Bernard Pierce - RB -  Jets

Jets signed RB Bernard Pierce.

Pierce is suspended for the first two weeks of the season, but is eligible to participate in training camp and the preseason. The Jets are already pretty deep at running back with Matt Forte, Bilal Powell, and Khiry Robinson.

As they prepare to open camp, the Jets are finally adding the veteran piece to their offense.

No, not that one.

According to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, the Jets are signing former Ravens and Jaguars running back Bernard Pierce.

Pierce has been suspended the first two games of the regular season, after cutting a plea deal to avoid a DUI conviction. But he’s eligible to participate in training camp and the preseason.

The Jets brought in Matt Forte this offseason to go along with Bilal Powell andKhiry Robinson, so it’s not as if they’re looking for a front-line player, but can now kick the tires on a player with experience.

Pierce only got six carries last year with the Jaguars, but was a solid contributor for the Ravens prior to that.

Could be a depth move and an indication that we're going to have a STABLE of RBs.

As we've seen, RARELY does a RB last through an entire year completely healthy without missing a game.

Pierce is probably better than any other #3 or #4 RB and he won't count against the FINAL 53 man roster come end of TC. So we have a decent veteran waiting in the wings who can come on over in week 3.

-- With injury concerns at running back, the New York Jets are poised to sign veteran Bernard Pierce, a league source confirmed on Wednesday.

Two backups, Zac Stacy and Khiry Robinson, are returning from broken bones. A source told ESPN's Adam Caplan that Stacy will be waived with a failed physical designation because of an fractured ankle that required surgery and there's a good chance Robinson, who broke his leg last season, could begin training camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

Pierce must serve a two-game suspension to start the season because of a DUI arrest in March last year.

Neither Stacy nor Robinson participated in the offseason workouts. Pierce and Robinson will compete for the No. 3 job, behind Matt Forte and Bilal Powell.

Players report to training camp on Wednesday.

Pierce, 25, played last season for the Jacksonville Jaguars after three years with the Baltimore Ravens. He was released by the Ravens after his drunk-driving arrest. He was charged with driving under the influence and speeding, and was cut immediately by the Ravens.

In four seasons, Pierce has rushed for 1,345 yards and five touchdowns. His best year came as a rookie n 2012, when he rushed for a career-high 532 yards. He had no role last year in Jacksonville, where he had only six carries for 11 yards.

Pierce's signing was first reported by the NFL Network.

Strictly a dude to take some snaps during camp and keep Forte and Powell fresh for the regular season.  Robinson is coming off an injury too.

He's camp fodder and has about .5% chance of making the roster unless one of the primary guys gets hurt.

I don't know. He really isn't good.

Granted he's still a very young man (25?), but his last "good" game was the Ravens/Steelers game in Sept 2014. And even that is just "good" by some misleading garbage time run that inflated the numbers but didn't actually help his team in any way.

He stinks. As an extra pair of legs in camp to replace Stacy, who it seems they wanted to dump independent of this signing, I think adding him for the summer is perfectly fine. But in a real game? Yeesh, I don't know. Maybe he would have value over a more dynamic (but less experienced) street FA RB because his experience might make him a better backfield blocker. Then again, he might block for the wrong team mid-play again.

He's a Temple guy, so it's nice to be able to root for some local flavor this time of year.

Also can't be any worse than Stevan Ridley, and especially not worse than Zac Stacy, who just got waived because of a failed physical (see below).

Jets cutting Zac Stacy, amid some injury issues in backfield

Zac StacyAP

The Jets signing Bernard Pierce seemed a bit unusual at first, considering they have pretty good depth at the position.

But they’re not quite as deep as they were earlier this offseason.

According to Adam Caplan of ESPN, the Jets will waive running back Zac Stacy with a failed physical designation.

Stacy had surgery to repair a broken left ankle last November, and apparently wasn’t ready to contribute.

The Jets also have some other injury issues at the position, with Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network adding that Khiry Robinson is expected to start training camp on PUP because of a leg injury.

They still have Matt Forte and Bilal Powell atop their depth chart, but apparently had a short-term need for Pierce. He’s suspended the first two regular season games, but is eligible to participate in training camp and the preseason.

Wierd move.  Pierce sucks.  I guess someone might be injured.

Stacey failed his physical. Pierce is suspended two games and won't take up a roster spot until week 3 if we keep him. Nice roster manipulation as insurance incase of injury to one of our backs.

We get an extended look at him and get him familiar with the offense without it counting against the cap or our roster. Then we can cut him and bring him back any time during the season if we have the need. Not a big deal but smart thinking.

Jets placed RB Khiry Robinson (leg) on the active/PUP list.

Robinson is still working his way back from a broken leg, but should be considered day-to-day. When healthy, Robinson is expected to compete for some goal-line work. The Jets signed RB Bernard Pierce on Wednesday.

Not weird at all. Stacy wasn't fully recovered, and with Robinson also still injured, they needed another camp body at RB.  Pierce is also better on specials than Stacy, and the suspension is actually oddly helpful, since they likely won't need a 4th RB for the first 2 weeks of the season anyway, so they can use Pierce as a shadow roster spot to sneak a player at another position (QB) to the PS after 2 inactive weeks on the 53.  Expect the 53 to have 4QBs and only 3RBs coming out of TC

All in all, swapping Stacy for Pierce makes perfect sense.
