C.J. Spiller - Please for the love of God NO...

Guys like Curtis Martin, Corey Dillion and Lynch were all traded. I think we gave up a 1st rounder and some for Martin. But my point is in order to get a good running back you have to do so by the draft and not FA. Look at all the good and elite backs. They've all gotten paid which makes me wonder what the hell are they talking about when they insist the RB market is declining. Foster, McCoy, Charles, Peterson, Forte, Lynch, Gore and every other corner stone RB got paid during their rookie contracts.

But back to my point, we have to use a second day draft pick on a RB. Your chances on using a pick on a 4th rounder and beyond scream a situation back. As for finding a number one back in FA forget about it. Best case is you find a solid number two.

A 1st and 3rd pick now imagine it wasn't cuddley Cumar but another RB who avg 3.5 ypc and had 14 yds rushing in the AFCCG and in the first game next season fumbles and we lose the QB when he tried to recover it.. He would be crapped on and run out of town..LOL

He's not going to be a bank breaker.

If he's in the $3M/year range ($5-6M guaranteed) I think take a serious look at him. A guy who would touch the ball that much I don't worry whether he's $1M or $4M per for a few years unless he's simply unproductive or a locker room cancer.

Sure it's easy to say just burn a 7th rounder. But if that was such a sure thing then no one would draft a RB before round 7. A 7th round RB has less than a 50/50 chance of making the opening day roster, even for a team with a need at the position. Might as well take Spiller, if he's reasonable in his demands, and use our draft picks on other positions. It's not like we need only 1 thing. Plus it's not like we need him to touch the ball 300-400x either.

Chris Johnson

Chris Johnson just completed the first season in his seven-year NFL career that saw him rush for less than 1,000 yards. Johnson rushed for 663 yards and had a 4.3 yard per carry average. The Jets are changing up the offense, with Chan Gailey in town they are expected to run a spread offense. Which means there is a premium on fast backs who can catch.  He certainly fits that mold, in his six seasons with the Titans Johnson averaged 45 catches and 334 yards receiving per year.

Dom Cosentino breaks down Johnson’s contract on NJ.com:

After he was released by the Titans last April, Johnson signed a deal with the Jets that had a max length of two years and a max value of $8 million. That contract calls for Johnson to earn $3.5 million in base salary next season, but none of that money is guaranteed. He’s also slated to count $5.25 million against next year’s salary cap, though that figure can be reduced to $1.75 million if he were to be released. And the Jets have a deadline of Feb. 16 to
pay out an option bonus of $500,000
that would essentially trigger the second and final year of Johnson’s contract. Which means we ought to know what the Jets’ plans are by that date, at the latest.

That leaves the Jets with an interesting decision. Do they take a gamble on a running back that will be 30 this season, who is coming off the worst year of his career? There has been a lot of speculation that the Jets will look to bring in C.J. Spiller who played under Gailey in Buffalo. He is coming off an injury plagued year but is two years younger than Johnson. Here is what Spiller’s career stats look like:

Bilal Powell would make a nice 3rd down back, but he is an unrestricted free agent and is expected to have interest from several other teams. A common thought with Jets fans is the Jets should look to get younger at running back and pass on both  Tell us what you think?

We have way bigger needs at other positions and will need the entire $40 mil in cap room to salvage the roster from the damage Idzik did. We are looking at 7-8 significant free agents we need to sign not even mentioning qb.

Spiller is not that great . If lynch were available yes but Chris Ivory is better than Spiller.

The last time CJ Spiller was in an offense ran by Chan Gailey, he had 1,700 yards from scrimmage and 8 TDs while averaging 6 yards per carry.

And, by the way, he was quite popular in fantasy at that time.

So why can't Chris Ivory put up those numbers? He impressed me as a receiver out of the backfield last season. Spiller I'd be ok at a modest 1-2 year deal similar to what Chris Johnson but if we sign him to a big contract it's a sign we brought in another dud regime

That's the entire point. He'll be available for something similar to what Chris Johnson signed for.

CJ costs $5 million against the cap if we keep him. Cut him. Sign Spiller for half that... and get this - PAIR him with Ivory.

MIND.

BLOWN.

BOOM.

Someone please name me one FA RB who have every done sh** for their new team and lived up to their contract? Bring in a 20 years old rook (chess piece) that you can target on day two in that draft instead of signing these vet pawn 1 dimensional RB. Duke Johnson, RB out of Nebrask and Boise would be a great second day selection.

Curtis Martin.

I do not understand people who say he has trouble staying on the field.  He broke a collarbone last year.  For the four years prior to that, he played 16 twice, 15 and 14, according to the stats I saw.  I think he might wind up being just as productive as Harvin, who has real concerns with playing time.  And for a lot less.  Harvin is not a true wideout.  We should draft one of those.
