There Are Reasons to Keep Watching the Jets Despite Being Virtually Out of Playoff Contention, Jets Keep Providing Reasons to Tune In

The Jets might be the most entertaining 1-7 team ever. They somehow keep providing reasons to watch despite being virtually out of playoff contention at the season’s midpoint. Last Sunday came the debut of multipurpose acquisition Percy Harvin. This Sunday in Kansas City marks the return of Michael Vick as a starting quarterback.

Replacing an atrocious Geno Smith in the first quarter of Sunday’s loss to Buffalo,

the 34-year-old Vick proved he still has the arm and legs to be a star. He also showed he still has a turnover problem, losing two fumbles and throwing an interception.

Here are three things to watch for with Vick and the Jets against Chiefs:

Vick’s scrambling

The Chiefs are the worst opponent for Vick can face. Kansas City ranks first in the league in pass defense, allowing only 196 yards a game despite already facing Denver’s Peyton Manning, New England’s Tom Brady and San Diego’s Philip Rivers this season. That doesn’t bode well for Vick, who holds a career 56% completion rate.

The good thing is that Vick can still run. Against Buffalo, he took off whenever he felt pressure. In the process, he missed finding open receivers, but he also gained 69 yards, including a 24-yard scramble that set up a touchdown. For the Jets to have a chance, Vick needs to do the same against the Chiefs.

Relying on Chris Ivory and Chris Johnson

Chris Johnson, who rushed for 2,000 yards once with the Tennessee Titans, isn’t happy. The 29-year-old running back told ESPN on Thursday that he was frustrated with his playing time and that he wasn’t sure he was excited for the season’s second half.

Before the season started, it appeared that Johnson, whom the Jets signed as a free agent, and Chris Ivory would evenly split time at running back. That was true through the first three games, with Johnson playing 88 snaps and Ivory playing 82, according to Pro Football Focus.

But in the past five games, Ivory played 171 snaps, while Johnson had 107. The discrepancy was especially glaring against the Bills, when Ivory appeared in 40 plays and Johnson got just 16.

Johnson’s problem is that Ivory has been better. With a beefy build and legs that keep churning even through tackles, Ivory is reminiscent of Seattle’s Marshawn Lynch and has averaged 4.7 yards a carry this season. The leaner, quicker Johnson has averaged 4.0 yards.

The Chiefs are superb at defending passes but mediocre against the run, giving up an average of 113 yards a game. This could be the game in which Ivory and Johnson are both happy with their rushing attempts.

Rex Ryan’s trick plays

The St. Louis Rams were outmatched against the Seattle Seahawks two weeks ago, yet they won because of two trick plays on special teams.

The Jets have run only a few trick plays this season, with Smith and Vick appearing on the field simultaneously, but the results haven’t been great: Vick missed an easy touchdown pass on one, was sacked on another and rushed for three yards on a third.

The Jets got most creative last week, when they had T.J. Graham lie on his stomach in the end zone while Harvin fielded a kickoff. Harvin ran past the goal line and turned to pass to Graham, who had popped to his feet, but the Bills were wise to the ploy and covered him. Harvin tucked the ball and was tackled at his own 3-yard line.

With the Jets 1-7, Ryan might as well keep looking for a trick play that works.

The only reason to watch is because we are fan(atics) who root/cheer for our team well beyond any rational place.

I.e. we're crazy, and crazy to still watch and care as much as most of us do.

1-7, a joke, and my Sundays are still completely built around watching the Jets.

smh

I feel like the old man who was released from prison in Shawshank Redemption. After 50 years of being in lockup, he couldn't handle freedom and hung himself.

After 32 years of watching the Jets (mostly) lose, I don't know what I'd do if they won it all. Probably I would go into shock and die of a heart attack.

I'm so burned out on this team. Unlike most of you who are suffering now, I went through my twelve stages of grief over the spring and summer, starting the day of the shameful locker room celebration when it was announced that Rex was staying. That we're here now, eleven months later, was inevitable.

Well, actually my suffering started well before yours.  Mine started when that idziot drafted a lame qb over playmakers and then force fed us him to us over Sanchez when clearly Sanchez was way ahead ...yeah yeah not saying much but that was his first but not last fatal error.  Sanchez would have been much more servicable while building the team around him...and drafting qb in other rounds and next draft maybe even getting an Orton or so too.

The players suck, the coach is a buffoon, the front office is a mess, and the owner is a punchline. There's just nothing to get excited about between now and whenever our draft position becomes official, and even then we're just marking time until we find a way to screw it up. You never want to tempt fate and say this is as bad as it gets, but...

I'm only watching to see if Matt Simms gets some run. No offense to Vick - he is fun to watch, but he isn't the future, and this season is done anyway. Sorry, that's the biggest reason I'm watching the game...

You should never apologize for finding a reason to watch the Jets. It requires a level of mental gymnastics no non Jet fan can understand. Just know if Simms plays you're going to cry after about 10 sacks, a fumble and 3 interceptions. Any hope must be extinguished.

You're so right. If Simms plays and bombs out, it'll take some serious mental gymnastics to get myself psyched for the next game.

Personally, I'm hoping Woody finds his Bagger Vance on a golf course somewhere and starts making the right, soulful calls. Maybe there will be a choreographed dance routine. Maybe he learns about heart.

Bagger Vance would most likely be escorted off of any golf course Woody plays on.
