The Dodgers are the model they are trying to emulate.

Stock with talent through vigorous scouting, invest in analytics to develop that talent and use your system to promote players to reinvigorate the talent pool continually, and sell some of those chips in years that you are close and go for it.

The Wilpons had the entire Mets system run on a shoestring. Behind in many areas of player development. The well was mostly dry. Unfortunately, it is a long process to prime that pump.

They tried to go the "quick fix" route of propping up the mlb club with expensive talent, to at least sate the fans, but it has failed.

The biggest misstep they made under the Cohen ownership was the trade for Javier Baez in year one. They gave up some good talent in that trade. I think that was Cohen trying to make a splash that year, and it stalled the process a little bit.

Gotta have David Stearns this off-season. So much hinges on that.

I’m a huge fan of how they’ve replenished the farm so quickly, it’s impressive. And I definitely understand going with the best players available in drafting and trade offers but their system is like, all shortstops now. Kinda weird, no? Have to assume they’re just hoping they can convert them over time.

Traditionally, your best athletes on your team play shortstop.  If they are your best athletes, that means that they should have the ability to play almost position. Notably, if they have the skills to play shortstop, they should easily adapt to second or centerfield.

If you can have great athletes at SS, 2b and CF, the rest of your team becomes easier to build and you fill in the outer pieces. Build through the middle (SS, 2b, CF, C) which is what you see the Mets doing.

They absolutely have to develop the upper levels of pitching in the system. Tidwell is looking good, but still a ways away. Vasil is closer, but struggling a bit at AAA. If the Mets can trade off one of Quintana, Scherzer or Verlander, would love for them to go hard after Julio Urias. He is having a down year, and that might set him up as a real bargain for a great pitcher that is just coming into his prime.

Scherzer probably in the move now for Texas’ top SS 😂

Early reports say Acuna (their 3) and their #15 prospect. That would be an absolutely incredible haul for Max and you gotta assume the Mets will be paying a ton of his remaining contract with that type of return.

He can opt out after this year and become a FA again, I dont think he does that though, no way he gets 40+ again.

Good deal by the mets.

By the way, the real kid to watch in the system is Jett Williams, one of their first round picks last year.

19 years old, at A ball, 5' 6" 175 lbs. .426 OBP with 32 steals this year. Spark plug kind of kid that NY will love.

I'll bet he walks a lot. Smaller strike zone.  Takes me back to my youth.

Joe Klecko being interviwed during the Mets game.  Talking about who he chose to introduce him.  How he had to fight in the street as a kid all the time and how that made him tough and drive to win.  OMG... he's getting very emotional, tearing up .  I have to record this.  Promises opening line at HoF induction will be great.   Great interview.

at citifield during 2nd inning or 3rd.  About a 3/4 minute interview.

Thanks. I caught it in time to rewind saw it. I got teary eyed FFS seeing that. Klecko and the '82 team brings out emotion in me as well.

Joe, Darrelle, and Nick are at the top of my faves all time.

Have to give Cohen a lot of credit here. He chipped in $35m in future Scherzer contract, in order to secure a premium young talent.

The Mets are trying to get younger, more athletic and have flexibility. Look at the Diamondbacks, Orioles and Reds for examples of athletic, dynamic young players. The new rules reward speed and athleticism in the game again.

Interesting report by Gelbs yesterday, saying chemistry was off all year, and he is right.

This is all about Cohen and the direction of the Mets. I'm just surprised how fast he was willing to give up on the agenda with the two top vet pitchers going into August. I'm not so sure he's willing to lose money so the Mets win a championship. We know he's a lifetime Mets fan but so were the Wilpons. But above that he's a big time business person and he's willing to lose money to make money. If his ideas on building a casino etc in the area which could make him a lot of money fall through would he stick it out and take financial losses with the team.

Hopefully he is learning that the way to win is investing in scouting and player development rather not paying $80M per year for two 38–40-year-old arms.  As difficult as it may be to watch them over the next two months, I like what they are doing.  Commit to rebuilding the farm system, go get David Stearns in the offseason and give him more of a clean slate.

Hopefully building around a 38-year-old arm will work out better for our football team.

Even for just Acuna, that's an unreal deal. A few weeks ago there were scouts all over saying the Mets would not get a top prospect back for Max given his age and late season problems. He's instantly the best bat in the Mets farm system.

It will be interesting to see if Cohen is willing to foot a similar bill for Verlander now.

Maybe it's just me but it sure does seem like guys are getting called up at a much younger age in this era.

Wish Baltimore would show some interest in Verlander. They have like 9 guys in MLB’s top 100 prospects.

The Orioles and Reds are clearly the best takers on paper for that but the thing is their systems are so heavy on hitters. Mets really need 1-2 more top pitchers in the pipeline because their system is absolutely stacked with infielders now.

On the other hand if you're trading for teenagers I guess you can argue for just getting the best guy you can get regardless.

Here's a thought: Andrew Painter just had Tommy John and the Phillies are built to win right now. The thought of helping them disgusts me but the guy is the best pitching prospect in the minors and won't be pitching in the majors for at least another two years. They can take on some of Verlander's money and the Mets could even throw in Pham or Brooks Raley as a kicker. That's a pretty fair deal for both teams.

I did too.  Caught me off guard.  Had the game on in the background to see the team in shock over Max and then saw Klecko with his g-daughter on his shoulder being interviwed.  Wish I recorded it.  Anyone can see that his passion still oozes out of every pore.  Unlike that other HoF inductee that played here.

I just have always hated the Phillies. Of course the Braves need to be nuked.  Including Chipper.
