I guess I watched a completely different game last night.....

yeah I see the 9 page thread, but it got sloppy and this deserves another one anyway. See, I expect this kind of stuff from JetNation, like NEVER being happy with Schottenheimer; if he throws too much, we should stick to ground and pound; if he runs, too conservative. That's pretty ridiculous, but we expect it. AND I suppose, now our franchise QB, with four road playoff wins in 2 years, coming off a great win on sunday night vs. Dallas is next in line to be unable to please.......here in the nation.

But, the problem is I'm hearing it everywhere! Somebody mentioned Colin "the idiot" Cowherd, who changes his mind every other day via "buying and selling stock" saying he's "not sold on sanchez" and Trent Dilfer actually had to play apologist by saying "well, like John Elway early on, he is limited by the offense......" OF course, I thought we threw the ball over 40 times, while running Greene about 11, but...... I also though they came out throwing right away on their first series, but....

Then I listened to the bozo callers----supposed Jets fans---saying things like "we just won't win with him...." and "he doesn't deserve the C on his jersey." hahaha I guess they would rather have had Rothlesberger yesterday or Eli or Romo!

Again, I'm used to feeling like I'm in the bizarro world when it comes to this team's fans, but, as a guy who blasted Sanchez in an article after last years pathetic opening day and in fact, blasted the draft pick, I said several times during the game that Sanchez has grown up before our eyes. At one point in the fourth, I said that regardless of the outcome, I was ecstatic with what I saw from him.........and the small group I watched with agreed.

Look, it's obvious that THIS coaching staff is ready to let the kid do his thing (so Dilfer is an idiot when he says that he wont get a chance to shine as long as they are here.) That's #1. Now, I'm ready for my first good lambasting of the season here on the Nation.....so, this is what I saw from the kid (without the luxury of the DVR unfortunately):

THE BAD

He continues to start the game slow, a la Pittsburgh last year. True, that is a concern. However, it WAS the opening game of a lockout shortened season (one in which he held his own mini camp to earn that C). Not to mention, I'd rather have a QB that heats up as the game goes on, then one who fades.

He DID throw a bad pick (not that I've ever seen a good one). So did Romo, Matt Ryan, the new sensation Cam Newton, Cutler, Manning, Freeman, Hasselbeck, Rivers threw 2, Schaub threw 2, and Rothlesberger went for a hat trick, so..... We can't all have Ryan Fitzpatrick.

He failed to see the specialist, blitzing, ball-stripping freak racing in untouched on one play, and he coughed the ball up.

and of course, like every single QB who has ever strapped on a helmet, he misfired on a few balls. The only one, besides the INT that was notable was a pass to Plax, where he failed to use his vertical dominance and threw more of a Santonio Holmes lead pass.

THE GOOD

Since we're on the subject, let's start with his real-time correction to the last problem, when he delivered a perfectly placed, signature Plaxico Burress TD. (After the miscommunication, I thought, "He and Plax will have to get that down this week if he wants to utilize him properly, but it didnt take that long; get used to that sh*t all year.)

Despite the slow start, he ends the half with a 9 play 83 yard drive, where he threw for four first downs and a TD-- After a perfectly thrown TD pass went through the hands of Derrick "two left feet" Mason, he shows why he is already one of the best in the league on the move, when he rolls right and hits Dustin Keller in the back of the endzone.

He threw for 7 first downs in the first half, and maybe I'm wrong but I count 17 passes for first downs all day. I believe that's pretty good!

He basically made that great screen to LT work by selling the fake and then hanging in till the last minute.

He continues to click with Dustin Keller, which is always on the to-do list.

He basically spread the ball around as evenly as you can AND remember he is one man short after trading Cothery for this fool Mason.

He continues to make plays by moving around in the pocket.

He connected on a strike to Cumberland that he set up with a beautiful pump fake. Shades of freddy baxter. lol That could turn into a nice connection.

.....and basically, he just looked poised and in control throughout.

In summary, he carried the offense in lieu of an anemic 40 yard effort by the running backs and the leagues #1 sack artist working on the matador, Wayne Hunter (did you see the play he was LITERALLY spun around like a turnstile? lol) and went head to head against one of the leagues so called elite, backwards hat wearing QB's throwing up 26 of 44 for 335 and 2 td's and erasing a 14 point deficit in the 4th quarter to win the game.

OK, so tell me why I shouldn't be excited about this kid?

I thought Sanchez did a good job throwing the ball yesterday, there are 15 games left so let's not put him in Canton just yet.

As to Schott, I thought he did an outstanding job of calling the punt block and the Romo fumble on the goal line. Without those 2 key calls there was no chance of winning that game.

In all seriousness, how is it possible to go 16 games without a 1st quarter TD? and I was a schott apologist......

I don't think that was the game plan. lol and Demarcus Ware was raping our entire line, but please LR, don't mistake this for a schotty thread--- I gave up defending him around here. This is strictly a "give Sanchez some credit and not make him another schotty" thread. That's all!

