MY WISH LIST FOR THE 2007 SEASON

Sperm Edwards

Recommended Posts

1. Bench Chad.

Start Clemens, pick up someone else if he's that bad, but do something. I'm sick of the fear-of-worse. I'm sick of having little to no shot at overcoming a 2-TD deficit. I'm sick of seeing too many trick plays & WR screens & check-downs b/c our QB can't throw it even moderately deep without 10 yards of separation in single-coverage between the WR & the CB. I'm sick of our receivers having to worry about getting their clocks cleaned on every pass b/c of the floaters.

Basically I'm sick of usually-ok-to-pretty-good from Mr. Regular-Season.

Forget all the efficiency stats & such. And even the grit & heart & soul & hard work & smarts & other intangibles. Those things are GREAT if you've got them in someone who's physically gifted. Otherwise they just serve to mask deficiencies elsewhere & the overall product is still an average one.

He just doesn't put up enough points & is too easy to gameplan against by the types of good defenses that we'll have to beat to win a superbowl.

2. Rookies need to add some bulk.

Leon & D'Brick I'm looking in your general directions. If Leon can't, then we need another option; someone with some power who's not slower than Vinny.

3. Get a stud CB.

Dyson was excellent this year, but he other side was lacking big-time. Whatever one's opinion of Clements or Samuel, either one is a HUGE upgrade over what we've got. Worth the money for such a big hole. Don't look at the total passing yards or stats - look with your eyes at the ease with which 3rd-downs seem to be converted in big situations.

4. Kickoffs.

As amazing as Nugent has been on his FG's, he's been equally hideous on KO's. You don't just drop a money FG kicker, which he's turning into. But we've got 3 options: he either fixes this problem himself, Graham learns to do it, or we have to use an active roster spot every week for a KO specialist. You simply can't spot the opposition that many yards to start a drive.

5. ILB/OLB

I'm through saying Vilma's mediocre in this scheme. He's outright below average for a 3-4 ILB. He's puny. He gets blown out of the play by mediocre OG's. He makes tackles, but they're too often after the first-down marker. He still tries to run around blockers b/c he himself knows he's too small to engage them.

Now, he could put on an extra 10-15 lbs, but then he'd be slow. Besides, we have better options. Trade him to a 4-3 team DESPERATE for a durable MLB who can make plays (Carolina, etc). Don't knock his trade value - 115 tackles this year and his cap # is around $1M/yr for 2 years to anyone who acquires him. We should get a mid-first rounder at a minimum. We took him at #12 not knowing (for sure) if he'd be a bust. Surely someone would give up the same now that he's everything we thought he would be (& was even a pro-bowler by his 2nd season).

Put Hobson inside. He's MUCH better against the run than Vilma & doesn't get dragged by runners until help arrives nearly as much. Get a FA OLB (A.Thomas, etc) with the speed to get to the QB better than Hobson who really doesn't have real QB-pressure speed.

6. DL

Ellis is going nowhere because of his contract.

DRob is going nowhere for 2007 and not staying in 2008 for the same reason.

That being said, try to groom someone more ideally suited for NT. Maybe it's one of our two IR guys; maybe it's a FA; maybe it's a surprise draftee.

And DE goes without saying. My ideal is if we can snag Carriker in round 2. Otherwise find some other option b/c KVO/BH are lousy.

7. FB

Askew is no blocker. No detail is needed here. Draft one; find one in FA; trade for one; see if that Pociask kid is any good. Just anything other than what we've got.

8. Right side of the OL

Clemens & Moore were pretty good at times. Basically they're great backups. Neither is a mauler blocker for the run. Neither is a particularly good pass-blocker.

Moore is already locked up long-term at a great contract for the team. He goes nowhere. Clement should be retained if we can get him for backup money.

Find a real OG in FA to start for '07. There are a few outstanding ones available. Draft one to replace Kendall in '08 or so. RT - depends on what's available to us in FA or the draft. I wouldn't cry if we took Levi or Blaylock in round one, even if it's unglamorous again.

