Can you believe this? "Munchak: Jets hits on Locker unnecessary"

Jake Locker’s injury on Sunday came about due to a pair of hits on one play.

New York Jets defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson smashed his helmet into Locker’s upper torso after Locker had released a pass, and as Locker fell toward the turf, linebacker Quinton Coples leaned in and gave Locker another shot. Neither player was penalized on the play.

On Monday, Titans coach Mike Munchak called both hits “unnecessary” and said he spoke to the NFL about them.

“The first one, (Wilkerson) dropped his helmet into him and unloaded on him,” Munchak said. “You’re supposed to pull back on him when you’re late. He didn’t. The second one was totally unnecessary.”

Munchak described his conversations with the league as emotional.

“Football is football and guys are going to get hurt,” Munchak said. “But you’re hoping you can keep from avoiding things that maybe shouldn’t have happened. That’s emotional because we lost someone we feel is a big part of this team and this offense, and that makes it hard.”

Munchak, how dare you, was the vicious hit to Hill necessary to you? It was probably by a bounty put up by Gregg Williams to take out our deep ball.  What go around come around.

Frankly, of all the plays that should have had yellow flags flying, both injury inducing hits (Locker, Hill) should have qualified.

The pansy, holding calls and shifting calls that had no effect on the play's outcome were ridiculous.

The hit on Locker was unnecessary. I seen the replay and it even seemed like Wilkerson decided to put a bit more juice on it once the ball was released, probably due to frustration. The hit on Hill was also unnecessary mind you.

as the announcers pointed out in a rare moment of lucidity,

this is a game neither team can feel happy about. I'll go one further and say even tho they won 38-13 the Titans probably feel worse this Monday than the Jets.

I don't blame the Titans coaches or fans for complaining about the vicious mo wilk/coples sandwich that likely ended Jake Locker's season.

i remember making similar comments about when vinny was ate by the turf monsters in 99. S--t happens.

Munchak questions Jets on Locker play

Rex Ryan called it a clean hit. His counterpart, Mike Munchak, didn't think there was anything clean about it.

The Tennessee Titans' coach lost his quarterback, Jake Locker, with a hip injury Sunday when he was slammed by New York Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson and linebacker Quinton Coples on the same play. He's expected to miss four to eight weeks, according to ESPN Insider Adam Schefter.

"The first one, (Wilkerson) dropped his helmet into him and unloaded on him," Munchak told reporters Monday in Nashville. "You're supposed to pull back on him when you're late. He didn't. The second one was totally unnecessary."

It'll be up to the league office to decide if fines are warranted. Wilkerson said after the game that the referee told him on the field that his was a legal hit. Ryan backed that up Monday, saying Wilkerson did not do anything illegal. He was not asked about Coples' role in the play and Coples was not available to comment.

ESPN.com Titans team reporter Paul Kuharsky provides a detailed description of the play, opining that Wilkerson's hit was legal but that Coples crossed the line. No argument here on that assessment.

wilkerson kinda lowered his head and was a bit late

idk what coples did tho

He covered his junk and leaned into him.

What's the phrase, "take a swipe at one of ours...."?

I'm not saying it was encouraged by Rex Ryan, or that I'm condoning head-hunters, but the Hill hit rattled our entire game plan, and shell-shocked the sh*t out of Geno; he was completely skiddish the entire game.  If the Hill hit was inspired by Greg (don't say anything this time) Williams, then it worked magnificently for the dirty Titans. Sometimes "your own" medicine is the worst tasting one.

How many Jets players have been on the end of a brutal hit this season?  Hill took a questionable shot in that very same game. Take off the skirts boys this is football. I surely do miss the kick returns it has changed the face of the game.

yeah the kick offs are stupid. they shoudl just autoimatically start drives at the 20 at this point or move the kickoff back to the 30 and let returns actually happen again

especially that we have no k.o. returners - no justin miller-leon washington-brad smith-westhoff ... yeah, we're better off starting from the 20 and not having Gates start us from the 15.

Gates is a bum in ever aspect of the game ... sad part is he was a giant bright spot in training camp.

The hit on Hill happened post possession so it was a block and NOT a hit on a defenseless WR. The hits on Locker were not flagged so what are we talking about it for? Sanchez took a good number of hits that were never flagged even though very late and very brutal. So Mike Munchak, boo hoo hoo.

It doesn't matter if he was a defenseless receiver or not, it was still a blatant personal foul, call it leading with the helmet or a blow to the head, whichever you prefer, they're both illegal.

We're splitting hairs here but Verner had not secured possession before Hill already had his chest caved into with a face mask.  Verner had barely gotten one foot down before Griffin had already started his launch. Griffin was going to hit Hill no matter what.

Considering how useless Gates has been as a WR, we might as well bring back McKnight and just let him return kicks.  It was nice starting most of our (returned KO) drives at or near our own 30 instead of taking one of them out to the 28 and the rest on our own 15-18.