Excellent all around post lancemehl.

That's what happens to a fan base that hasn't won a championship since 1968-1969 though, some of our fans can't help but stay negative, even after an amazing come from behind victory during a JetLife stadium miracle on 9/11.

To make a long story short, Sanchez did make a couple of mistakes, but he finished the game with a QB rating of 88.7, 335 passing yards, 2 TD's, including a beautiful come from behind victory from 14 down on opening night. The drive heading into the half was also a drive of perfection. He also used all of his offensive weapons, in essence, keeping the Cowboys defense off balance. From Holmes, Plaxico and Mason, to Keller and Cumberland, all the way down to Tomlinson coming out of the backfield... He spread the ball around, and spread the ball around with plenty of success. I remember reading an offseason article basically making it known that Sanchez will struggle involving everyone into the offense. Sanchez pretty much proved that article wrong last night. Tomlinson, Burress and Holmes all recorded 70+ receiving yards but Keller had a monster game in my eyes. 5 receptions for 61 yards and a TD, but also picked up 5 first downs.

Sanchez may start off cold, but before it's all said and done? He's dissecting opposing D's during the 2nd half of ball games. Not only is this kid a bonafide winner, but he's a closer with ice water running through his veins. Call me crazy, but Sanchez played outstanding last night, especially considering the fact that DeMarcus Ware and the Cowboys defense came after Sanchez guns blazing for 4 quarters strong. Lets not forget, Rob Ryan is one hell of a defensive defensive coordinator. Sanchez was under pressure all night, that's something that we'll have to fix with our offensive line, but under these circumstances? Going back and watching film on this game, Sanchez most definitely played his a$$ off, he also out played Tony Romo by leaps and bounds. Sanchez was a reason why we came back to win the game, he wasn't the reason why we lost.

Got to agree Lance. Sanchez looked very good last night in spite tf the fact that he was lucky to get out alive. he performed very well considering the pressure.

In Schott's defense he did a good job adjusting the scheme in the second half to save Sanchez's life. He starting using a 3 TE set that negated a good bit of the pass rush.

I get so frustrated at the slow start to every freaking game that we should be dominating. Our o line was terrible. Ware was destroying them last night. And it wasn't just hunter that got lit up, he got one up the middle also. the running game was a complete zero. shonn greene is not a starting running back. lt is doing what he does which is good. wr are doing well. d line should have been eating up the cowboys o line. i knew we needed a starting calibur de. maybe they will get better, i hope they do, but right now they aren't that good. lb's seem to be doing well. cromartie sucks. and now on sanchez. the guy drives me insane. i love his heart and his big play, but he needs to do the little things all game long.

A lot of people's gripe with Schott last night, was it took him to long to get away from the script, and adjust to a different game plan, (I blame that on Mangini, who believed in the GP no matter what) which he finally did, and we started moving the ball. Hopefully Tom Moore will look over the film this week and suggest to Schottenhiemer that listen having a script and a plan is the correct thing to do, but don't be afraid to deviate from it immediatly if you see something that you did not plan for, and he starts doing what Callahan was famous for attacking weaknesses of the other team not just playing to your own strengths, you play the Colts you run the ball 45 times, you play the Pats, Cowboys, Steelers, ect. you pass the ball 40 times.

As far as Sanchez I am finally comfortable when he drops back to pass, when the ball is released I am starting to believe it has a great chance to be completed, instead of intercepted, so to me that makes me very excited.

I watched the same game. I have been saying time and time again, the Jets drafted Sanchez to be a star, a bonafide top 5 QB. They didn't draft him to hold the fort and be Chad Pennington. Back in 98 I remember feeling like everytime Vinny released the ball it was going to be big. I'm starting to have that feeling with Mark. I can't blame Mark for the INT honestly. throwing the ball 44 times more often than not is going to result in at least one pick. But man he made some big time throws and he just never quits. Fine, Matt Ryan might be more robotic in the fundamentals, but I'll take sanchez every time.

jets fans don't know how to handle success. they are programmed to point fingers, assign blame and complain. as I posted yesterday, opening games are not a good indicator of how a team will do, and this year with the lockout, you pretty much are just happy for the W and move on

don't forget the packers needed the lions to beat tampa just to make the playoffs, and now everybody has them winning the next 10 SB's.

That's how stuff gets DONE! I imagine he used the highlight, formerly truck, stick.

Sanchez was fine and clearly progress. The rest of the year will tell us to what end, and there's some hope that it's to a really high one. I thought he threw the ball well for the most part.

I disagree. While Sanchez played against a depleted tissue paper secondary, Romo faced a top defense. They both made mistakes that prevented their team from winning the game, but Romo made them against a better team. Sanchez for all his numbers did not play well enough to win. Do you really think he did?

If Chad Pennington was our QB, we would have lost by 40 on Monday night. There would have been no 2-minute drill TD to end the first half. We would have had no chance of scoring the 13 points the offense scored in the 2nd half.

