Dog got hit by a car Question

So on Monday night my wife had her friend and her kids over. First, the a$$hole left the door open on the way out and the dog got out. They/we/nobody knew the dog got out until like 15 mins later when we were looking for it. (Supposedly my wife closed the door when she saw they left it open and just thought the dog was in the back yard at first.) Nope, dog's gone. So then the dumb bitch friend gets in her SUV to help us look for the dog and then HITS the ******* dog while looking for it driving around.

So the dog's front left leg is in really bad condition. 4 days later It still just hangs there. We have to pick him up to take him outside, he just hobbles around. This looks like permanent nerve damage but supposedly sometimes dogs can get it back 6 weeks later. Just not sure what to do with this dog. Anyone got any stories similar?

umm, take to vet and ask a trained professional instead of a bunch of idiots on the interwebs?

sorry to hear about your dog, but bring it to a vet man

Took it to the vet the night it got hit. Spent the whole freaking night there. Xrays were negative. You'd be amazed. They were like, well... it will take a few weeks before you can tell if we have to amputate the arm or not.  I was wondering if this happened to anyone else on the board.

Dude ur dogs leg is broken. It's been untreated for 4 days? This is a joke, right?

You'd like to think they'd have more answers. Nothing broken. Dog probably caught, strained or pulled left front arm when he got hit. All they could say was, he most likely has nerve damage 50/50 it ever comes back, have to wait a few weeks to see, may need to amputate arm. We have to take him in weekly starting next week for a month. But it's thursday and he's no better. I've had to sleep on the couch bc he can't walk or anything. I have to pick him up and carry him outside to go to the bathroom if I think he has to go. Had to take off work but can't take off forever for the dog. I dunno. Figured I'd ask.

only story I have is a black lab ran out in front of my truck 20 years ago, it was at night, and I only saw him for a split second.  sent the poor guy FLYING like 30 feet.  I was going around 45, hit the brakes hard, probably still going 30 when I hit him.  He is motionless, but breathing. he's in shock. he's on the side of a very busy road.

so now I have to find the owner.  I wrap him in  blanket, and start to wonder which door to knock on (weird flashbacks to a clockwork orange pop into my head)

before I can go anywhere, a car stops.  young girls yells out "nice job a-hole" and drives off.

I knock on a few doors, no leads.  nobody knows the dog.

I go back to comfort the dog, try to give it water, another car stops.  a middle aged woman tells me "you have to put it down, I have a gun in my trunk"

ummm, no.  That's the owners decision.

after awhile, I'm now debating taking the dog to the animal hospital myself, or calling the cops, luckily we get word the owner is out of town, but a neighbor will take the dog to the hosp.  we exchange numbers

2 weeks later I visit the dog, and he's got scrapes, but he's ok.  that was one tough lab

Thank Thai. We took him in on Wed and the vet said there's hope the leg comes back bc he can feel the pinches in his foot. Didn't like it. But it's now almost two week and he still isn't really using the leg. He has gotten a million times better at using just the three. Even though I take him down the back porch steps he now easily makes his way back up. Isn't in as much pain it seems. He's gotten good at the hobble around.

So the vet said you wait 6 weeks with these things. But eventually if he doesn't start using the leg again it's probably permanent nerve damage and they amputate it off. So we're just crossing our fingers. Yeah, I ******* hate her friend.

just saw this thread.  Terrible situation and her friend sounds like a real piece of work.  did she even offer to at least help offset the vet costs?  I'd think before all is said and done you'll be thousands in the hole.

I was actually on a 3rd date with a woman I wound up marrying.  going through that really helped us get to know we are both soft hearted animal lovers

the woman who offered to shoot the dog was beyond bizarre.  it he was torn in pieces and really suffering, I would have had a horrible decision to make, but with no obvious wounds and just in shock, no way was I doing that.

Unbelievable.  I know you have to keep the peace at home but there's no way I'd be able to hold my tongue next time that pig came around.  Not saying I'd rage on her but she'd certainly know the dog may never be the same, how much more work you now have to put in to care for the dog, and how much money everything has cost to this point.

The fact that she's offered no money is shocking.  and disgusting.  good grief.

Wow. Did her stupid friends at least offer to cover the medical cost? a$$holes.

It's hard to tell from your description where the damage is. A damage to the front legs can be either damage to the spine from C1 to C5 (upper motor neurons) or C6 to T2 (lower motor neuron). This is something they should have been able to tell apart in the physical and neurological examination. Aka checking deep pain, reflexes and cranial nerves. They should have also done x-rays of the vertebra...Have they?? Cause doing x-rays of just the leg is not sufficient. But since I don't know what their finding were I really can't say which of cases it is.

Neurological injuries are a pain. Neuron cells don't regenerate. Axons, on the other hand, can but it takes a butt load of time. So it depends what got damaged. Since you're describing a lesion only in one leg it sounds probable that it is a lower motor neuron injury.  :/

How old is your dog? What kind?

Poor dog, it's awful that your wife's friend hasn't offered any money to help.

I have my moments.  I'm really good at blaming myself for everything, even when a black dog runs in front of your truck at night, lol

It's easy for me to armchair quarterback but the bitch would never be allowed back in my house again.

I know. Even my wife said it's put a big damper on their relationship. I know it was an accident but her lack of remorse pisses me off. I didn't like her to begin w too.

On a very good note, he's doing much better. He's now planting on his paw. Still an enormous limp but he can get around by himself. Up and down the stairs whatnot. Which is huge!

Take the dog to the vet. Have your wife's friend put down.

run her over.

Hess take the dog to a vet that specializes maybe an orthopedic vet .... they do exist just google it . I don't know where you live but there are some good surgical centers here where I live and they may be able to help with a better diagnosis , In the mean time keep the dog crated since moving around too much can easily aggrevate the situation . Did the idiot vet you brought her too give you anything to keep the dog calm or give steroids ? Don't let him climb stairs don't let him run. Sometimes dogs start to feel better and think they can go full blast and wnd up back at square 1

From the sounds of it he should look for a neurology expert. If no bones and no ligaments were affected... there really isn't anything an orthopedic specialist could offer, aside from a referral to a neurology expert.

Obviously vets have some basic knowledge about neurology. It all comes down to how much Hess trusts his vet. If he thinks he/she has a good handle on things then it's not a must, but it certainly can't hurt to get a second opinion. In the end it boils down to the same thing... how much money you're able to spend on it.
