Panthers sign K'Lavon Chaisson - Jets to sign Clowney ?

Recommended Posts

Seems as if the Panthers have signed their pass rusher in K'Lavon Chaisson and they were the other team in on Jadeveon Clowney. Seems like the writing is on the wall that he will be a Jet, unless another team enters in. Not a bad replacement, with what will be much less money than Huff.

I am liking the defense and special teams we are putting together, but that’s nothing new. Add Williams/Boyd/Davis and another OT, heading into the draft, and we will be looking pretty good. Alt/Olu looking more likely, with the Chargers activity this week.

(Obviously need Rodgers to come back, which we will hopefully know on March 26th)

Would mean they freed up the Mosley money for another DE despite talking up McD as if he's the next Derrick Thomas

Should have figured out a way to get creative and keep Huff

2 most gaping holes still unaddressed:  LT and WR

Reading is fundamental

If Huff can't play the run imagine a 210lb DE, they're bringing in Clowney because he's at his best stoping the run.

It's the place that makes the most sense for Clowney. The Jets give him a good chance to win and remember - the Jets had 1 issue on defense and it was their run defense. Clowney will put up 10 sacks but his run defense... that helps a lot

^This.

The Jets were the 3rd best defense in the NFL (yds/game), with the 2nd best pass defense (yds/game), despite having the 8th worst run defense.

This was mostly because the Jets O was so bad teams ran the ball a lot.

I suspect we're going to see a lot of the same this year.

Sounds like even more reason to beef up the run defense.

Signing Chaisson doesn't mean the Panthers are out on Clowney (he's from South Carolina, for what it's worth), and the Ravens may still re-sign him if he's not happy with his other choices.  I'm not saying he won't still be a Jet, but it's not a forgone conclusion at this point.

The Jets didn't have the 8th worst run defense. I always say this - but you get yourself into trouble looking at total yards. You have to look at stats that control for attempts, as they are much more telling. Yes, the Jets gave up the 8th most rushing yards in the league, but that's because the NYJ offense was awful and kept putting them back on the field. The Jets gave up the 8th most rushing yards in the league against the 3rd most rushing attempts (517) -  and the most in the league was only 4 more (521).

FYI, the Jets were tied for 10th in the league in rushing yards allowed per attempt (4.1) with Pittsburgh, SF, Carolina, LAC, and Indianapolis.

Or….yknow….they just didn’t want to give a pass rush specialist who can’t defend the run 3 years at $17M?

Whether they believe in McDonald -which I’m sure they do - is irrelevant. They still need a body. Not only is Huff gone but so is Lawson. Why cry over bringing in a good player?

Am I wrong to assume you’re rooting for McDonald to fail?  That’s the vibe I get.

Clowney was on a 4.5 mill deal last year. He’ll get similar money this year. He may have some name recognition but he is by no means a big time free agent signing. The money was freed up for another addition, probably to get a WR…Clowney would just be another low cost DL depth signing.

People seem to hate McDonald and want to see him fail. They want to blame that pick for the reason we couldn’t bring back huff. It’s weird, considering what we say from year 1 to year 2 with jj, that people don’t have any faith what so ever in McDonald.

Wouldn’t that then make the quality passing stats not realistic then too?

I would think committing more up offense is the better takeaway there.

Sure, our bottom-feeding team needs help in multiple spots, but this is a Ja’Daveon Clowney thread.

He’s good at run defense.  The statistically worst part of our defense regardless of how you look at it (total yards allowed, rush yards per attempt, sh*tty offense).

Yes, you shouldn't use total yards for passing, either.

But the Jets did have a very good passing defense, using the more useful stats.

For instance, last year, they were 4th in the league in yards allowed per pass attempt (6.1). They (barely) trailed only Cleveland (5.9), Baltimore (5.9), and KC (6.0).

They were also 3rd in allowed completion percentage (60), trailing only Cleveland (57.4) and New Orleans (59.7). And also 3rd in opposing QB rating (76), trailing only Baltimore (74.6) and Cleveland (74.7).

Then, you have the advanced metrics. For instance, the Jets were 3rd in overall defensive DVOA, trailing only Baltimore and Cleveland.

huff wants to be a starter & play a high % of plays ... that is not happening in this defensive system, huff would have been part of a rotational system which he clearly wanted no part of... huff is bye bye ... Let It Go. ;-)

Agreed.  It would be a joke and show a bias to the DLine over Offensive needs.

Somehow I think Saleh just doesn’t get it.  I envision him in JD’s offense pestering for more D when everyone on this planet knows Offense wins in this league.

Just like last draft when he was ecstatic we took a pass rush specialist.  You don’t think he wasn’t calling for that.

Just like him making the case to keep CJ on a 2 year deal than making hard decisions.

JD is culpable as well because he doesn’t put his foot down.

anyways that’s how I see it :)

More money spent by the Panthers. How much more money will they have? Can they afford to pay Clowney 10mil a season?

Their OL was worse than ours last year. They lucky Bryce wasnt injured last year. They need to get a boatload of OL in the upcoming draft. No way they paying Clowney now.

So it would be bad to replace a 10 sack guy at $17 million with a 9.5 sack guy whose better against the run at a fraction of the price?

And of the 8 or so billion people on the planet, exactly zero of them have said McDonald is Derrick Thomas.

Clowney is way more versatile than Huff
