Phil Simms rips 2014 QB Class (MERGED)

Randy Thomas should have been resigned and we should have held onto Santana Moss.

Coles was a better fit for the type of offense we ran.  Moss would have excelled under a big-armed QB like Testaverde and maybe even Favre.  But alas, our QB was Chad Pennington.

Thomas is one I'd forgotten about, but didn't the Redskins completely overpay all the guys we let go?  And did Thomas even do well in Washington?

How?  He's a below average run blocker (on a run-first team) who probably wants more than he's worth.  And until we lose him and he has success elsewhere your argument is moot.  Par for the course for you.

Even if he does have success elsewhere, I don't see the validity of the comparison.  Howard was an UDFA who they developed into a successful starter and simply may lose to FA.  Farrior was a top pick who was completely misused and did nothing here before going on to be a key component to one of the league's top defenses for many years.  It's entirely different situations.

Yep.  The fact that negotiations are taking a while should be considered a good thing.  We shouldn't cave to whatever Howard thinks his market value is, nor should we be quick to let him go easily without a replacement in waiting.

I was really just including Goodwin as a concession to the other side of the argument.  Farrior is really the only relevant player in the Woody Johnson era to fit this argument.

By "Some" do you mean Pac?

Do not get me in trouble with Pac. Pac and I are good friends, and I even defend his city of Rochester which seems to be under constant attack.

He can take care of himself when it comes to Sanchez.

This goes back to what Smashmouth was saying yesterday and I agreed with him. What it comes down to is the Jets for some unknown reason just don't seem to be able to get the production out of a LOT of their players than the teams who pick them up from us do. The Danny Woodhead example is the perfect one. "look at that little (blank)ker run!" was Rex's statement on Hard Knocks. then it came down to keeping either him or Joe McKnight-a guy with no heart or a guy who plays only WITH heart, who do we take? Same as it ever was same as it ever was same as it ever was....

And what, from this list, makes you come to the conclusion that we are more of a "Gets good talent but let's it go to be successful elsewhere" franchise than a "Generally can't draft for sh*t" franchse?

2003. 2009, and 2010 have to be 3 of the worst drafted classes in the entire NFL. Who was our scout those years, Stevie Wonder?

So wait, did the argument become that the Jets should never allow a player to leave who might have some degree of success at any point throughout the remainder of their career?  Forget the list itself, that just seems to be an excessively different argument than the one originally presented.  You can't tell me that you couldn't make a similar list for every single team in the NFL using that criteria, especially when it covers a 13-year time span and you start including players like Cotchery who asked to be cut and then went on to be a #4 WR for his next two years in the league (two years which combined were about the same as his last year with the Jets), before finally moving up to #3.

I don't know, I just saw his list and thought it was fairly thorough. Of course, you could make a list for other teams but certainly, one that comes to mind, that seems to unload players at just the right time is NE and our arch enemy, Belichick.

Ty Law

Richard Seymour

Matt Cassell

We've pretty much never had players the caliber of Ty Law, Richard Seymour or Randy Moss to "unload at the right time".

Revis comes to mind, but I'd say we DID unload him at the right time.  We picked up a 1st rounder and a 3rd/4th for a guy coming off an ACL tear, who the Bucs are now rumored to be trying to get rid of after stupidly agreeing to tie up 1/6 of their cap space on him via a series of, essentially, 1 year contracts.  We turned that into Sheldon Richardson, the DPOY who has the look of a guy who will be a perennial Pro Bowler.

Again, the problem isn't the players we've let go or the timing when we allowed them to leave.  It's not acquiring talent in the first place.

Ehh, the Pats just don't like to pay their free agents besides Brady and a few others. Samuel went on to have 3 probowl and 2 all pro seasons after he left and Seymour had two pro-bowl appearances and 1 all-pro season.  It worked because they still had Brady and Wilfork, but it's not like they saw their play rapidly deteriorating or anything.

You said left for NOTHING. Moss and Vilma were traded. I brought up Woodhead, and he's not impressive to me, but whatever. He and Ihedigbo are the only players relevant to the Rex years. Farrior did nothing under Parcells, how long were we supposed to stick with him? It would've been hard to find a Jet fan who didn't like getting Coles back for Moss at the time, but hindsight and all that, I guess.

Goodwin and Dreesen would've been nice, but seriously, these guys are worth whining about?

And Kellen Clemens? o_0

Dating back to Parcells, this is the list you come up with? This backs up the idea that the Jets are constantly letting go quality talent in your mind?

Love ya, man, but you'll forgive me if I vehemently disagree.

CBS NFL analyst and former NFL quarterback Phil Simms says he likes Geno Smith better than any quarterback available in the upcoming NFL Draft.

"If you’re the New York Jets you’ve got to sit there and go, ‘Wow, good thing we made a move last year and we didn’t wait until this year,’" Simms told SiriusXM’s Adam Schein on Wednesday. "My first thought is just physically and how he played at the end of the year I would be pretty happy going, ‘Man, all right, we got a guy.’ I think if Geno Smith was in this draft class he would be the number one guy, without question."

Simms characterized Bridgewater’s arm as "middle of the pack," questioned Manziel’s explosiveness and arm strength and took issue with Bortles’ throwing motion and slow 40-yard dash time.
