Former Union football standout to suit up for Albany Firebirds

January 30, 2009 - 6:54 PM

The most prolific running back in Union College history will be suiting up for the Albany Firebirds this season.

Arena Football 2 assigned three players to the Firebirds roster today. Among them: former Dutchman Thomas Arcidiacono.

In four years at Union, Arcidiacono set school records for touchdowns and rushing yards. The former Columbia High School standout was recruited by D-1 programs, but chose to stay close to home.

Now he'll get to play pro ball close to home, too. The Firebirds kick off the season March 27th.

The Bloomington Extreme announced the signing of four players Tuesday, including two Arena Football League veterans.

Defensive end Antonio Ficklin, a 6-foot-1, 275-pounder who played in college at San Jose State, was with the San Francisco 49ers for training camp in 2005 before playing for the Green Bay Blizzard. Ficklin played in the AFL for the Grand Rapids Rampage and the New York Dragons last year.

Horsemen Introduce Lorenzen as QB

Updated: Feb 10, 2009 04:12 PM

Former UK quarterback Jared Lorenzen will play for the Kentucky Horsemen next season, the team announced Tuesday.

Lorenzen was introduced as part of the team's preseason press conference.

"I met with them and about two weeks or a week and a half later, I was down. I couldn't not come back to Lexington and play, I had way too much fun when I was down here before," Lorenzen said.

LEX 18 first reported that Lorenzen was considering joining the Horsemen on Saturday.

Lorenzen did not play football in 2008 after he was cut from the Indianapolis Colts roster during training camp. He played for the New York Giants from 2004-2007.

Lorenzen said he is hopeful that his time with The Horsemen will, "serve as a springboard," back to the NFL.

stop putting the AFL threads in the wrong section. They go under other sports not Jets/NFL. This has nothing to do with either the Jets or the NFL.

I know people hate his threads... but seriously... posting about a former multi year NFL player in the NFL section is really not a problem... your just getting all pissy for nothing...

Quincy Carter Won't Play in Valley

HIDALGO - The Rio Grande Valley Dorados have ended their professional relationship with former Dallas Cowboys' quarterback Quincy Carter. Carter had been signed in December of last year to be the team's quarterback for 2009.

NEWSCHANNEL 5 was first to report on Monday that there were problems developing between player and team. We were first to raise the issue that Carter would not be playing this season.

The official reason being given for the change of plans is a unanimous vote by AF2 owners at weekend meetings. They ruled to disqualify any player on an Arena Football roster as of May 1, 2008. Carter is one of three players signed for AF2 this season, who played in the major Arena Football League in 2008. Arena Football, the major league, has suspended play and operations for 2009, largely because of economic issues. The AF2 owners wanted to protect their league from an influx of more experienced indoor football players.

The Dorados are now left in a hunt for a new quarterback with training camp set to open next month.

HIDALGO, TEXAS --- The Rio Grande Valley Dorados of arenafootball2 (af2) today announced that quarterback Quincy Carter will not play for the team in 2009 due to af2 eligibility issues.

Based on the Arena Football League's suspension of play for 2009 and an effort to maintain af2's developmental mission, players who were active with AFL teams after May 1, 2008, will be ineligible to play in af2 this season.

"We're disappointed," Dorados General Manager Grant W. Buckborough said. "We know Valley football fans were looking forward to seeing Quincy in a Dorados uniform. He's been a big part of our marketing efforts. That said, af2 has been a developmental league for the past nine years and it will continue in that role. Since we fully expect the Arena League to resume play in 2010, it would be unfair to have Arena League-level players inundate the league and force out younger players looking to advance."

Carter started the last three games of the regular season for the Kansas City Brigade in 2008. He completed 51 of 89 passes (57.3 percent) for 575 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions. He signed a two-year extension with the Brigade on June 23, 2008. He asked for, and was granted, his release from that contract on October 20, 2008.

The Dorados return to Dodge Arena for their sixth season of af2 action. The team's home opener is on Saturday, April 18, vs. Bossier-Shreveport. The regular season begins on the road on Saturday, March 28, at Corpus Christi.

Season tickets are available now by calling 956-843-7825.

QUINCY CARTER NO LONGER A DORADO

Dorados lose Carter due to league rules

HIDALGO - At the news conference last December announcing his signing with the Rio Grande Valley Dorados, Quincy Carter posed with a purple No. 3 jersey with his name printed across its back.