Your right in what you write...Dallas was expecting the run, that's why their game plan was to run-gap-blitz thats because Rex's bro was on the other sideline...we played on our heals for about 55 minutes and we made Dallas make mistakes and we capitalized on it....QB's will make some mistakes...it's up to the "team" to overcome them and make plays as well. Overall we won and that's the bottom line...now that we have the first win in...I see many more coming

Sanchez was Sanchez last night. Moments of brilliance and moments of WHAT THE sh*t. Nothing new.

Yep. But at least now Im feeling better about Sanchez than I did his first two years. He is who he is... makes some amazing throws and reads, but other times seems clueless. He'll never be an elite QB, but if he continues to make big plays when it matters most, he will be a champion.

Sanchez played well. Anyone who can't see that is focusing on the INT and the fumble while ignoring the rest....which includes 2 Touchdowns, 335 yards passing, toughness, better mid to long throws, leadership, great 83 yard dive at the end of the first half. and a 59.1 completion pct.

So please, I hope people can see he has improved. Let's see if the improvement continues in Game 2.

I am not belittling the good things that he did, just saying that they were not enough to win. I later heard this A.M. that in the new QB rating, Sanchez was 30th of 33 because the plays that won the game had nothing to do with him. Remember --he had two fumbles and a three and out after the INT. His interception led directly to a TD. Radio Fatso is killing a Jets D that allowed 17 points and made a game winning play. They were better than people are saying they were. And they made a play that essentially put the Jets in position to win. To me, Sanchez kind of balanced himself out the other night. That is not what I want in a QB.

Let's be crystal clear. Fatso is killing the Jets for one reason only. To deflect attention away from the Giants, who laid a much bigger egg on Sunday. But Fatso can't bring himself to talk about it to he does what any good toddler would do and redirects the negativity to something he despises.

For a big guy, Hunter does not look very strong. Ware threw him around. I expect Ware's speed and quickness to be a problem. He should not toss my right tackle around like a rag doll. That lack of strength could also bode badly for the run game.

My personal feelings about QB ratings are that they are bull. But since this one repeated what I said I thought it was valid. Yuk yuk. All TDs help. People were saying how clutch he was. He was not very clutch Monday night with the fumble and the 3 and out. But that happens to everyone. I hope for better in games to come. I hate the fumbles more than the INT because you can throw the ball away to avoid them.

You guys are nuts. Sanchez played meh at best. Missed open receivers, didn't hit a wide open santonio on a slant that would have been a td (Santonio wasn't happy) fumbled and got picked and held the ball wayyy too long. This all happened. He didn't lead his team to victory. He didn't exploit an absolutely decimated Dallas secondary, didn't have a 100 yd reciever, (witten was over 100 against a top three defense), and if he doesn't get huge help from a Revis pick and a McKnight punt block TD--you're all killing him right now. This post isn't about whether he's good or great or going to be awesome or awful. It's about what actually happened without green tinted glasses on. He started slow and played tentative and made mistakes and didn't do enough against a rotten secondary. This all happened.

I don't think he got tossed around like a rag doll. I think that Hunter got stood up and driven back a bunch of times. I believe that is because he ended up too upright because he was afraid to be left standing still while Ware blew by him (again). I think Hunter has plenty of strength. He is supposed to be the single toughest guy on the team, I doubt he'd get that rep if he were weak. I do expect him to be worse than Woody in the running game.

He couldn't have thrown the ball away to avoid that INT. He threw it right to a linebacker because he got fooled on the coverage and thought he had a lane that didn't exist.

One thing is for certain. This year's opener was much better than last years. We still have a little rust, but we're alright and we'll get better as the year goes on. We started slower last season.

Agreed. This is the single best performance after a week off since the opener against the Texans in 2009. If I'm not mistaken it's only the second time they've won after a week off since Rex became coach.

And another thing. Sanchez was drafted top 5, and is currently surrounded by a first ballet HOF RB in LT, A WR who caught the game winning touchdown in XLII, a super MVP in Holmes, a HOF contender in Mason, and a top TE in Keller...and still couldn't beat up a secondary full of practice squad players. This is also all true. So if it ain't him, it's Schotty. But somebody's got to be accountable.

It's probably about 50/50 and its very possible both suck. Still, that hookup with Plaxico hadn't-played-an-NFL-game-in-3-years Burress on the TD was a thing of beauty. I think the weapons around him are going to improve Sanchez's numbers in year 3 and he'll look like an average QB in '11.

You are down on Jets fans for overreacting to each bad play by Sanchez, but you call Mason a fool? If Mark Sanchez ever becomes as a good a QB as Derrick Mason has been WR we will all be sitting pretty.

ok fair enough....based on his play thus far however...........I'm not into given FA's a lifetime pass. If Mason ends the season on this same note.......then, to me, he is a fool, joining dudes like and neil O'donnell and Eric Atwater. I'm a hardliner Jets fan, tho. lol
