Putting $10 on Rodgers for MVP ... to win $8,000

Recommended Posts

This only works if you don't have accounts with the online sportsbooks already, but both Bet365 and FanDuel are running "get free bonus bet dollars when you join" promotions (Bet365 is an automatic $150 after you bet $5, FanDuel is $200 if you win your first bet of $5 or more). FanDuel has Rodgers at +2500 for MVP; Bet365 has him at +2000. Put all the bonus bets on Rodgers and you're set to win 8K if he gets the MVP, for a risk of $10.

To me, Rodgers is basically the lock MVP if he stays healthy; everyone's already seen what the Jets are without him, so if he has a decent year and we're the top-tier team everyone is predicting, it'll be hard to call him anything but the "most valuable". So I figure what the hell, may as well take a swing.

(BTW, if you're going to sign up for these, please message me for my FanDuel referral code, since we'd both get an extra $50 in bonus bets)

Did you confer with @FidelioJet though?

Gambling is for fools.

With that said, my brother said he put some nominal sum on a big parley for Week 1, picking the winner of all games.  If he wins it, and hits all the game winners that week, he gets something close to $100K, lol.  Long odds, of course.

If you're gambling money you can't afford to lose, you're a fool. If you're gambling money you can afford to lose, on something that'll increase your enjoyment, you're fine. If you're this guy ...

he is not winning it -he is a 40 year old QB  past his prime coming off a major injury

sequels usually are worse than the original movie which we already saw in Brett Farve

Every gambler convinces themselves they "can afford to lose it".

Just like every alcoholic convinces themselves they can afford that next bottle of hooch.

You do you, this is one thing I will never join in on.  :) Especially if the Jets are involved, lol.

Plus, I already do the hooch thing, so yeah.

Good for you dude.  I hope you win.  Rodgers has a shot to do it.

Agree....gambling just never seems to work out for anyone.

The key to using bonus bets....particularly those you get for placing a losing bet (i.e. those "risk free" promotions), is putting the bonus bet on a "plus" money wager.

For example, say you have a promo that allows you a "risk free bet" for up to $100.  You place a $100 bet on the Yankees money line tonight.

The Yankees lose so your down $100 - but wait - it was risk free - so the sportsbook gives you a free $100 bet.

In all cases, the amount of the "free bet" is never paid out in you winnings....you only get the winnings from the wager itself.

So, if you use the free bet on the Yanks to win tomorrow night at -110 odds and the Yankees win - you "win" $90.91, but you were down $100 so all total your risk free bet prop netted you a negative $9.09.  It's a lose/lose proposition unless you use the bonus bet on a plus money wager.

Actually Favre played well in the first 11 games until he tore a bicept tendon. 20 TD's, 13 Int's, 70% comp rate, 2461 yards. The team was 8-3.

The following year with Minnesota he posted his career best passer rating of 107 at age 40. So not really the best example.

This is a moronic take.  You're equating anyone who gambles to an alcoholic.

You can eat your betting money but don't bet your eating money.    That's the philosophy that works for me.   I can certainly "afford" to lose the little amounts that I bet most days.  I enjoy sports gambling.  It's entertainment for me.  I've never really enjoyed casino games, but used to go there with friends.  Aside from poker and craps, they are all abysmally boring after a few minutes. Even poker gets boring.   But I love sports and do some sports betting most days.  My bankroll is pretty good too with it for the last couple years.  And, your Nats have been real good to MLB bettors this season.  Hope they keep it up.  Only 5 more weeks of MLB  betting because around labor day, the floodgates open for the minor leaguers and everything becomes even less predictable.  But that's when NFL starts up  so OK!

It sure is.  Even with a ton of research, it's still a bet.

It's very entertaining to me watching all the inveterate gamblers get butthurt because someone doesn't like gambling as much as they do.

Also, investing =/= sports gambling.  If you think they're the same, it's you that I hope doesn't do any investing, lol.

I remember when a $25 or $50 bet seemed like a lot.  But I have still not upped my betting to keep up with inflation.  It is rare that I ever place a bet with 3 digits or more.  Trying to keep it fun.   No butt-hurt here @Warfish.  Just explaining what and why so you can understand that others don't share your view.
