Wow.  Jamarcus sure has made quite the dumpster fire of a life since getting his # 1 pick money…

Former No. 1 pick JaMarcus Russell fired as coach, faces lawsuit

Former No. 1 NFL draft pick JaMarcus Russell was fired as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, Williamson High School in Mobile, Alabama, and is facing a lawsuit accusing him of taking a $74,000 check meant as a donation to the school.

"JaMarcus Russell was relieved of his volunteer coaching duties at Williamson High School during the fall of last year," Mobile County Public School officials told WKRG Sports.

A local business owner, Chris Knowles, wrote the $74,000 check, saying Russell approached him about a donation to help the Williamson football team purchase weight room equipment. The school allegedly never received the check, and Russell reportedly deposited it in a credit union and promptly withdrew $55,000 of it.

In addition to being fired as a coach, Russell is also not allowed to be on the school's campus, according to a statement from Mobile County Public School officials. Russell attended an event for the football team this week, but was told he was not welcome.

"Earlier this week, it was reiterated to Mr. Russell that he is not permitted to be around the football program or on school campus," the school district said in a statement to WKRG.

Russell, 38, was a star quarterback at Williamson before going to college at LSU, where he threw for 6,625 yards and 52 touchdowns in three years before turning pro.

Russell was the first pick in the 2007 NFL draft and started 25 games for the Raiders over three seasons. He ended his NFL career with a 52.1% completion rate, 18 touchdowns and 23 interceptions and is regarded as perhaps the biggest NFL draft bust.

He earned more than $36.4 million in salary and bonuses during his NFL career.

36 million is more than 90% of humans make in their lifetime and he had to steal 75,000 ?

Does he strike you as a guy who saved and/or wisely invested any of that money?

There’s a reason SI once reported that 78 % of NFL players have financial problems 2 years after leaving the league.  And Russell hasn’t played a down in 15 years…

well the more you make the more you spend. im sure with that 1st years salary he bought over a million dollar house vs a 800k house. brought a brand new car up front for 80k instead of financing it.

i think with guys like Russell who are top picks in the draft they think they are good and that 1st contract is the 1st of a few. and he just played 3 years. he couldnt even stick as a backup anywhere.

Strange that you listed two smart decisions there.  His million dollar house would probably have skyrocketed in value and not paying finance fees on a new car seems intelligent enough.  Wasn't his issue with the grape drank?

The entertainment industry is a poison to society.  It creates a large portion of the country’s millionaires.  I cannot think of worse professions than athletes, actors & singers being rewarded with millions of dollars.  The world would be a better place if that amount of money was received by doctors, engineers, farmers, laborers, artists, etc. - people who actually benefit society.

It’s not good when your richest people are people who played a children’s ball game for a decade.

kinda confused. how do you steal 74k and not be prosecuted?

No idea.  He’s only facing a civil case rather than criminal.  Maybe the school didn’t want to press criminal charges on a famous alum who perhaps made the school a fair amount of money in other ways?

It’s also pointless to press charges for embezzlement.  They might be able to get restitution but probably not.  If he gets a judgment against him in civil court they can go after his assets to try to get money back Jamarcus probably still has a couple nice sports cars that can be repossessed and who knows maybe he got his head out of his rear once and actually made a good investment once like buying a house