9. TE

I'd like an upgrade over Baker, but I consider all of the above to be more important. If a Tony Gonzalez becomes available, then grab him if the price is not insane. Or if a highly-touted rookie prospect falls a round or two later than expected. Baker is so-so & in the presence of other improvements I think we can get by with so-so at this position. Or maybe a FA like Dan Graham or Eric Johnson (though he hasn't been the most reliable injury-wise). Cap room is something we definitely have & TE's aren't usually that expensive so we can go FA here.

I`m with you on trading Vilma if we do i would like to look at Patrick Willis out of Ole Miss, or is he and Vilma to similar?

We cant lose Vilma he is the brains of the defense... it would be a HUGE step back to lose that

Given your cap room I can't see why you wouldn't go get Samuel, unless his price goes truly sky-high.

But even at $6 mil per year or some such.... you have an awful lot of room, the market is thin, and he and Mangini know each other real well. He'd be worth it. He's not a true #1 but Mangini will know how to use him, and on an otherwise good defense he can play that #1 role quite well, as seen this year.

When you sign Samuel it may look like overpaying, but for once it won't be a mistake.

It's tough getting rid of your offensive and defensive leaders. I think that's going to be a difficult decision for Mangini with Chad and Vilma. I'll fully support any decision he makes, but it's tricky. Getting rid of the leaders of the team can have really bad results if the players left on the team don't buy into the change. If he does make that decision, it will probably be the hardest decision he'll have to make as coach.

Also, if Vilma puts on 10-15 pounds, it shouldn't slow him down that much I think. It's not like he's roaming sideline to sideline anymore. A slight dropoff shouldn't be too bad. And I'm not sure if size is his problem as much as strength is. He's just never struck me as a really powerful player.

As for adding bulk on the OL & DL, that's a given. We couldn't move their DL, and our DL was getting pushed around by their OL. We lost both battles in the trenches today and it wasn't even close.

An upgrade at TE is probably lower on priorities though. Everytime they make an effort to include Baker during the game, he has usually delivered. He definitely played pretty well today when given the opportunity.

I think 8 is a huge need, and is a lot easier to fill. I don't want to see Moore and Clement next year.

No kidding, there was nowhere to run today except when we ran some draws and delayed handoffs. The sad part is that they do it with mostly their DL. Our DL gets swallowed up but it's just the opposite when we try to run.

Sperm,

You made no mention of running backs, other than Leon Washington adding bulk. I disagree with this. HE is the nice change-of-pace back, and would compliment Turner from San Diego nicely.

That's right. I'm already on the bandwagon.

Sperm I understand your comments about fear of worse disease with guys like Herm and John Abraham but the difference between them and Chad Pennington is that Chad Pennington actually wins football games for us. All Abe ever did here was collect stats and all Herm Edwards did was talk too much during press conferences.

Would I like to upgrade over Chad? Sure. But I actually want an upgrade and not someone who happens to be a different QB with a different style of play.

I agree with a lot of this. Not all of it though. Chad is the answer. I mean that. There are a lot of problems with this team. Chad is not one of them.

The guys heart was always a known quantity. But he proved he can stay healthy now. He proved he can lead the Jets. What do they need?

1. Chad to have his first offseason of normal rest in years. That alone will do tons for his arm strength.

2. Improve the interior run defense (NT - LB) they can fix this however they want. But this team has to get stronger. They can not line up and just simply stop people.

3. They need a new CB as well to play along side Dyson. Maybe it is Miller, I won't rule that out.

4. RT. I like Moore and RT is the only change I would make on the line.

5. RB. They need a # 1 RB. Leon is awesome. Keep him fresh. Keep him as the 3rd down back. They need a new guy.

Not complaining in any of this. This team made me so damn proud. Even in defeat. Today I am proud to be a Jets fan.

Nice post Max. I don't think we need to go out and make a ton of changes this offseason. Your post is pretty much how I feel. I would also like to add a TE.

Given our past disagreements I was surprised to find that I agreed with so much of your list. Taking your points one by one.

1. I think Clemmons becomes the starter between week 4-6 next season.

2. D'Brick needs to bulk up. Leon is perfect he's just not going to be a 25+ carry per game back.

3. A top of the line CB should be the Jets #1 priority

4. I'm hoping for either an improvement in Nuge's kick off or that Graham can pick it up. I cant see using one of 45 roster spots every week for a kick off guy.

