Hackenberg still a non-factor for Jets, who took 'Hack' over Dak ~ ~ ~

. -- Statistically, the New York Jets have the worst quarterback situation in the NFL. You can look it up. Their 68.7 passer rating is more than three points below the 31st team, the Houston Texans. The Jets are in bad shape, desperate for someone -- anyone -- to elevate the position. Here's the troubling part: They have a second-round pick sitting on the bench, and he can't even get into the game-plan conversation, much less an actual game.

Christian Hackenberg wasn't good enough to be the backup on Sunday even though he and Bryce Petty were the only two healthy quarterbacks on the roster. The Jets preferred a banged-up Ryan Fitzpatrick (sprained knee) over Hackenberg as the No. 2 -- and it wasn't a tough decision.Meanwhile, Dak Prescott -- drafted 84 spots after Hackenberg -- is having a season for the ages for the Dallas Cowboys. Prescott is a potential MVP; Hackenberg is a DNP.

It's not a good look for Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan, whose draft-day reach for Hackenberg becomes more pronounced by the week.On Monday, coach Todd Bowles quickly dismissed a question about whether Hackenberg is a consideration for the current starting job -- hardly a surprise. Asked if Hackenberg could see action down the road, Bowles said, "Too early to tell, but we'll see."

Unlike Petty, whom they immediately identified as a one-year project (minimum), the Jets didn't categorize Hackenberg after the draft. They left it open-ended, waiting to see him perform before casting him in a role. It wasn't until the end of the preseason, after watching him struggle mightily, that Bowles called it a "redshirt year" for the former Penn State passer.Hackenberg was a connect-the-dots pick for Maccagnan, meaning this: Hackenberg has dots (strong arm, ideal size, work ethic, etc.), but they never came together at Penn State. As one NFC scout said this week, "He didn't have a good college career. Why would it be different in the NFL?" Maccagnan is hoping that, with patience and proper development, the dots will be connected.

"He's getting his reads down," said Bowles, describing Hackenberg in practice (closed to the media). "He's seeing a lot of different pressures. He handles himself pretty good in practice."

It might be second-guessing to criticize Maccagnan for not drafting Prescott -- 30 other teams passed, too -- but some people remember stuff like that. Important people.

At the NFL owners' meetings last spring, Woody Johnson lamented how one of his previous regimes missed Russell Wilson in the 2012 draft. No one on draft day was critical of the Jets for passing on the undersized quarterback, who lasted until the third round, but it obviously left a scar."We could've drafted Russell Wilson in the second round. ... Great player," Johnson said. "We’ve had shots at players, but we didn't take those. Hopefully, we're getting better at evaluating talent, particularly at quarterback."

Sure, in hindsight Prescott would have been among the top two draft picks. Every team passed on him four times and many, including us, picked up QBs who have done less for their team--including top pick Goff and late first rounder Lynch. If you want to specifically criticize our front office for not taking Prescott then you either need to explain how we are any different from every other team.

Prescott was handed a throwback Oline, and a fantastic running back. If anyone thinks he would be doing this on the Jets under Gailey they are delusional.

Agree on that note. Premium Veteran OLine with a STRONG pounding RB who can take it to the house makes most QBs, even ROOKIES, look pretty damn good - see the 2009 NY Jets as the prior example. Anyone lambasting the Jets for not selecting Dak is a moron because Dak would not be as successful here as he currently is in Dallas due OUR TEAM's lack of a strong running game able to run behind our OLine.

Prescott would have been an AMAZING Jets QB if it were 2009 and NOT 2016.

Hit the nail on the head on this one. I 100% agree. Furthermore, we don't really know what Hack will do once he gets his opportunity OR if Dak will win anything for Dallas or even continue his good play next season. Its very early.

The Prescott pick will be brought up as it should at times because it is the GMs job to find these guys but in most cases it can be set aside, that does not make the Hackenburg any less horrific.  A guy who was not that great at penn state, even in his glorious 1st year 20 ts and 10 ints?  Endorsed by a highly suspect QB 'guru' in Obrien, trending downwards since his 1st year in college.  On top of all of this is a 2nd round friggin pick.

