Too bad, I had high hopes for Petty, guess stats in College do not translate to the NFL, maybe there is hope for the Hack

Well I'm not exactly suggesting it's the end of the road for him. It's moreso the fact that Geno has the NFL in-game experience and has looked better than Petty so for one more year he's the most suitable backup.  It just makes the most sense.  They get their value from Geno's final year by having a suitable backup, Petty gets to from the shadows some more, and the Jets don't have to carry 4 QB's.  I also think it's safe to say that the Jets want Hack to be the guy on the sidelines with Fitz and Geno this year so Petty always had that working against him.

Personally, I believe Petty have a mysterious "injury" during preseason and he will go on IR.

That is a really good point. They could sell him on the possibility of growing and coming back as the # 2 eventually behind Hackenburg.

Don't you think that any viable backup has to have game day experience. In 2013 we had a rookie starter and a backup, Matt Simms who had no starts. So I don't see him being under consideration to be Hack's backup next year or 2018. It's really a competition between Hack and Petty to be our future starter. Imo they probably don't carry 4 Qbs this year. They'll cut Petty and he probably won't be picked up by another team. And they'll PS him. It's possible he could end up being 3rd string next year.

Yes, that is why I said they would sell him on it in order to get him take go on I.R.  I don't see any scenario where Petty is the # 2 next year myself.

yup, Pats have used this 'oops i have a quad distended right fibiscus tendon, need to sit out a year' (PROTECTED FROM OTHER TEAMS)

Nothing wrong with that. Use the rules to the best of your team's ability. That's the beauty of clever management, learn the loopholes in the system and play accordingly. B)

Petty should have a shoulder strain that permits him to be IRed for 2016. The kid needs two redshirt years just to keep his head above water; he's now able to read defensive Madden coverages, really? He has no business on the field except for preseason, unless you want another shell-shocked arm on our QB depth chart.

Petty could go on the IR but does the team really think he's in their long range plans. Enough to pay him full salary. If they cut him and he goes to the PS it's a lot cheaper for the team. They could always expose him to waivers and then pull him back if a team makes a claim.

Agree, the kid i knew didnt really have a choice. he was called to the trainers room and told he was being flown to MS to see a specialist while totally healthy.

if fitz has another good year they could roll with geno instead of petty, or go with hack as the #2 and find another qb to groom for the pipeline.

Bryce Petty's salary is $525K this year. Money will have absolutely nothing to do with their decision regarding him.

Well maybe you're right. But wouldn't PS money be a lot cheaper if they think he's expendable.

Yep. Agree with someone else saying they could IR him, though. Really that decision is his: does he think he will make $525K in 2016 if he hits free agency some 2-4 weeks before final cutdowns? It's possible, but doubtful. Possible in that, some other team(s) may have a more flexible #3 QB roster spot than the Jets (clearly he's that far behind Geno, and Hackenberg has a 0% chance of getting cut).

As of today, (absent getting IR'd after a phantom shoulder injury) it seems the question for the Jets is whether or not he's worth keeping as a #4 QB, not whether he's worth keeping as the #2 QB.

Good stuff about Marshall Jr., Jenkins and Milliner.  But Petty definitely takes the cake for top dog turd.  If he doesn't improve this week, just cut him and let Hack get the extra reps.

At least 3 INTs in 4 practices?  Wow!  Maybe Petty saw Fitz get paid after week 17 and is trying to be like him now?

FALLERS

Bryce Petty, quarterback: He has thrown at least three interceptions in four practices, including a horrible throw on Sunday. Petty still is the No. 3, ahead of Christian Hackenberg on the depth chart, but that could change. Hackenberg throws a better ball than Petty, but he's inconsistent from down to down. That's what you expect from a rookie. Petty doesn't have that alibi. He needs a respectable showing to secure a roster spot.

My guess they are hoping he becomes the #2 QB when Geno and Fitz are no longer on the team. I think he is pretty cheap right now.

It's not impossible but I'd think they would prefer a backup Qb with game day experience and some success. A guy like Hoyer or McCown esp if Hack is the starter. It's not all Petty's fault. The only way to really evaluate a Qb is on game day and he hasn't even taken a snap let alone a start. It's not easy getting a chance. Which is why I don't agree with Geno's fans when they say he isn't getting a fair shot. 29 starts is a great opportunity and it's up to the player even if there are circumstances like being on a bad team to show what they can do. Most Qbs including guys with great college resumes don't get this number of starts esp if they have those results.

No.  The Jets are hoping that Petty and/or Hackenberg develop into a good starter.  They knew Petty was a multi-year project when they drafted him and they're letting Geno walk next year.  Petty isn't go anywhere right now.

Sorry, I was suggesting the floor of their hopes was a good backup QB; so, why cut the guy now, if that is what he will become. I wonder now that Hack is there, where they think Petty will end up.
