The Future Of Joe McKnight

Unlike when a certain backup quarterback was traded to the Jets last off-season, there wasn’t a huge press conference for former Raider running back Mike Goodson.

But the skill-set Goodson brings could spell the end for Joe McKnight.

I’ve always been a pretty big defender of McKnight. I think the talent he brings and the unique set of skills he has have been completely botched. On an offense that has lacked just about any sort of creativity and big-play potential, a dynamic player like McKnight should have been given more opportunities to touch the ball.

Goodson wasn’t given a whole lot of opportunities in Oakland either but made the most of his when he did. He got 35 carries and averaged an absurd 6.3 yards per carry. What may prove even more important in Marty Mornhinweg’s west coast offense is Goodson’s pass catching ability, where he is more than capable of doing damage. Goodson had 16 receptions for 195 yards, good for 12.2 yards per catch average.

McKnight has been in New York for three years and has failed to really do anything productive on offense. Fumbling and injury issues have definitely plagued him, but at what point do you stop giving the guy a pass?

The writing is on the wall. Goodson is about the same size (slightly bigger), has been signed for three years, and has an identical skill-set to McKnight. How much do the Jets really think of McKnight as a running back anyway? Obviously not enough, as proven by his one-week stint at cornerback last season. Who knows how he reacts to having to learn another offensive system.

With a more balanced back in Bilal Powell set to get the bulk of the carries and Goodson already on the roster as a dynamic change-of-pace guy, the Jets may look to pick up a bruiser late in the draft or could be content with using Lex Hilliard in that role.

McKnight has been very solid as a kick returner and I think it’s safe to say the move to trade Leon Washington and replace him with McKnight worked out well for New York. But how many times have we seen one pro-bowl kick returner leave and another one step right in? From Justin Miller to Leon Washington to Brad Smith to Joe McKnight etc. If McKnight leaves he’ll simply be replaced by someone who will likely do his job just as well.

Again, this is all speculation. I have no inside sources (although it doesn’t seem hard to get one) but I would be worried if I was McKnight, especially since the dead money against the cap if cut is pocket change ($125,250). Could the McKnight era be over before it even started?

One season and then he is gone unless we can find place for a special teams player on the roster.

Overall he was a great pick in the 4th round given that we were picking special teams players in the 4th round!

He wasn't a "great" pick I mean he's not a starter.

I would like to see him compete for the starting job in this new offense.

I see more Shady McCoy in Joe McKnight than in any other backs we have on roster and I think Joe could really excel in this offense.

If it is a true, open competition, I think McKnight makes for a great dark horse candidate to be our starter.

It's true that McKnight and Goodson seem to have overlapping skillsets, however that skillset is exactly what Mornhinweg is looking to exploit. Goodson and McKnight are both constantly dinged.  It makes perfect sense to have them both on the roster and go with the hot hand.

"hot hand", "least intrusive injury"  tomato/tomahtoe

If I remember correctly he played very well in his only NFL start gaining well over 100 yds against Buffalo however, Rex in all his wisdom preferred Greene and an over the hill LT. Another case of poor coaching by Jets head buffoon.

that big game was in 2010. since then he's been banged up. It's not really the coach's fault this guy was always injured.

McKnight's never really shown much on offense. He's got pure speed, but he doesn't seem to have in instinct for the hole, or any juke to him. He's worth keeping on the roster this year as a KOR and as a backup to the backup RB (CB?), but I think he's gone once his contract is up.

It would be easy to assume we're going to draft a RB once again within the top 4 rounds. We're going into season 3 or 4 with him and he still doesn't know how to pass protect. So this is for sure a make or break year.

I think as much as any reason this is why he's seen so little time on the field, even as a 3rd down back which he should theoretically be well-suited for even if he couldn't take 15 touches/game.

There was an article in the post or the news last year or late the year before that said that McKnight was ahead of Powell was because he was already able to pass protect and Powell couldn't.  McKnight was hurt damn near all of 2012 and probably was in the doghouse from the fight with his position coaches son. Of course Lynn is still here and McKnight hasn't done anything, so I'd guess Slats is probably right.

McKnight is a good return man.  But as a RB, he is all shake, no bake.
