Panthers' Carr misses 2nd straight practice; Testaverde on deck

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- David Carr threw gingerly on the side, but wasn't ready to practice. Vinny Testaverde scrambled to learn the playbook and get his 43-year-old body ready. Rookie Matt Moore just tried to keep up.

Thursday produced few answers for the Carolina Panthers as they try to figure out who will start at quarterback Sunday against Arizona.

Carr, listed as No. 1 with Jake Delhomme set to undergo season-ending elbow surgery, missed practice for a second straight day with a sore back.

"It was better today," Carr said. "I threw some balls and it wasn't as uncomfortable as I thought it would be."

Carr acknowledged he didn't try to drop back or run. Instead, he watched practice wearing shorts and a T-shirt.

"It was a little tight on the release," Carr said of his brief throwing session. "But it should feel better (Friday). If it does, I'll try to practice some."

Testaverde, signed on Wednesday, and the undrafted Moore, signed just over a month ago, took all the snaps for the second straight day. Coach John Fox wouldn't say which player he'd use if Carr can't go.

But Testaverde, who turns 44 next month and was cut by New England in the preseason, would appear to be the front-runner. Entering his 21st NFL season, Testaverde has impressed his new teammates with his arm strength and how quickly he's picked up the offense.

"He's got some familiarity with the system we've run and the coaches we have here," Fox said. "Hopefully he's a quick study. I think he is and he's shown that ability just in the last two days."

would that make vinny the oldest starting qb in nfl history.. warren moon was 41 when he started in '97...

anyone i missed?

Steve DeBerg was older when he started against us in '98. I only remember it b/c Atlanta was awesome that year & Chandler's injury was like a magic gift. They were 5-1 at the time & after our 1-game luck-out with DeBerg QB'ing they didn't lose another game until Denver beat them in the superbowl.

Just looked it up. DeBerg was about 44 yrs, 9 mos give-or-take a week. Born Jan 1954 & we played him in week 7 (mid-October) 1998. He sucked pretty badly, but our pass defense kicked ass in '98.

They might start Vinny, they started Carr over Moore. You never know.

Matt Moore was on Dallas's roster opening day. He's only been with Carolina for a month so Carr would have been an obvious starter ($$) over him. Still I'd take someone who's been with the system a month over someone who's only been with it 2-3 days. Vinny's been in so many different systems and he's such a vet he might pick it up real quick.

Carr practiced Friday and will now likely start against Arizona. Still I think "Gramps" Testeverde will see his share of snaps. IMHO he's still better than David Carr.

I forget who, but I remember arguing about this just a few months ago. There were posters that were convinced Carr just had bad situations and he was in fact really good. I've felt that Carr is overhyped for awhile now, I just don't see what it is that is supposed to make him such a great QB.

Panthers downgrade QB Carr to questionable after back tightens up

October 13, 2007

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Carolina Panthers quarterback David Carr was downgraded to questionable for Sunday's game against Arizona after his sore back stiffened on the team's cross country flight.

Carr had been listed as probable after practicing Friday, but he experienced pain on the flight later that night. He was downgraded before the team's afternoon walkthrough Saturday afternoon. Carr is expected to warm up Sunday morning to determine if he'll play.

If he can't go, coach John Fox will have to decide between 43-year-old Vinny Testaverde or undrafted rookie Matt Moore.

Testaverde was signed Wednesday and has been scrambling to learn the offense and his new teammates. Moore was signed last month after being cut by Dallas, and acknowledged he's been a bit overwhelmed working with the first team in practice.

Carr had replaced Jake Delhomme, who will undergo season-ending elbow surgery.
