Damn, sucks to be him. Its only misdemeanors though.

is that all?

come one, can you imagine if someone at your work got arrested one day? It seems like it is so common place that these guys are expected to get arrested and expected to get DUI's.

Not to be racial, but anyone else see a pattern?

Bears running back Cedric Benson was arrested late Saturday night near Austin, Texas, and charged with boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest, both Class B misdemeanors.

According to a sergeant from the Travis County Sheriff's office, Benson, who played at the University of Texas in Austin, was arrested by the Lower Colorado River Authority. A LCRA spokesperson said that Benson, who failed a sobriety "float test" (an abbreviated version of a field sobriety test) on the boat, argued over taking a follow-up test on land and refused to put on a life jacket. LCRA police attempted to arrest Benson at that time but he refused to cooperate and was pepper sprayed. He was booked at 11:24 p.m. Saturday and later bonded out, the sergeant said.

Benson, who had his 2007 season cut short by a broken leg, was in jeopardy of losing his starting spot even before the arrest. The fourth-overall pick of the 2005 draft has struggled through his first three seasons with the Bears, failing to post a 1,000-yard campaign while averaging just 3.8 yards per carry. Benson averaged a career-low 3.4 yards per carry last season, finishing with 674 yards on 196 carries with four touchdowns in 11 games started. He missed the final five games with the leg injury.

The Bears sent a clear sign that they wanted more production from their running back by selecting Tulane's Matt Forte in the second round of this year's draft. Forte's ability to get to the outside and catch the ball out of the backfield were dimensions the Bears missed with Benson in the lineup, although Benson showed flashes against Seattle and Denver last season.

Its one thing to be boating while drunk, but how dare he refuse to put on a life jacket!

the mother effer deserved to be pepper sprayed.

Why is this news? Who cares? The guy did some drunk boating. Everyone I know who has a boat does that. I wouldn't exactly start calling him Pacman.

he's a professional athlete. Thats why its news...

Also, everyone you know failed a sobriety test, resisted arrest, refused a land sobriety test and got pepper sprayed?

I'm glad Im not a boater. its sad that we have people as dumb as you and everyone you know getting drunk while boating.

Gotta agree here.

He may be a all kinds of a bust, but drinking on a boat & then driving it - like virtually every other boat owner in the world does with regularity - isn't the reason why.

You call me dumb but you are the one passing judgement on a guy for doing what if anyone else did, it wouldn't even be a blip. You also have already determined that what you read is absolutely 100% accurate. I have a little less faith in the media than you I guess and a little less judgement of others for doing things that are commonly practiced by the judging public. You don't know anyone who has a few drinks and drives their boat? Please! Let's be honest here.

You know you're drunk when you're getting pulled over by the coast guard.

The LCRA (Lower Colorado River Authority) is not the Coast Guard. The LCRA manages the Lake Benson was boating on, which is simply a dammed section of the Colorado River.

No I dont know anyone personally that drinks and drives a boat drunk. No. And I am being honest.

I call anyone dumb who thinks its ok to drive a car or boat drunk. Yes.

And whether the rest of the world does it or not, it is a news story because he's an athlete in the NFL.

The only judgment I passed was anyone who boats while drunk is dumb.

Dont get all high and mighty on me. He failed a sobriety test. He refused one on land. He resisted arrest. He was pepper sprayed. He screwed up.

Hey look, when the pigs pull you over, regardless of whether its just a shakedown or it legitimate, it's over.

You have nothing to gain by being belligerent.

Just cooperate and try to be polite--- they might let you off the hook.

But if you start talking sh*t, you take an otherwise standard procedure operation that ends in a ticket or what not, and turn it into a situation where pepper spray, stun guns or even bullets get involved.

People with low IQ's have a hard time following simple instructions. Throw in some alcohol and/or drugs, and it always ends ugly.

I don't like cops, and I do my best to avoid them. But when I'm confronted by them--- I cooperate. And I don't care how screwed up on drugs or alcohol I may be. I have no choice.

But some people are just too damn stupid to grasp that concept.

this may be redundant (didn't read the entire string of posts) but Benson demonstrating that he's another RB bust goes to show you that RB's are a big gamble at the top of the draft.

It simply seems that it's possible to find excellent RB's in the later rounds.

Glad Oak took DMC so we didn't have to play roulette...

I'm not a fan of Bensons, but I agree with with JF. Just about any boat that has gas in it has alcohol on it.

Sorry Instant, but my bet is that nobody is going to become a bigger bust than Leaf for a long, long time.

Benson hasn't done much over his short three year career, but he also wasn't expected to be great, he was expected to be good. Its a shame Chicago wasted all that $ on him. You saw the writing on the wall last season when he was just down right pathetic. I still don't understand why they passed on Mendenhall.

Mendenhall is basically a clone of Benson in terms of physical ability IMO.

he was a top 5 pick

Your point? He was fourth overall and a Running Back. Sorry, teams expect more out of the Quarterback position, especially when they were being compared with Peyton Manning. Leaf's legacy gets worse each year as Manning continues to set records and win more and more games.

I don't know. If he loses his starting job this year & doesn't regain it with another team (or doesn't at least get significant carries here & there like Dayne), then he's damn close to being a Leaf-like bust. It's not like injuries were the cause (like Wadsworth, taken 1 pick after Leaf). This kid has just sucked with his play & the "I'm awesome" attitude he arrived in Chicago with. Thomas Jones (oddly enough, who was once considered a huge bust himself) took such a liking to Benson's attitude that he popped him one. Not saying that's the best course of action, but that's how Leaf's teammates felt about him as well.

