How they gonna get all these guys playing time? Should be fun watching these fresh legs sub in flying off the EDGE. I can’t remember another time when our DLine was this deep

Didn’t love the pick but McDonald will likely contribute more this year than a young (developing) OT since the Jets don’t rotate on the OLine.  Look for him to replace Lawson in 2024 when the Jets let Lawson walk & accumulate some comp points.

A few thoughts

1. This will be at least the 10th time I mention it this off-season (lol) but it seems like JFM will move inside full time.  Credit to him for becoming a good run defender

2. The Jets seem to be employing a base + specialist approach across the DLine

Base Defense

LDE:  JJ

LDT: JFM

RDT:  Q

RDE:  Clemons or Lawson

Pass Sets

LDE:  Huff

DT:  rotation of JFM, Jefferson & Q

RDE:  Lawson + McDonald

Run Sets

LDE:  JJ

LDT:  Woods? or Draft

RDT:  Q

RDE:  Clemons

One more solid, true DT and this will be scary, still a few available in FA. — Then If they resign Kwon and draft Branch you’re looking at a defense potentially even scarier than last year. Overall the philosophy may be: “Hey Aaron, we only need 20 points today”

I believe Chuck Clark is Kwon’s replacement.

Jets wanted to get faster overall and better at covering tight ends.

Could be wrong and Kwon is signing his contract now ;).

I wonder if the team thinks Michael Clemons might be able to play DT for us.

To me its doubtful given that he is going to be 26 on opening day so im not sure how much weight he could put on, even though for someone 6'5 270 he is pretty cut.  I just dont see him getting over 280 - which would be really light for a DT.

I also wonder what happens to DT in 2024 because we are not going to be able to afford to invest in a FA and will need all the rookies to contribute as I cant see keeping Huff given the drafting McDonald.

I can 100% see them rotating in Clemons at DT, especially on passing downs.  I'd rather have two of Lawson/Huff/McDonald/Johnson on the edge over Clemons.

Im not worried about passing downs whatsoever.  We have an excellent pass rush, especially considering that Quinton Jefferson is an excellent pass rusher and struggles vs the run.  We also can move JFM inside and have multiple edge rushers and will be playing with a lead more then we ever have before.

Its more our run defense which seems like its still a huge problem

Add in Clemons.

I think Thomas' role may be relegated to the bench/goalline/backup in case of injury rather than regular rotation player.

Starters: QW/Jefferson- starters in the inside, JFM/Lawson- starters at DE, with JFM moving inside occasionally.

Rotation: JJ/Clemons/Huff at DE, with Clemons moving inside occasionally.

*McDonald, while he will be used primarily as a pass rusher, will most likely be designated as a LB. Maybe this is splitting hairs. But I think he will line up outside the front 4 in certain situations and either fall back into zone coverage or (most likely) rush the passer.

Primarily though, he will line up in a wide nine because of his elite bend, with the only goal of getting the QB and limited run stop responsibility. This is where we will see this college DE, now NFL LB, make a big impact as an NFL DE in a Wide Nine, lol.

To be honest, it seemed like our run defense was only gashed by a couple terrific run teams that had great running backs and run games. Without looking anything up, I remember the Browns and the Hawks ran all over us. These were both teams that had really good RBs and run games last year- Chubb/Hunt, K.Walker. Can you name some other games where we were annihilated in the run game?

Just saying. I think there's some revisionist history. The Jets were so good with their pass defense and their defense overall was so good but because their offense was so atrocious that if the D was not perfect a loss was imminent we now look at the D as having deficiencies. 'Can't create turnovers', 'can't stop the run game'. I  think the D was totally fine last year, better than fine. We just need to start scoring points.

@Beerfish is going to love the Becton/McDonald TC competition…

He can’t lose! He will have something to complain about on every snap!

Why do they not have oline rotations?  I mean they get tired and some of them are better run blockers vs pass blockers.

We need to have about 10 oline on the roster and rotate them so that each only plays about 30% of the the time.

Same with WRs.  We need to cut garret wilsons snaps to about 60% so he is fresh every play.
