Report: Pegulas’ unhappiness led to Greg Roman’s firing

FILE - In this Aug. 29, 2015 file photo, Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Greg Roman calls plays against the Pittsburgh Steelers during the first half of a preseason NFL football game, in Orchard Park, N.Y. The Buffalo Bills have fired Roman.
The team announced the move in an email released on Friday, Sept. 15, 2016, a day after Buffalo fell to 0-2 following a 37-31 loss to the New York Jets. (AP Photo/Bill Wippert, File)AP

The firing of offensive coordinator Greg Roman five days into the Bills season illustrates how wrong a foot the team has gotten off on this season and it also contradicts a message Ryan gave to his team during training camp.

In a message taped for a Bills-produced documentary, Ryan said he would “be the first m—–f—– that goes” if the team doesn’t succeed during the 2016 season but that was proven incorrect on Friday. According to Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News, the people who will ultimately decide when Ryan is the one to go changed the order of things.

Per Carucci, Bills owners Terry and Kim Pegula have been unhappy about the offense since last season and expressed their concerns to Ryan in a meeting on Friday morning. Among those concerns were the team’s poor record on third-down conversions — they ranked 21st last season and are 6-of-23 this season — and issues getting calls to quarterback Tyrod Taylor in a timely fashion.

The Pegulas also reportedly don’t believe the two long touchdown passes Taylor threw on Thursday “were a reflection of progress” by the quarterback that could carry the offense the rest of this season. The contract Taylor signed before this season doesn’t contain any guarantees beyond this season, which could leave his spot on the team vulnerable to a change in offensive direction.

Should things continue to go the way they have the last two weeks, that’s unlikely to be the only change in direction in Buffalo this year.

SN Exclusive: Bills forced Rex Ryan to use OC Greg Roman as sacrificial lamb

September 16, 2016 4:01pm EDTThe Bills fired OC Greg Roman in a move to appease a disgruntled fanbase, according to SN's Alex Marvez.

An 0-2 start didn’t sit well with Buffalo Bills management.

That led to the sacrifice of Greg Roman as offensive coordinator.

Sporting News has learned that Buffalo’s front office leaned on head coach Rex Ryan to make a significant change in hopes of appeasing a disgruntled fan base. Thus, Roman was on the outs Friday following a 37-31 home loss to the New York Jets.

Anthony Lynn, a well-respected assistant coach, was announced as Roman’s replacement.

Roman, 44, helped the Bills field the NFL’s top rushing offense in 2015 and played a pivotal role in the development of quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who was recently rewarded with a six-year contract extension that could reach $92 million in value.

Ryan himself is feeling the heat after defeats against the Jets and Baltimore. Since the NFL adopted a 12-team playoff format in 1990, only 12 percent of teams that started 0-2 reached the postseason.

The Bills haven’t reached the playoffs since the 1999 campaign.

A defensive specialist, Ryan blamed the unit for the shortcomings against the Jets.

“Their offense against our defense,  it  looked  like  a mismatch today,” said Ryan, whose team surrendered 374 passing yards and one touchdown to Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. “You look for a difference in the game, that was the difference in the game.”

Buffalo’s next contest is Sept. 25 at home against Arizona followed by a road trip to New England. The Cardinals and Patriots were both finalists in last season’s conference championship games.

Roman, who received head-coaching consideration while serving as San Francisco’s offensive coordinator from 2011 to 2014, established the type of ground-based, ball-control attack Ryan was seeking when becoming head coach last year. At the same time, Roman helped the Bills field a big-play element as well.

As noted by ESPN, Buffalo’s offense was 8th in the NFL in yards per play and 10th in 20-yard plays since the start of the 2015 season.

Roman is believed to have one year left on his Bills contract.

Roman is the only non-crony on that coaching staff. Rex effectively talked the Pegula's into firing the one guy that they could have promoted as interim HC if they wanted to fire Rex mid-season.

Roman has done nothing short of building exactly the offense that Rex asked for, and giving him the most productive offense he's ever had. Zero premise for firing.

Now Rex is saying that it was his decision, contradicting Marvez. Translation: Rex feeds Marvez the victimization story a half hour before the presser, then goes out and gives the rote "buck stops here" version, knowing full well that he's insulated himself by giving Marvez the "what REALLY happened was...."

Do you think he will be able to sell (for a second time) the notion that the GM is conducting a vendetta against him?

Jeff Weeks eyeing that promotion.

Greg Roman was the most talented coach on that staff, and probably the only one that isn't a Rex crony or relative.

Like I said, it was Roman and the work he did with that offense last year, that salvaged Rex Year 1 in Buffalo. Because the defense took a huge step backward.

If I were Roman, I'd sue for wrongful termination. LOL

Meh, probably glad to be out of that looney bin. Nepotism and fetishism is a scary combination.

Coward.

Quick addendum to the Rex-as-cockroach theory: I thought it was really cool how he complimented Marshall and Decker by name in his postgame presser, but referred to Idzik draftee and 92-yard-getter Quincy Enunwa only as "81," even though he coached Enunwa for a whole season.

It's always been crucially important for Rex to point out that anyone hurting his defense is among the greatest players in the history of sport. Admitting that Enunwa carried the offense in the first half would have killed him.

110% accurate. Not a question in my mind. It's the kind of stuff he did here, I flipped out over, and people flamed me for. Until they caught up.

I don't know why I should be shocked that Rex is still using the same gameplan on and off the field, but I am.

It's a cute theory but does anyone really buy this?  You think Rex fed a reporter the story invoking his billionaire boss' name in an outright lie to make himself look "clean".  In what world is that even a remote possibility lol.

Clearly it was Whaley who fed the story to Marvez AFTER getting Pegulas permission to use his name.

duh...

Let me make it simpler.  Your theory is completely absurd, devoid of logic, and most certainly did NOT happen.

That is, unless you think Rex wanted to get fired immediately followed by being blackballed in the league.  His press conference is a transparent attempt to "take every bullet" as he said he'd do.

There are plenty of real examples to criticize Rex for and the fact he's doing poorly is GREAT considering I hate the Bills.  No need to float asinine theories in a veiled attempt to justify your odd hatred.  Just lol @ his D getting destroyed last night and hope they go 4-12 with the wins coming against the Pats and Dolphins.
