The hidden elephant in the draft room

The Eagles have hired a bevy of Ivy nerds to head up their analytics team to supplement the old school scouting dept. Berry was just poached and Tepper just recently took one to Carolina. Their football ops staff is just bigger and a bit more diverse in their duties. Roseman has a lot of pull and Lurie wants to win. Savage and Hogan while probably solid old school scouts, are eye test guys.

the links you provided don’t say all of this

Alright. The Eagles are ahead of the Jets, in my opinion. Ownership, front office, etc...are more dedicated to putting a winning product on the field. There’s enough evidence via google that shows it. I hope you’re right though.

Not uncommon that a new GM does his first draft with the old scouts.

At the time JD was hired most of the established scouts would have been under contract to other teams.  Got a good guy in Savage.

Some of the things that JD got when he signed was a 6 year contract (very long for a first time GM) and increased money in his scouting department.  I'm sure there will be changes in the area scouts right after the draft.

Its already been talked about all the changes that JD made with the front office and scouting.

SAR already outlined in his post all the personnel changes that were made in the FO but the thing no one has mentioned yet is the nugget that JD gave recently in interviews at the end of the season.  When he came into the position he did a comprehensive review of the system for grading and ranking draft prospects the scouts were using and threw that out.  He then installed the system that was used for years by Newsome in Balt and that a good portion of the NFL already uses (Balt, Philly, Ind. ect). So while we may have many of the same scouts, they will be evaluating players based on a new set of criteria and a new weighting system.  Then they will be reporting these finding isn a new comprehensive way that will make the identification of talent process hopefully more successful.  If there are scouts not pulling their weight or doing a terrible job in their evaluations, then JD will most likely address them this offseason as this will be the first time he can evaluate them properly at their job.

Isn't that the opposite?

Scout contracts usually start/end in the mid-spring (after the draft is over) not right after the prior season is over, for obvious reasons. That's the reason a new GM keeps the old scouts around for the first draft, because that first draft is 4 months after the new GM is hired and other scouts are still under contract with their old teams.

May might have been prime time to overhaul the scouts if he wanted to, though it's also possible he was just a few weeks late (that scouts were re-upped in early May, just before Douglas was hired). In that case I can hardly fault him for not hiring someone under contract with another team, and he'd have to wait 11+ months to shuffle his scouting group around.

Why is the word "hidden" in the title?  It's not needed.  Just say "The Elephant in the Room".

Annoying.

Also who hides an elephant...in a room, no less.

Glad someone else said it. Because I'm a miserable prick.

Isn't the elephant in the draft room supposed to be our scouting department that has been on board since Maccagnan, or before?  Maybe they are hiding.  Maybe that is how they keep their jobs.
