As a white man from the suburbs I ask, is it not universally acknowledged that Biggie is the best rapper of all time?

Not at all

Most people will say Pac, second most popular response usually is Nas or Biggie.

people trying to be cool who don't really know rap will pretend Jay Z or Kanye

the hipster response is MF Doom

Biggie was a pop star as well.

there were 2 different Biggies......"Ready to Die" biggie was a hungry B-Boy rhyming about the street corner hustle and trying to make it......."Life after Death" Biggie was a freaking Mafia Don.......

needless to say ill take "Ready to Die" era all day

agreed although Biggie's best song is Kick in the door from LAD.

that's a top 5 DJ Premier beat ever...kinda wish Jeru got it instead.

Pac's top 5. Considering how amazing Illmatic has held up over time I don't think it's any question that Nas gets that title. 3 Stacks, GZA and Rae will continue to be overlooked in this discussion, and tbh Killer Mike deserves a mention with the work he has been churning out over the past 3-4 years.

Redman is up there too

Muddy Waters part 2 is gonna be sick! Marley Marl beats!

Redman is definitely an all-time great. No question. That quasi-comedy subgenre that he invented has had a much bigger legacy than people give him credit for. Action Bronson doesn't exist without Redman paving the way.

Not at all. If you are talking about who could formulate narratives the best, sure, Big probably takes that title. But hip hop is like any other genre, there are different styles and techniques. As incredible as he was, even if Biggie had been able to mature and hone his craft I doubt his wordplay would have ever been as strong as Rakim's or Em's. Hell, if you are looking for who has the best overall catalogue, you might have to actually give that title to Ghostface, but the problem is his best work has largely been entire albums of non-sequiturs. I don't know how you're supposed to compare a guy like that to Tupac or Big Pun.

i don't know if Ghostface is even top 3 in the WU

GZA #1 for sure

Meth second

Rae/ODB/Ghost all got valid points for 3rd

GZA peaked a very long time ago. He put out the single best album of any of them but he really hasn't put out any quality work since the 90s. Rae is Ghost's only match in the group at this point. And Ghost's body of work as a solo artist beats any of them into th ground. The dude has dropped like 4 classics and been the co-star on Rae's 2 classics as well. INS however has had a sneaky good run. Czarface was one of the best albums of 2013.

I know you're still upset because Pac owned everyone with Hit Em Up but it's been 18 years dude, you NYC rap stans need to get over it

One of the most overrated diss songs of all time, dude was mad, nothing more.

It's Rakim. He was the bridge between the true old school and the golden age of rap. His slower, methodical, more lyrical style was a major influence over all the other greats mentioned here, like Biggie, Nas, the Wu. Paid in Full is one of the most important and seminal works in hip hop.
