relationshiop after that, and has other side stories going on as well, sad ending, but it was a really, really good movie.

nothing like the huge screen and movie experience, socially,,I pick theaters that dont have alot of teens/kids and huge crowds, and people who come in late alot and talk during movies, especially screaming at horror flicks

Agree.

I find that problems only arise during summer blockbuster type movies. Those movies tend to bring out the rambunctious kids and the talkative teenagers.

For the most part, people are well behaved in the cinemas by me.

agree....

Plus its wide to pick a cinema near yo uwhere the 'date' crowd doesnt go as much..I have 6 theaters near me, and one in particular is a littl eoff beaten path and not many go,,can get a good seat with 1 minute before movie..

but there is always the moron factor wherever you go,,cell phone, texting so u see the blue neon screen constantly, people bringing infant or small kid to a R rated flick..

But thats not real common..

In thetaer where I go they make a announce, ment before flick 'we know u know not to use cellphone, BUT texting is not allowed either'

I couldn't find the UP review thread so here goes

I saw it in 3D, and was still bored. I love pixar movies, I watched toy story and monsters last week with my 3 year old

this movie gets a "meh" from me. my biggest criticism was the choice of antagonist. I thought his character would have been much better suited for the "surprise rescuer who comes out of nowhere" role instead. They really could have done better there.

  • 2 weeks later...

Looks like this weekend will be the mainstream romantic comedy, average reviews so far 'The Proposal' and the Indie 1930s period film 'Easy Virtue'. Any flick with Jessica Biel, Kristin Scott Thomas and Colin Firth is OK in my book. :D

The Jack Black flick 'Year One' has such horrific reviews I think I will save for a few weeks from now if there is nothing else to see. Plus it will be at dollar theater by then with these reviews :(

Finally going to see The Hangover tonight. :headbang: At this point I'm not sure if I'm going to see Land of the Lost in the theater.

ALK (wtf is your 1st name anyways) , Land O Lost was soso, but it was 56 year old me, and 55 year old Mrs SJ..

I think worth movie bucks if you bring kids, they will like I think,,pretty funny for that genre..

sort of like the way I viewed 'Journey to Center of Earth' when I was kid, but more yuks..

But Hangover man....hang on to your soda..there is belly laughs galore, u may spill..

remember what i said..DO NOT BE LATE!!!

The 1st 5 minutes of film set up the brother of bride character perfectly!!!

First name is Jeremy. I must have missed your review of Land of the Lost. We might go see it tomorrow now that I think about it. My son has been wanting to take one of his friends to do something. We might see if he wants to go see that tomorrow night after his swim meet.

You'll probably be interested in this SJ. The film that they shot in our town appears to be gaining a little momentum. It has been selected by the IFP as one of their movies this year pretty much guaranteeing that it will see some film festivals although Sundance isn't in the bag.

http://aupairkansasmovie.wordpress.com/

cool, if it gains more steam I will talk to my friend who owns the 2 local Indie theaters in raleigh to get it.. PLUS, Traci Lords is in it :D