He at least did a decent job as the #2 guy behind Jones once. Leaf didn't, but then QB's aren't afforded that kind of opportunity. Leaf is only more famous he was considered to be a prospect on a par with Peyton Manning & the Chargers traded a lot to move up enough to grab him. The on-camera meltdowns to reporters didn't help any.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson was charged with boating while intoxicated after failing a sobriety test and resisting arrest that required officers to use pepper spray before dragging him ashore Saturday night, according to police.

If found guilty, Benson faces up to six months in jail and $2,000 for each class B misdemeanor. No court date has been set. In Texas, a BWI charge carries the same weight as a DWI.

The former Texas Longhorn, however, said he was not drunk and did not resist arrest.

"I was not intoxicated," Benson told the Chicago Sun-Times. "There was alcohol on the boat and others were enjoying themselves, but I wasn't drunk."

"They gave me a field sobriety test, told me to say my ABCs and told me to count from 1 to 4 up and down," Benson told the Chicago Tribune. "I'm thinking, I passed all the tests, did everything right. Then the officer told me we needed to go to land to take more tests. I politely asked him why we needed to go to land to take more tests when I took every test. Then he sprayed me with mace, on his boat.

"I'm not handcuffed. I'm not under arrest. I'm not threatening him. I'm not pushing him. I'm not touching him. And he sprays me right in my eye."

Benson was released from jail early Sunday on a $14,500 bond. He said in the year he has owned the boat, he has been questioned by lake police six times, according to the Tribune.

Benson was operating the boat with 15 passengers aboard when he was stopped by a Lower Colorado River Authority officer for a random safety inspection. He failed a field sobriety test on the officer's boat and was uncooperative when the officer tried to take him ashore, the authority said.

"When Benson did not pass the test, he presented himself as a threat to the officer and argued about whether or not he would be taken to land to have a follow-up field sobriety test performed on land and refused to put on a life jacket," the authority said in a statement. The officer had to use pepper spray to subdue Benson, a move the running back doesn't understand.

"Even after they pepper-sprayed me, I have no idea why they did that. I was cooperative," Benson told the Sun-Times. "I asked them several times why they did that and they didn't give me an answer."

Benson then refused to leave the officer's boat and authorities had to drag him to a car to be taken to the Travis County jail, the authority said.

Benson's account differs. He told the Tribune that he was not near his family when the police restrained him.

"Nobody saw what he did to me," Benson told the newspaper. "I started screaming for my mother to come. That's when they put me under arrest. And the officer threw a life jacket over my head.

"Once we got to land, the Travis County police grabbed me and kicked my feet from under me. So I landed on my back while I was handcuffed. They held me down and held the water hose over my face. I couldn't breathe, I'm choking, I'm begging the cops, 'Please stop. Please stop.' Then they picked me up and dragged me backward toward their car. And I'm still being polite, asking them, 'Sir, could you please allow me to walk like a man to your cop car?' They just kept dragging me on."

Chicago coach Lovie Smith said he's still trying to figure out exactly what happened.

"... any time we're talking about one of our players getting arrested you're disappointed in it," Smith said Sunday at the end of the Bears' three-day rookie minicamp in Lake Forest, Ill.

Bears officials said general manager Jerry Angelo was out of town Sunday and unavailable to comment.

"Right now it's one-sided, and I would like to know exactly what they're basing their allegations on," Benson's lawyer, Brian Carney, told the Tribune. "It's very, very early. And we still haven't had a chance to evaluate what exactly they think that they have.

"Those allegations are untrue," Carney added. "I think it's a shame that they proceeded the way they did. I can tell you right now that we're going to resolve this. We're going to work through it. And we're going to maintain our position that this was inappropriate and that he's not guilty of any of these things. Cedric was extremely cooperative with these officers. He complied. He performed their tests that they asked him to do."

A spokesman for the NFL said the league was aware of the situation and is investigating, according to the Tribune.

Benson, who said he plans to return to Chicago on Tuesday, told the Tribune he talked to Smith on Sunday afternoon.

"He knows I'm going to take care of my business," Benson told the newspaper. "I always handle anything that I'm dealt with. He just stressed the fact that whenever anything like this comes up to call him first."

Benson told the Tribune he is about 98 percent healed from the ankle injury that ended his season in 2007.

"This is tough to deal with because you're guilty until proven innocent," Benson told the newspaper. "My name is blasted out there like I was fighting these police officers or something. That totally was not the deal. I'm not stupid."

Benson has had legal problems before.

He was sentenced to eight days in jail in 2003 for a misdemeanor trespassing charge after forcing his way into an apartment to look for a reported stolen TV. In 2002, misdemeanor drug and alcohol charges against him were dropped.

Benson rushed for more than 5,500 yards and 64 touchdowns at the University of Texas, going for 1,000 yards in four straight seasons.

The 25-year-old has done little since the Bears took him with the fourth pick of the 2005 draft.

As a rookie he didn't beat out Thomas Jones and rushed for 272 yards in nine games. He was more effective the next season while sharing time with Jones, going for six touchdowns and 647 yards.

Last year, Benson took over as the featured back after Jones was traded. He rushed for 674 yards, four touchdowns and 3.4 yards a carry before going on injured reserve in November.

In three years with the Bears, Benson has rushed for 1,593 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging 3.8 yards a carry. He's also missed 13 games.

He's Leaf-esque.

I blame the Bears.

Why draft this kid when they have TJ at age 27 or 28? It's not like it was a pressing need at #4.

At that point Thomas Jones wasn't the Thomas Jones we know now, the Jones who ran very well for Chicago in '05 and '06.
