Jets workout pass rusher Smith.

The Jets on Tuesday held a workout at which free agent defensive end Quanterus Smith tried out for them.

The Jets have a depth need at edge rusher because rookie outside linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin, a second-stringer, sustained a scary concussion in Sunday's win over the Browns

Quinton Coples is the Jets' starting rush outside linebacker, while Calvin Pace starts at the other outside linebacker spot, on the strong side. Mauldin is listed as Coples' backup.

Currently, second-year pro Trevor Reilly is the Jets' only healthy backup outside linebacker. (Reilly is listed as Pace's backup, but can play both spots.) Mauldin seems likely to miss Monday's game at the Colts.

Smith's workout with the Jets was first reported by the Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson.

Smith was a fifth-round draft pick by the Broncos in 2013. He didn't play in any games that year. Last season, he played in 15 games, with no starts, and had zero sacks. The Broncos waived him in April after he failed his physical.

Now, because of Mauldin's concussion — which could sideline him for an undetermined amount of time — Smith is getting another shot, with the Jets.

Why did Smith fail his physical with Denver?

Quanterus Smith’s potential never matched his production. With the draft approaching this week, creating additional competition for roster spots, the Broncos waived the defensive end with injury after a failed physical on his left knee.

A fifth-round draft choice in 2013 out of Western Kentucky, Smith played 15 games last season as DeMarcus Ware’s backup, posting 11 tackles and zero sacks, leaving the Broncos ready to move in a different direction as first reported by The Denver Post. He appeared in 308 snaps, showing flashes of pass-rush ability, but was unable to gain traction. According to Pro Football Focus, Smith received a negative grade in all games, save for his 15-play appearance at New England where he displayed strong run defense. He spent the 2013 NFL season on injured reserve because of a knee injury suffered in his final collegiate season.

Smith did not suit up in the divisional round playoff loss to the Indianapolis Colts. He was placed on the injured reserve with a knee injury after not practicing the Friday before the game. Shaquil Barrett, a former star at Colorado State, took his roster spot for the postseason game and is a candidate to earn a spot this season.

The Broncos began veteran minicamp practices Tuesday at Dove Valley.

Guy was an interesting prospect.  He was a big time college pass rusher, but blew out his knee and was not able to workout pre=draft.  That is why he dropped.   Broncos put him on the IR to redshirt him as a rookie while he rehabbed his ACL.  He played some last year, but the IR'ed him again for a knee near the end of the season.  I am not sure if these are new injuries or the same one.

The fact that we need a pass rusher with all our D-picks is a SMH moment.

1.  Everybody needs a pass rusher.

2.  We may need an OLB with the Mauldin injury.  Terming it a "pass rusher" is a press thing.

3. Our pass rush is above average, at a minimum.

4. Tuesday is tryout day.  Everybody holds tryouts and only stupid teams do not have in everybody they can so that they have a constantly updated list of who they will bring in at each position in case of emergency.  It is like the draft board, only near infinite in the amount of available players on the street and practice squads and each must be ranked.

Perhaps Aaron Maybin is available.  :)

Above average???  I didnt see a lot of pressure Sunday and clearly management agrees. The Mauldin injury alone is not doing this IMO.

You can put as many question marks as you like, but to the extent that the Mauldin injury alone is not doing this, it is being done solely because it was a Tuesday.  They got 3 sacks and caused 2 fumbles. You didn't see it because you didn't want to.  Teams generally work out several guys on Tuesday.  This is an interesting prospect that has been dealing with injury issues.  They did not decide they were desperate at pass rusher and go after a failed 5th round pick.  They are (correctly) looking to improve the roster (and practice squad) anywhere they can.  In fact, if they were so worried about the pass rush they would have immediately signed Babin instead of leaving him out there for the Ravens.  Or do you think they worked out Terrelle Pryor because they believe Owusu, Decker, Marshall, Enunwa and Kerley suck balls? A few times a year you will read about Jamarcus Russell getting worked out.  It's not because he is going to sign.

Every Tuesday, a cluster of unemployed NFL players get a chance to win new jobs.  Every Wednesday, we get the list of players who tried out on Tuesday.