That's about as close as Carter will get to playing in a Dorados uniform.

The Dorados announced on Tuesday that the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback will not play for the team this season because of arenafootball2 eligibility issues.

At their league meeting this past week in Nassau, Bahamas, af2 owners voted on a rule that prohibits players who played in the Arena Football League after May 1, 2008, to play for any af2 team this season. Carter is among those players as he played in a three games for the Kansas City Brigade last June.

Calls to Carter were not immediately returned.

"It's unfortunate for us and our fans," Dorados general manager Grant Buckborough said. "But I understand the league's take and there's not much we can do about it. This is a single-entity league and the league office is the one that assigns the players to us."

Developing players for the AFL is one of the main reasons for the af2's existence. This past December, the AFL announced that it would suspend its 2009 season as it tries to develop a solution to its economic problems. The availability of AFL players left without teams for a year created a buzz among af2 clubs.

"Some teams wanted to sign AFL players," Buckborough said. "And if one team did it, everybody's going to want to do it. Some owners were upset about it, that it goes against what the league's all about. So, it was brought up at the conference."

Speculation of the ruling kept Carter on the Dorados' suspended list since he joined the team two months ago. RGV coach Marty Hammond said that Carter was disappointed when he told the quarterback of the league's ruling.

"I just told (Carter) what the deal was," Hammond said. "He just said,

af2.com has been providing fans with an in-depth offseason report on each of the league's 25 member teams. We begin the home stretch with the final Division to be highlighted – the East Division of the American Conference. Today's featured team is the Albany Firebirds

The 2009 af2 season will mark the triumphant return of the Firebirds to Albany, New York. Firebirds football has a rich history and tradition in the state’s capital region, but the re-branding of the team, formerly the Albany Conquest, goes deeper than the retro name, logo and colors. To complete the team-makeover the Firebirds are excited to welcome new Head Coach and former Albany Firebird Tony Bowick.

Bowick has four years of arena-football coaching experience that includes stops in Arizona (2008), Chicago (2007), Albany (2006) and Grand Rapids (2005). The first-year Head Coach and Director of Football Operations has built a young and versatile team that is deeply rooted in the Capital Region; the training camp roster boasts twenty-two players that are 25 or younger (19 rookies) and 12 players who played college football in New York. Bowick is confident that he has put together a crop of hungry talent that can play all over the field and that Albany fans should recognize from the start of the season.

Though many of Albany’s players are new to the af2, the Firebirds were pleased to retain six players who have played for the Conquest over the last few years. Highlighting the returning talent are second-year players Norman Bauer (OL/FB) and Jose Harris (FB/LB) and fourth year player Kenny Williams (WR/DB). Among the Firebirds’ top prospects are a pair of rookies out of the University of Albany, Irani DeAraujo (WR/LB) and Trevor Dupont (FB/LB).

Capital District sports fans have already embraced their new team, as evidenced by a spike in season ticket sales relative to last year. Management and fans alike are eager to reach the af2 playoffs for the first time since the 2003 season and the franchise is confident that its new name, logo, coaches and players will do just that.

Brewster, Butler join ex-Rampage coach in af2

by Brian VanOchten | The Grand Rapids Press

Thursday February 26, 2009, 2:00 PM

Carlton Brewster and Kelly Butler had been all set to suit up for the Grand Rapids Rampage this season.

The two former local high school standouts had reached verbal agreements to sign free-agent contracts with the Rampage and report for the start of training camp -- until the Arena Football League pulled the plug on its 2009 season due to financial problems.

Brewster (Creston) and Butler (Union) since have followed former Rampage coach Sparky McEwen to arenafootball2. McEwen is preparing to begin his first full season and second overall as head coach of the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz, with Brewster and Butler set to play for him this year.

The Rampage also had reached agreements with a pair of former Grand Valley State University standouts to participate in training camp -- offensive lineman Brandon Barnes and defensive lineman Derrick Jones. The Rampage also own the AFL rights to former Lakers standout wide receiver Erik Fowler, who spent last season on the Detroit Lions practice squad.

Here's a list of players the Rampage had reached verbal agreements to bring into camp before the AFL abandoned its season:
