2-4 Start a Statistical Anomaly?

Through six games, the Jets are 2-4, but they have a +5 point differential. The disparity between their 2-4 record and +5 point differential can be largely blamed on their poor kicking; they’ve made just 67% of their field goal attempts (4 misses total).

The Titans had a very similar start. They were 2-4, but had a +6 point differential over that span. If it weren’t for their 44% field goal percentage (5 misses total), they probably would have had a better record to match their positive point differential.

It is very rare to see a team start its season in this specific fashion. Over the past 15 seasons, the 2024 Jets and 2019 Titans are the only two teams to start 2-4 with a positive point differential and a sub-70% field goal percentage.

If the Kicker misses another game changing kick they need to replace him. He is currently a liability for close games which many are.

We had a guy who was a good kicker who has been playing like a bad kicker and have lost 2 games in large part due to missed kicks. Is it unreasonable to look at the kicker given the context?

The thought process on here is wild sometimes. 

We have a kicker problem. We didn't last year. It doesn't mean it's the only problem, btw. This is another weird common theme on here. You can't discuss a problem or a potential improvement without some smooth brain pointing out it's not going to fix everything.

This seems nonsensical.

We fired the HC/demoted the OC 1 game ago and the new WR has yet to play a snap.

Meanwhile, people are the blaming the kicker for the 2-4 record because he missed a potential game-winning kick as well as another 2 chip shots that probably cost us a second game.

He probably should have already been replaced

he missed in the preseason, he missed a kick in the NE game, he missed the game-winning kick against Denver, and he missed two chip shots against the Bills that killed our chances in that game. Already too many misses.

Kickers are only the leading scorers for every team in every season. No big deal!!

Pointing out a statistical anomaly is not saying they aren't actually 2-4. It's just pointing out that 1) this rarely happens and that 2) statistical anomalies tend to revert to the mean.

Fact:  the kicker did kill us on two of the games.  You are right.  It is indeed time to heave a large chunk of blame directly at Greg's leg, which seems to have been infected by the polio virus.   Not saying he is the "only" blame whatsoever, which is how the typical reader in the forum will misinterpret, but his defective leg gets plenty of well deserved balme. 4-2 <-----> 2-4.  Greg. Laid an Egg.  Stay on the team?  Not even if he begs.     And sure, there is plenty of other blame to toss around as well.  But this kicker is atrocious.

Let’s not forget that he essentially missed an extra point that was miraculously called good. He’s totally shot and everyone could see it during the preseason except the coaching staff. Amazing.

I remember pointing out that the 2013 Jets that went 8-8 were outscored by 97 points (6th worst in the league), which would be more in line with a 4-win team.  I also remember getting screamed at for having the audacity to suggest the 2014 team, with very few changes that offseason, were set for a disastrous campaign.

Result:  4-12, Rex Ryan fired.

It was always a bit strange to me that virtually no punters in the league also double as an emergency place kicker.

That way, if your starter is clearly struggling, you at least have the in-game option of "going to the bench" to try and get the job done.