Just an awful pick and our gm who i generally like gets this one stapled to his forehead.

Bill O'Brien probably influenced the pick

Jets' Mike Maccagnan named NFL Executive of the Year by PFWA

Another example of jumping to conclusions with no factual basis just pure conjecture. I love how Hack is already written-off as a "bad QB"](*,):

Jets coach Todd Bowles was noncommittal when asked if Christian Hackenberg will see the field this season.

"Too early to tell," said Bowles. "But we'll see." It speaks volumes that an injured Ryan Fitzpatrick backed up Bryce Petty on Sunday instead of Hackenberg, who is perfectly healthy. The Jets are in a no-win situation with three bad quarterbacks on the roster. Hackenberg never had a realistic chance to pan out. It will be either Petty or Fitzpatrick under center when the Jets face New England coming off their bye week.

BIG DEAL what HOW does that correspond to on the field WINNING GAMES?????????????

It's really TOO easy with you.

  1. Get your grammar straight. It's "HOW" not what.
  2. Mac's moves got him that recognition because he made trades and draft picks that elevated a 4 win team in 2014 to a 10 win team (only our 11th in a 57 year history) in 2015. WE FINALLY had a top 10 offense in what seems like DECADES!
  3. Most here would agree that the CS has not optimally utilized the talent on this team - WHY DO WE KNOW THIS? BECAUSE WE SAW who was on this team from 2011-2014 under the Tanny/Idzik eras.

LOL "spelled correctly"  in 2015 the NY Jets had the easiest schedule in the NFL and only beat 2 teams with winning records.

Mike Maccagnan hasnt won anything in the NFL

Do you understand or are you pacified with meaningless wins and awards that amount to nothing.

You didn't misspell What, you USED THE WRONG WORD, it should have been HOW.

1. Mac didn't coach the team, he acquired the players that led to a winning season, he has NOTHING to do with choosing the opponents and that has no bearing on HIS performance for OFF-SEASON transactions.

2. MacCagnan arrived on a 4-12 team that was bereft of identity and had NO OFFENSIVE PLAYER production asides from Chris Ivory who was wearing out his treads.

3. I understand you're an impatient and bellyaching malcontent who throws stones and doesn't have the mental, let alone grammatical when writing on an internet forum, capacity to form an opinion that doesn't come across as whiney ignorant drivel from a jaded geriatric fan that has contributed to the league-wide negative perception of Jets fans and maintaining the surly SOJ misery that will hopefully fade away with the passage of time.

I'm pacified by the fact IT IS A GAME and to CREATE A WINNING CULTURE you need to keep wining, MEANINGLESS or NOT. I USED to be of the same loser mentality to TANK and aspire for a better 1st round pick when I was 14, but I grew up. Losers root for losing. Winners want to win no matter what, you're clearly not of the ilk that "understands" that type of mentality and your kind will die off and be a distant memory of the past like those fans of the Bucs, Seahawks, Cards, and Patriots before they started winning. You have losing seasons, but you don't want to have a losing mentality.

47 years and counting nothing has changed nothing will change anytime soon with the current regime.

You are easily pacified with a few wins against bad teams.

Lets talk 2016 worst QB in the NFL a 3-7 record last place all on Mike Maccagnan and Todd Bowles.

Hackenburg isn't even good enough to dress and we wasted a 2nd round pick on this guy.

Prescott is an exceptional a very good team with the best OL in the NFL but come on the Jets are continually whiffing the draft out of 8 picks we average 2 good players maybe.

You've just made my case why Prescott couldnt work here

This is a run-on sentence, and the bolded is bad grammar.

LOL! Was waiting for that

I realized that it was a run-on but then rationalized that the INTENDED reader wouldn't even notice it and the irony/satire/hypocrisy would be pointed out by more apt posters. I should have left off the "when writing on the internet forum"

Run on sentence?

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way – in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.
