By Manish Mehta

The Jets will be cutting its roster down to the mandatory 53 over the next two days (deadline is Saturday at 6pm). Remember that Santonio Holmes, who will be suspended for the first four games, will not count against the 53-man roster until he returns.

Some of these guys could be back on the practice squad if they clear waivers.

We'll try to keep you updated on the cuts as best as possible.

Fullback Jason Davis is the first to get the ax this morning, according to a source. Not a big surprise after Rex Ryan said he'd keep veteran Tony Richardson and rookie John Conner. Davis, who was solid in the offseason, will surely land on his feet on another team.

Wide Receiver Larry Taylor was also cut, according to a source. Taylor, of course, was battling David Clowney for the final WR spot. Although I haven't received official word yet, it appears now that Clowney will make the roster. The coaches believe he can be a solid gunner on special teams with his size and speed. Again, it's not official yet. But all signs point in that direction right now.

Rex Ryan said last night that rookie LB Josh Mauga & S Don Warren weren't going to make the roster. Both had been plagued by concussions in camp and the preseason.

LB Brashton Satele, who was injured for much of camp and preseason, was cut, per a source.

A few more predictable cuts, per sources: LB Tim Knicky, C Robby Felix and safety Emanuel Cook, who had an INT last night, and recently signed safety Keith Fitzhugh also got the ax.

Source tells me that DTs Martin Tevaseu and Ty Steinkuhler are goners too. That makes 11 cuts thus far. Jets need to make 10 more to get down the appropriate number.

I have to believe that the Jets will be watching the waiver wire for special teams/WR help. Tanny always makes a couple bottom of the roster moves after the last round of cuts. None of those guys should feel safe yet.

Whittling Down to 53: Cuts Already Underway

By Bassett on 03. Sep, 2010

With roster cuts due tomorrow, reports are already starting to trickle in about who the Jets are going to remove from their roster to make the 53 man requirement. We’ll keep an eye on Twitter and the reporters blogs today for you and make updates as we hear them here.

CONFIRMED

WR Larry Taylor – The Jets have cut the diminutive WR, losing out for the final WR spot to David Clowney and maybe moreso, Danny Woodhead.

FB Jason Davis – With Conner and Richardson there was just no room for the journeyman Jason Davis.

C Robby Felix – Waived by the Jets, Jenny Vrentas could see him making the practice squad.

S Keith Fitzhugh – Was an UDFA from 2009 who was with the Jets last summer and who the team brought back just a few weeks ago.

LB Tim Knicky – Signed during camp with the Jets. Knicky was a former DE at Stephen F. Austin and might be someone who the Jets revisit at some point.

DB Emmanuel Cook – Like Fitzhugh, he’s another UDFA defensive back from 2009 who got a callback from the Jets. Even with his interception last night, he was unable to secure a roster spot.

LB Brashton Satele – Had some injury setbacks, but thanks to Mike Westhoff, he’s now free to open his “pizza stand” in the Bronx. We wish the flyin’ Hawaiian well.

DL – Ty Steinkuhler – The Jets have been carrying Stein on and off since last year’s UDFA class. This probably means that Kroul is a lock on the initial squad, but that the team might still sift through the waiver wire to see if they can find someone else’s garbage to add to their defensive line rotation.

UNCONFIRMED

DB Donovan Warren –A pickup that was lauded by the Jets as he went undrafted out of Michigan – Warren was unable to contribute much, as a concussion sidelined him during much camp, according to Rex’s postgame presser.

LB Joshua Mauga – The former Nevada player had concussion issues as well, and will not make the final roster, according to Rex’s postgame presser.

I'm glad that Clowney looks like he's going to make it.

Not only does it look like Clowney is going to make it, but there is one spot left for an "unexpected" player. Maybe Reamer? By my count, the only unexpected guys left are CB Jackson & Smith, DE Lamb, WR Foster, OL Tanner, Turkovich & Gay. Out of that bunch, the ones who seem most interesting are Foster, Jackson and maybe one of the O linemen. I'd expect some of those to end up on the practice squad. OTOH, that might be the spot they use for a late waiver wire pick up. Foster is a fairly intriguing player, but I didn't notice him last night, so I'm not sure if he's gotten any run at all. It's possible that the concussion couple end up on the IR or they are PS candidates as well.

If your list of locks are correct, then (until week 5) we can keep 9 of the above, is that right? If that's the case, I'd keep around Laury, Washington, Cummings and Kroul for sure. Not sure about the rest. There's gotta be a better CB than Coleman/Cole, if not on the roster then elsewhere.

Locks (45):

Cumberland, Jeff

Mulligan, Matthew

Are you sure about these two as definitive locks? I just don't see us carrying 4 TE's.

Mehta said yes, and confirmed 100% on Cumberland.. so no, I'm not 100% certain on Mulligan but Mehta said 4 TEs because Cumberland's agent said he's made it.

Jason Davis will be an asset somewhere, Larry Taylor may be too, but Clowney may actually bring more to the table right now.

Good luck to all the cuts.

I liked Davis. Having two young hard hitting FBs would not have been a bad thing. But you have to appreciate what T Rich brings to the squad.....

LisaZimmerman Per a source, as of right now, both David Clowney and Brooks Foster are on the 53-man roster. #Jets

If you could Foster and Clowney we're at 48 (47 when you take Revis away, and 46 when you take Holmes away). For sure, Foster or Clowney go away when Holmes is back. The one who plays specials best wins I bet.

That leaves 7 slots. We have 3 DB, 4 S, 3 DE, 2 DT, 2 FB, 3 RB, 3 specialists (K, P, LS), 6 LB, 8 OL, 3 QB, 4 TE, 4 WR (6 if zimmerman is right). We're going to need 1 or 2 more corners, a DE and DT (can you say WW) and others.
