Stefon Diggs trade whispers grow with Vikings at breaking point

October 3, 2019 | 9:09am | Updated

Maybe Kirk Cousins apologized to the wrong receiver.

Trade speculation around Stefon Diggs picked up when he did not practice with the Vikings on Wednesday with a “not injury related” designation. Diggs reportedly looked agitated on Minnesota’s sideline on Sunday as the offense repeatedly faltered in a 16-6 loss to the Bears.  Diggs, who signed a five-year, $81 million extension in 2018, has not talked to the local media in two weeks.

The Vikings, according to ESPN.com, told one team that they were not planning on trading Diggs. However, a series of cryptic tweets from Diggs has given potential suitors hope. The Patriots would likely be among those interested in the 25-year-old after their signing of Antonio Brown backfired.

The blame for the stalling offense has mostly fallen on the shoulders of struggling quarterback Kirk Cousins and head coach Mike Zimmer. Cousins apologized to Adam Thielen, who complained that the offense is one-dimensional, after missing him on a deep touchdown pass in the first quarter in Chicago.

“That’s arguably seven points,” Cousins said on KFAN of the errant pass. “If you put the ball where it needs to be, he’s shown … that he will make that play and he’ll probably finish the play in the end zone and pull away from the defender.”

But clearly patience is running thin all around the 2-2 Vikings, who have three of the top playmakers in the league in Diggs, Thielen and Dalvin Cook. Apologies will only go so far.
