Jets GM John Idzik declined to commit to Geno Smith as his 2014 starting quarterback.

Smith started all 16 games as a rookie, averaging just 190.3 passing yards per day while throwing 21 interceptions, four lost fumbles and 12 touchdowns. The Jets aren't just going to hand him the gig for next season. "We're all excited about having Geno as part of the Jets but we will always look to improve every position in any manner we can ... We'll look at quarterbacks, yes we'll look at quarterbacks," said Idzik. The New York Daily News expects Smith to compete with a draft pick or free agent acquisition in training camp. Mark Sanchez is expected to be released.

This is good news. I was wondering what the organizations temperature was in regards to Geno. I'd love for them to draft someone in the first three or four rounds like McCarron or Garoppolo as opposed to the free agent re-treads.

Start Matt Simms....if this is the case im hoping for them to keep Simms as the backup and then prove himself in camp as the 2nd. Wasting a pick on a QB in the 1st or 2nd is unnecessary. fill this team with skill players so any QB can start. How many of you knew Nick Foles was gonna be starter...F a 1st round QB.

C'mon Joewillie, be serious. As I and many others have said, Geno definitely had some rough spots in his rookie year, but earned the right to compete for the starting job next season. Surround him with receivers who can actually get open, and he will definitely improve

ALL of the following would be better than Geno:

Manziel

McCarron

Bridgewater

Bortles

Carr

Murray

Mettenberg

Garrapolo

McCown

Vick

Cutler

Cousins

But REX could ruin any of them in a heartbeat.

No they wouldn't give the kid a break he threw for 3000 yards with garbage WRs.  We need to develop our own draft pick QB who is pretty decent we finished 8-8 with a team many didn't project to win 3 games.

Give him a legitimate #1 -#2 WR and then decide until then SHUT THE HELL UP.

Johnny Football is a god, and would dominate the Jets like our namesake. And as far as SHUT THE HEEL UP, not until we run out of COORS LITE.

Happy New Year? Well almost but they brought back Rex.

The best thing they can say about their own product is that it's cold. Lol. As if other beers don't also fit in the refrigerator.

People who drink this would probably also sign every free agent who hits the market.

Oh, Im all for him competeing for the JOB, but he will be beaten out by any of the above, unless the Jets are braindead (which they may be as they retained Rex) and not bring in another QB.

No, just FA QB's like McCown, or Cutler, or Vick, or trade for Cousins etc, but NOT GENO.

He earned the right to compete, nothing more. We are supposed to think he improved because he stopped fumbling and was intercepted less late in the season, and stopped doing that "Madden" thing of backing up in the Pocket? Not buying it.

Off last nigh's tremedous game  I would be shocked in the Texans doi not jump on Manziel.

BY most accounts he was beaten out by Simms. Do think it's a healthys ign Idzik ws noncommittal, but the "competition" thing didn't matter much this season. I think SMith is awful in a Sanchez kind of way, and know Simms has the best arm of anyone the Jets have ahd since Testaverde. Whether he can do the other things, we don't know and we could've found out the last few games. Didn't happen.

May, 2014 dream scenario:

With the 1st pick, the Houston Texans select TEDDY BRIDGEWATER QB, Louisville

We have a trade, The NY JETS trade this years #1, #2, and next years #2, to the St Louis Rams (via Washington) , and select

JOHNNY MANZIEL, QB, TA+M

Oh, and then Fire Rex.

The Texans have to top pick and are in Texas, and are dumping Schaub. Would bet a serious sum Maziel off last night's latest incredible game is not getting past them.

this is the worst idea. simms obviously couldn't beat him this year. so you want to have them go into training camp with the competition between him and geno? we need to upgrade........we will be bringing someone else in to compete or possibly even be handed the job if it were someone good enough. geno vs simms in training camp would be the biggest mistake they could make

I agree. BUT I can dream. Houston is 100% taking this kid. He will turn that Franchise upside down.

Great new coach: O'Brien

Great new QB:      Manziel

Then the JETS:

Same old Mediocre Coach: Ryan

Same old awful QB:             Smith

Happy New Year.
