This is WHY MODERN SPORTS SPECULATION & CONJECTURE is SUCH BULL$HIT and NOT JOURNALISM, let alone "reporting!"

Apologies for the possibly misleading statement about Peyton Manning.

Peyton Manning - QB -  Broncos

The Denver Post reports Peyton Manning will retire.

Manning is expected to announce his decision late next week. The move isn't a surprise after Manning struggled to hold up physically last year. Despite posting career lows, Manning will go out on top with his second Super Bowl win. A first-ballot Hall of Famer, Manning is the all-time leader in touchdowns (539) and passing yards (71,940). Manning's retirement saves Denver $19 million in cap space.

A source tells Profootballtalk Peyton Manning hasn't made a decision on retirement.

The Denver Post reported Manning will retire, but the Broncos still don't know his plans. Manning is expected to meet with Denver late next week. FOXSports reports the Broncos are moving forward in contract talks without counting Manning's $19 million salary.

It appears Peyton Manning is inching closer toward deciding whether he will play in 2016.

According to Denver Post columnist Woody Paige, Manning "will acknowledge his decision" to retire by the end of next week. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Feb. 1 that Manning told close friends that he expected to retire during the offseason. In addition, Manning has not told anyone in the Broncos' organization about whether or not he plans to retire, team and league sources told Rapoport on Saturday.

Watch:

"Peyton has not made a decision on his future," Patrick Smyth, Broncos vice president of public relations, tweeted Saturday. "Plan remains for him to continue talks with the team this week."

Archie Manning told NFL Media's Rhett Lewis on Saturday that his son "hasn't told me a thing" about retiring next week.

If Manning plans to play next season, he must undergo a team physical by Friday, Rapoport added.

Speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine on Thursday, Broncos general manager John Elway said he's not pushing Manning to make a decision on retirement.

"I met with Peyton a couple nights ago and we had a good talk," Elway said. "As I said after the game, we'll give him as much time as he needs. He still needs some more time so we're going to afford him that time. He deserves it after 18 years in this league."

Elway reiterated several times that he's not pressuring Manning one way or the other and will meet with the quarterback again before the new league year begins March 9.

The Broncos executive shot down suggestions that he needs Manning's decision sooner rather than later so he can move forward on contract negotiations with impending free-agent quarterback Brock Osweiler.

"We're really not in a hurry," Elway said. "It's really fluid. We know where Brock is and he knows what we have to offer. We still have a great deal of interest in Brock and we'd like to do something with Brock. We'll start down those tracks and we'll start talking to Brock about a new contract and see what we can do there. But with that in mind, also affording Peyton the time that he deserves. We're not in any rush. Like I said we have 12 days and we don't feel like we're in a rush there. We'll continue to talk to Peyton during that time and continue to work with Brock and get something done with Brock."

Manning, who turns 40 next month, is one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in NFL history. In addition to his career yards record, which he achieved earlier this season, Manning's second Super Bowl triumph gave him an NFL-record 200 career wins (regular season, playoffs combined). Manning also became the first starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl with two different teams.

Manning was peppered by questions throughout the season about whether 2015 would be his swan song campaign. After he went down with a torn plantar fascia in the middle of the season, speculation grew about whether he would retire. It rose to another level after on-field cameras caught Manning telling Patriots coach Bill Belichick that "this might be my last rodeo" after the Broncos' AFC Championship win.

Can Jets fans come to some sort of agreement that we'll all just verbally agree he's the GOAT, regardless of if you think it's true or not, only because it pisses off New England fans? This should be a thing.

Love this!

Sorry Tex, but Brady will never be regarded as GOAT except among Patriot fans.

The cheating by him and his team and coaches put a nail in that coffin.  But in the minds of Pats fans, you can make him into anything you want.  In your case, probably a blow-up doll with a jar of vasoline.

brady herself would say montana is the GOAT, any real pats* fan knows this

1) Joe Montana, San Francisco 49ers & Kansas City Chiefs.

Career postseason record: 16-7

Career postseason statistics: 460-734, 5772 yards, 45 TD, 21 INT; 95.6 passer rating

There's no way around it.

Joe Montana is the greatest postseason quarterback in the history of the National Football League.

Montana holds a 4-0 record in the Super Bowl. All four times he posted a triple-digit passer rating. His 11 touchdowns are a Super Bowl record and his zero interceptions in 122 pass attempts are a testament to his greatness.

He helped the 49ers jump out to a 20-0 lead against the Bengals in 1981. They scored 38 points against the Dolphins in 1984. He led one of the greatest fourth quarter game-winning drives in NFL history in a rematch with the Bengals in 1988, culminating in a 10-yard touchdown pass to John Taylor with 34 seconds remaining.

And he threw five touchdown passes against the Broncos, while helping the 49ers score 55 points.

Montana has thrown one or fewer interceptions in 18 of his 23 postseason games. He posted a passer rating above 100 in 12 of his 23 playoff games, including eight in a row. He averages 250 yards and two touchdown passes per game.

Even when Montana struggles, he often finds a way to get the job done. He threw three interceptions against the Cowboys in the 1981 NFC championship game, before firing a game-winning third-down touchdown pass to Dwight Clark with under a minute remaining.

He threw three interceptions against the Giants in the 1984 divisional round, yet still threw for 309 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 63 yards, including a 53-yard scamper, in a 21-10 victory.

"Joe Cool" could win games any way. He won close games: 28-27, 20-16, 27-24. He won blowouts: 55-10. 41-13. 38-16. Simply put, Montana was legendary in the regular season.

In the postseason? He was simply magical.

Until someone dethrones the Patriots from being AFC East Champions everyone takes them "seriously"