5. Vilma is primed to be traded. As you said, he had a good year leading a playoff team. Plus, he's young, has a reputation, and will still be a cheap pick up for another team. But, Hobson cant take over in the middle. He's just learned to excell on the outside and I'm not sure he has the personality to be the defensive "quarterback". Personally, I think Schlegel was drafted for this purpose (but then my opinion in this area is well known). I think there is a good chance that Vilma is traded, Kassell and Schlegel split time at ILB early and then Schlegel takes over.

6. I really dont think they need a top level guy on the D line. Ellis and DRob have been fine and B Thomas has been a revalation. One more starting quality guy and some depth (which we kind of already have) and I'd be satisfied.

7. I like Askew, but I think Mangini is grooming Stacey Tutt to take over this spot.

8. I would make right side Oline help my #6 priority over D line.

9. I like Baker.

My priority list in order:

1. A top of the line CB

2. A powerfull effective 20 carry a game RB

3. Oline help on the right side.

4. One more effective (doesnt have to be great Dlineman)

5. LB depth other than Chatham.

I am always amused in light of the QB play we have seen the past two days in the WC round by QB's not named Brady and Manning that all our experts want change yet have no name to provide us with.

Like Manning was really better, he had 3 INTs. The overall level of QB play isn't so great, that's why I think a guy like Chad is fine. I mean sure it'd be great to have a Brady or McNabb, but after those two the dropoff is huge. I include Peyton Manning in that dropoff. Palmer makes a ton of mistakes too. ecurb posted a thread up with TD/INT numbers, but for Palmer the fumbles also come into play. I think outside of those two and Brees, the upgrade in QB play wouldn't be so much that it'd be worth making. We are fine with Chad, we have other positions to worry about now. I've been a pretty big critic of Chad, and I just dislike when people refuse to assign him any blame whatsoever, but we have bigger problems than him. We can live with Chad, especially with this FO keeping him at a decent salary. What we can't live with is this run D and the right side of the line. A great RB would also be nice, but I'm not convinced Leon can't be "the guy" with better run blocking. Brick hit the rookie wall and needs some bulk, but that won't be a problem next year. I can all but guarantee Clemens isn't the answer either. I just don't believe that guy can produce more for us.

What I'd like to see this offseason, and I know there will be disagreement, is to get Moss in here. I want the right side of the O-line fixed. I'd love Asante Samuel. I'd love a new DE, and maybe a true NT. We probably need to trade Vilma. QB is pretty far down on my list of concerns. If we can get Portis, I think that'd be huge too. We are not THAT far away, but we clearly are not as talented as the better teams in the AFC, and honestly probably not even as good as the Bears in the NFC.

This is a pretty big turnaround in your thoughts on Chad but I agree with you.

Your post below from the locked thread states it best. You call Chad a top 10 QB ,want an upgrade. That is always my point you just don't wake up and have the ability to upgrade on a top 10 QB.

Here's your post and it's spot on.

I sincerely doubt Clemens would be better than Chad. Chad is probably in the top third of starting NFL QBs, we'd need to upgrade past that, and I don't think Clemens has the goods. We'd just be making a lateral move or getting worse. If we want a new QB, we have to either sign him in FA (can't think of anyone that will be available that we'd want) or somehow draft him. JeMarcus Russell wouldn't be a bad idea to take a risk on. Cutler or VY could have paid dividends for us, especially Cutler since we would probably want an offense with his style. Then again he lost against the Niners, so I dunno.

How many times did the patsys throw the ball down the field today? How many 77 Yard TD's did they have? This idea that we can't win with chad is BS. We can't win because we have no running game and can't stop the run or pressure the passer. The jets need to get a good starting RB along with 2 new guards and a big run blocking RT. they also need to add bulk up front on D and speed outside in a guy like thomas or briggs to be able to get pressure on these QB's. Lack of any sustained pass rush is the reason that POS's like Gafney and Brown hurt the jets today.

I give you a lot of credit as you were a huge critic of Chad's. I honestly think if we fix the run D and run O we'll be fine. It's hard to play with that kind of handicap.

