Rex Ryan didn't quite channel Jets great Joe Namath during the Knicks' 113-96 loss to the Lakers last night at the Garden, but he was close, essentially guaranteeing a Jets Super Bowl victory. The Gang Green coach told the Post "there's no way we don't get it done next year," and said to MSG's Jill Martin at halftime that "next year I know we'll win it."

Ryan, wearing a throwback Clyde Frazier jersey and seated courtside next to his wife Michelle, got a resounding ovation from the crowd. But in a quiet moment in the bowels of the Garden, Ryan said last month's AFC Championship 24-19 loss in Pittsburgh still stings but will spur the Jets on to a title of their own next season.

"It feeds the competitiveness in you," Ryan said. "You're sick that you missed out again, two years in a row. I know how important it us to this town and our fans, and how important it is to me, this football team. To come up short again, it's a huge blow.

"But you do remember," he said. "It drives your competitive spirit, like there's no way, no way we don't get it done next year. That's how you feel. That's how I feel. You can't wait to get back and have at it again."

Ryan is used to off-the-field headlines, after a series of foot-fetish videos, allegedly of his wife Michelle, hit the web. That's why he is uniquely qualified to offer advice to young quarterback Mark Sanchez, who has been embroiled in a media firestorm of his own after an alleged tryst with Eliza Kruger, a 17-year-old Connecticut girl.

"Not everybody can play quarterback in this town. It takes a special person, and Mark can do it. He's proved that he can do it. He's focused and determined," Ryan said. "Some guys would wilt under the pressure of New York, of being in the city. But Mark looks forward to it.

"You've got to have broad shoulders, he has broad shoulders," he said. "I always talk about skin like an armadillo -- though I know it's armor -- but that's the illustration we make to our guys. He's a great player, a great person, and he can handle this."

LOVE THE CLYDE THROWBACK!

In this instance ... I think he's right.

Hope so. But having had 2 cracks and turned out two total sh*t halves does not make my heart pound. I love him, though. I just wonder if he hasn't got a little Marty SChottenheimer in him. He has a mini-Marty on the staff already, of course.

Glad to see you continue to hold low standards for this team. Rex might as well be a used car salesman.

Rex is BY FAR the best thing that has happened to this organization since I have been a fan. We get Parcells for a few years then he leave. We get Belichick for a day. We get Rex and the culture has shifted. I do wish he talked less. But he is who is is and two years, two Championship games -- much better results than we have seen in the past.

You said it yourself earlier this year. The Jets are close but won't win the Super Bowl until the third year. Year three is now here, CBA willing.

I think jets fans are generally delusional and enjoy busting thier chops as much as the next guy, so i get where your coming from, but man if you can't be happy with the direction of this franchise atm there's something wrong. Get sex, smoke a doob, drink less, autofellate, pray more, see a shrink, masterbate more, go on prozac, masterbate less, drink more, pray less, auto asphyxiate, etc; whatever your trip is, do more of it..

imagine how cranky you would be if he wasn't 20 -12 overall, 3-2 vs cheatahs and 4-2 in the post season, including wins over indy, san diego and the cheatahs

Jets coach makes another guarantee

Ryan knows Jets will 'win it' next year

Updated Feb 12, 2011 9:51 PM ET

NEW YORK

Jets coach Rex Ryan took the acclaim from New York's basketball fans Friday night before pledging to bring Super Bowl glory to the city, the New York Post reported Saturday.

Ryan, wearing a throwback Clyde Frazier jersey and seated courtside next to his wife Michelle, got a resounding ovation from the Knicks crowd inside Madison Square Garden before the 113-96 loss to the Lakers.

The Gang Green coach said, "there's no way we don't get it done next year," and told the MSG's Jill Martin at halftime that "next year I know we'll win it."

But in a quiet moment in the bowels of the Garden, Ryan said last month's AFC Championship 24-19 loss in Pittsburgh still stings. He hoped it will spur the Jets on to a title of their own next season.

"It feeds the competitiveness in you," Ryan said. "You're sick that you missed out again, two years in a row. I know how important it us to this town and our fans, and how important it is to me, this football team. To come up short again, it's a huge blow."

"But you do remember," he added. "It drives your competitive spirit, like there's no way, no way we don't get it done next year. That's how you feel. That's how I feel. You can't wait to get back and have at it again."

"You've got to have broad shoulders, he has broad shoulders," he added. "I always talk about skin like an armadillo -- though I know it's armor -- but that's the illustration we make to our guys. He's a great player, a great person, and he can handle this."

Man life was much easier when we had head coaches that didn't want to win superbowls.

Yeah, we would go to games...

Complain about the price of food...

Sing "Here comes my 19th Nervous Breakdown" as a group...

Then tout "Just the SAME OLD JETS..."

This guy has been instrumental in the biggest culture shift in organization history; I refuse to knock him. And if you saw the interview, obviously, it came off a lot different than the way the media tries to spin it.

I agree. Don't read between the lines, take it as stated and you will see it in the correct context.

I was not going to say another damn thing about the Jets this year after the loss to Pitt. I didnt even watch the SB. Here is why and why I am writing this after reading Rex's latest comments. Don't tell me another F'en thing about winning super bowls. How about winning the F'en division first. Then getting a home playoff game perhaps even a bye in the first round.

What the F, happened against Pitt?? You have the team come out flat and spot Pitt 24 points? I dont what to hear crap about winning super bowls. As bad as spotting Pitt 24, we dont have a freaking time out to use for our last drive? The game against Pitt was managed poorly and thats a fact. We beat the best team in the NFL and that's the Pats regardless of if I like that fact or not it's the truth. We should have come out against Pitt and kick their butts PEERIOD. There is no excuse for how the team played and how the coaches prepared. It was stupid and a shame.

We should have been there NOT Pitt. whether we win the game against the Packers is not the point, we should have been in that game.

Anyway, sorry to blow off steam but losing to Pitt was terrible. No way is that team better than us. NO WAY. And you saw the results against the Packers.

Rex, shut the F up and do your job a little better this coming year. Stop with all the talk and make sure the team is ready each and every week to play.

That's my two cents.....

Really? I mean, really?

I would understand someone saying the preceding rant against Herm Edwards but not against Rex.

Rex wins. You're literally throwing him under the bus over one game? And that game was the second consecutive AFC Championship Game for the Jets.

Who was the last Jets coach to take the team to back to back AFC title games? Oh that's right. IT NEVER FREAKIN' HAPPENED UNTIL REX MADE IT HAPPEN!!!

Rex will win the Super Bowl. Anybody whining about a man being confident in his team really needs to STFU.
