The Mets would have had to beat out the Manaea/Brooks offer, which means Oakland probably stood firm on asking for Matz, which explains why the phone call they had right before the KC trade went down was short and sweet. In a followup tweet, Rosenthal clarifies that Papelbon will be taking millions less to leave the Phillies, so it seems the final season of his deal will be restructured. Really?