I'm confused.. Mcnabb goes down and gets injured yet the Eagles go 5-1 this year.. Mcnabb got injured in like 2003, yet the Eagles went 5-1 with another backup QB(Feely).

I'll give you Brady, but Mcnabb, while a good QB, can't ever be considered great because the fact is, his teams have gone 5-1 WITHOUT him twice in his career.

It's a bit of a turnaround, but not as much as it seems based on the "board wars." I've said all along Chad isn't an elite QB, but I ranked him a bit lower before than I do now. The level of QB play in the NFL really isn't all that great, guys like Trent Green, Carson Palmer, Tony Romo and Philip Rivers, who get a ton of hype, really, honestly, are not as great as people would like you to believe. Through looking at some numbers, and looking at their play, I've changed my thoughts on CP. I still feel he needs more TDs, and obviously has limits, but, with our current FO managing the team and salary cap, he is not our problem. If we can upgrade, fine, great, let's upgrade, but we are probably better off addressing those other positions instead.

The biggest problem I had with CP was his injury history, he started 16 games this season, so I'm not too worried about that now. I'm going to chalk it up to bad luck (you can call it by its name if you want, Herm Edwards). If he ever gets injured seriously again, I think we really need to move on, but I am keeping my fingers crossed and just hoping that is not a problem we worry about again, and I don't see the point of discussing it for now. If he does get injured, we'd suck and get a top draft pick anyway, so the problem would take care of itself.

I know the defense had problems today, but I still think we need to address a few things on offense. The right side of the line, Brick will improve next year so it will address itself, a legit feature back, and if we can get him cheap, I'd love Randy Moss here but it's not a necessity (I know I'll catch flak for that one). Fortunately, I think the biggest need, the right side of the line and Brick's improvement, will not be difficult/can be considered givens. I know people love Vilma, but I'd trade him for Portis and maybe a draft pick for that other problem, although I'd prefer a more Mangini-guy to be our RB. If we can do those things, and Chad still fails next season, I'll be the first guy to call him out on it, but that isn't the case now, so I'm not going to do that right now.

Well, look at the numbers ecurb had posted up, he has among the lowest INTs per season and highest TDs per season. Last year when McNabb went down the team went into the gutter, this year they had Garcia who isn't exactly terrible in that system (pro bowler on the Niners, who ran the offensive system he is in now as an Eagle). I think McNabb is right up there with Brady. I like watching him play because he can make all the throws, and uses his mobility intelligently (he looks to extend the play to pass, not run like a guy like Vick does). And although the NFC is weak, getting to the NFC Championship game 4 years in a row is a good accomplishment. I hear rumors that he is done now, but that shouldn't take away from what he's done the past few years. I would feel really good with him as my QB in any game. I kind of think that if BB or Mangini was coaching him, he'd probably have a SB by now.

The Jets need to address the Defense.

Chad P is what he is.. He won't win you games and you hope he won't turn the ball over, even though he did that frequently this year.

So the Jets front office needs to build one of the best defenses in the league.. Plain and simple.

As great as Brady is, he's won because of his Defense. He played avg in his first SB, but because of Adam V and that defense, they beat the heavily favored offensive Rams.

The Colts with Manning have always had a great offense, yet they give up 30 points in the playoffs and wind up losing.. Yeah Manning may choke, but without a defense, it's hard to constantly have to score points.

When your defense allows about 14-15 per game over the past 6 years, your offense doesn't have to do as much and the QB does not need to throw 4 TDs to win.

Chad P won't be a guy who throws 4 TDs in a game. For him to win and for this Jets team to win, the defense needs to allow about 14 points per game.

It makes it an entirely different game if you score 20 points and expect to win every time.

Have you actually looked at Peyton's playoff losses? I think I looked them up once, and he usually didn't score more than 17 on average, while the defenses gave up maybe a bit more on average, but not close to 30 points a game. You have to factor in all the turnovers he has as well, giving opposing offenses short fields or letting opposing defenses score. He is far from impressive if you sit down and look at everything. I don't think the Colts defenses have been to blame for Manning's playoff futility.

You also need to be able to run the ball and 3/5 our o line needs to be upgraded along with the RB position.
