The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports former New York Jets defensive lineman Barry Bennett and his wife, Carol, were found dead Wednesday in their home in Long Prairie, Minnesota.

The 63-year-old Bennett played more than six of his 11 NFL seasons with the Jets, from 1982-88. His career started in 1978 with the New Orleans Saints, after being picked in the third round of the NFL Draft (60th overall).

Bennett and his wife died under “suspicious circumstances,” the Todd County Sheriff’s Office said, per the Mercury News.

In the course of the investigation, authorities identified the suspect as Dylan John Bennett, the couple’s son. He had been living at the home in Long Prairie, a city of about 3,500 midway between Minneapolis and Fargo, North Dakota. Investigators say Dylan Bennett may have fled the state. He is believed to be driving a blue 2018 Hyundai Sante Fe with a Minnesota license plate of BCK-487.

WCCO reports “the FBI was called in to assist in the investigation because the Todd County Sheriff’s Office believes Dylan has already left the state of Minnesota."

Here are more details on Bennett’s death from the Associated Press:

LONG PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — Authorities in Minnesota are investigating the deaths of a former NFL lineman and his wife under what they call suspicious circumstances.

The bodies of Barry Bennett, 63, and his wife Carol were found Wednesday after a friend went to their home in Long Prairie for a welfare check.

Todd County Sheriff Todd Och said a 22-year-old man is being sought in the case.

Barry Bennett played 11 seasons in the NFL with New Orleans, the New York Jets and Minnesota.

The Star Tribune reported Bennett had retired from teaching physical education in Long Prairie, a town of about 3,500 people about two hours northwest of the Twin Cities. Jon Kringen, superintendent for the Long Prairie Grey Eagle School District, said Bennett rarely talked about his NFL career unless someone asked.

A former defensive lineman for the New York Jets and his wife were found dead in a rural Minnesota home – and detectives are searching for the couple’s son in their “suspicious deaths,” police said.

The bodies of Barry Bennett, 63, and his wife, Carol, were found Wednesday in the former NFL player’s home in Long Prairie. A friend called the Todd County Sheriff’s Office to report that Bennett had not returned phone calls or texts from a day earlier.

Both Barry Bennett and his wife, also 63, were found dead “under suspicious circumstances,” according to Todd County Sheriff Steve Och, who did not officially identify the Bennetts on Thursday because their relatives had not yet been notified of their deaths.

But sources have identified the victims as Bennett and his wife, KMSP reported.

Investigators later identified Dylan John Bennett, 22, as a suspect in the case, though Och did not identify the man’s relationship to the Bennetts. Neighbors have identified him as the couple’s youngest son, KVLY reported.

Bennett is believed to be driving a blue 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe with Minnesota plates, Och said in Thursday’s statement. Investigators suspect Dylan Bennett may have left Minnesota, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported.

“Based on information gathered during the investigation, it is determined that there is no threat to public safety at this time,” the statement read.

After graduating from Concordia College in Minnesota, Barry Bennett played 11 seasons in the NFL, including six seasons with the Jets from 1982 to 1987. He also played for the New Orleans Saints from 1978 through 1981 and appeared in one game for the Minnesota Vikings in 1988, the final year he played.

Bennett taught physical education at a high school in Long Prairie for about a decade after his NFL career and retired about four years ago, the superintendent of the Long Prairie Grey Eagle School District told the Star Tribune.

Bennett was a “really good man” who loved interacting with children and rarely spoke of his NFL playing days, superintendent Jon Kringen told the newspaper.

“It hit hard this morning,” Kringen said. “Everyone was in shock when they heard. It’s impossible to comprehend that this could happen. People are lost for understanding. … He and his wife were good people.”

Messages seeking comment from a Jets spokesman and the Todd County Sheriff’s Office were not immediately returned Friday.

Eleven-year NFL veteran Barry Bennett and his wife, Carol, were found dead Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.

Bennett, 63, and his wife were found in their home in Long Prairie, Minnesota. They were both shot, according to authorities, who are seeking Bennett’s son, 22-year-old Dylan John Bennett. He’s been charged with two counts of second-degree murder without premeditation, per AP.

A criminal complaint revealed Dylan Bennett’s car was found at the scene. It contained an empty box for a 9 mm handgun and some ammunition. Authorities believe Dylan Bennett fled to Mexico. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

In that same complaint, Barry Bennett said in December that Dylan spoke about killing his parents while in a mental health facility.

Dylan is believed to be driving a blue 2018 Hyundai Sante Fe from Minnesota, license plate number BCK-487, according to the Pioneer Press.

The bodies of Carol and Barry Bennett were discovered by a friend who was doing a welfare check after Barry failed to reply to text messages and calls.

Drafted out of Concordia College, Bennett played for the New Orleans SaintsNew York Jets and Minnesota Vikings during his 11-year career in the NFL.

The Vikings released a statement via Twitter:

We are saddened by the tragic loss of former Vikings player Barry Bennett and his wife, Carol. Our thoughts are with their friends and family during this difficult time.

Bennett was also a three-time wrestling champion in college. Up until retiring “a few years ago,” he coached football and wrestling in Long Prairie.

Bennett’s former college coach, Jim Christopherson, is among those mourning the couple’s deaths.

“They were quality people,” he said, per the Pioneer Press.

Son of former Jet Barry Bennett charged with murdering his parents

The 22-year-old was the primary suspect in the case

9:42AM

More tragic news has surfaced in case of former Jets DL Barry Bennett and his wife Carol's death last Wednesday in their Minnesota home.

It looks like their son, Dylan, is the culprit in the shooting as he was arrested in Cancun, Mexico on Saturday. Being a primary suspect when the news broke last week, he is now being charged with murdering his parents, per The Post's Laura Italiano

The 22-year-old fled to Cancun, but authorities traced him based off his cell phone records and ATM usage on the way.

The 63-year-old Barry Bennett played for the Jets from 1982-1988 during his 11-year NFL career. He played in 132 games, amassing 18.5 career sacks as a defensive tackle/end. Bennett's best season was in 1985, when he started all 16 games for the Jets and finished the season with 7.5 sacks.

  • 2 weeks later...

A friend of Barry's from his time with the Jets attended the service for Barry recently.  I was shocked to hear that the Jets didn't even have the decency to send effin flowers to his service.  Barry played for the team for 6 seasons and  met a horrible fate with his wife.   Would sending a wreath of flowers be too difficult for a billion dollar franchise ?  Bad Job Chris Johnson and Jets organization on this . So much for former players being family.
