Boozer76 Posted April 20, 2010 Share Posted April 20, 2010 Gholston had no choice. With the signing of Jason Taylor, Gholston was the odd man out at OLB. Personally I don't think he's gonna make it as a 3-4 DE. He can't add that much muscle naturally in suvch a short time, and I really doubt he would allow a speck of body fat on his frame in order to be heavier. He's just too vain. Well, besides the obvious that he just has sucked, yeah I would say they did. Thomas is the starter, Taylor is the backup and PR specialist. Gholston and his millions would be buried, meaning he would have no shot to even come close to proving the lightbulb might even flicker this season for him. He's going to put his hand on the ground in a 3-4, presumably minus some -cough- "speed" and get mercilessly buried by 335 lb. tackles. His only hope in the NFL is to play DE in the 4-3. The former first-round pick has been working out with the defensive linemen for weeks, sources said, and now the Taylor signing all but clinches it. The team will wait to see how things shake out in the draft before making it permanent. Gholston, the sixth overall choice in 2008, was drafted to play outside linebacker in the base defense and rush the quarterback on passing downs. But he has yet to record a sack in two seasons, earning the "bust" label. He's entering the middle year of a five-year contract that pays him $21 million in guarantees, arguably the worst money the Jets ever spent. Rex Ryan inherited Gholston from the previous coaching staff, promising big things for the former Ohio State standout. It was one of the few bold predictions that Ryan failed to deliver. The move to defensive end means Gholston is one step closer to the door. In Ryan's 3-4 scheme, the end is a non-glamour position. The ends have a two-gap responsibility, tying up blockers so the linebackers can make the plays. It's believed that Gholston will serve as Shaun Ellis' backup. Ryan, speaking Tuesday night to reporters, said he plans to use Taylor, Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas in a rotation as outside linebacker. He never mentioned Gholston. Ryan wants to keep his pass rushers fresh for the fourth quarter, with the hope of avoiding some of the late-game meltdowns that almost ruined the Jets in 2009. The dude is strong enough to battle the heavy-weights. This just might work if he gets up to 275. Shouldn't be a problem. I applaud the move. An easier contract to trade possibly? It is now being estimated that the Jets advanced Gholston future salaries of 6.28 million in March, 2009, which will be treated as a signing bonus. Gholstons base salaries were reduced to $1,900,000(2010), $2,000,000(2011) and $2,000,000(2012) to reflect the advance. It is being estimated that on April 19, 2010 the Jets advanced Gholston future salaries of 2.445 million in a contract renegotiation. Gholston's new base salaries are $2,250,000 (2010), $555,000 (2011), and $650,000 (2012). We are attempting to clarify if the bonus will be treated as a signing bonus or as a roster bonus. As more details are leaked we will update Gholston's status. http://nyjetscap.com/index.html interesting my interpretation is easier to trade/easier to cut... the rookie deal had all sorts of leverage for Gholston. my guess is got paid, they changed the contract back to a "normal" NFL deal, where the team can cut him and no penalty. jason or another could explain it better but the contract was before was guaranteed salary... which meant he had to be here and/or he had to get paid. so for VG he got about $2.5 Mil two days ago (good news on any Monday) but from a football perspective making a transition like this in 1 year is tough, he might not be here opening day.Im not optimistic on his frame to handle more weight, but we will know the story when he shows up to Cortland. *** the more optimistic viewpont: VG could still be a pretty good lineman in Rex's system. use him inside on passing downs even if he doesn't get much bigger, 6'4" 270 is big enough to pass rush inside at 3rd and long. Let's play him as a 4-3 DE, where he will go up against... wait for it.... the same 335 lb. tackles. Actually, I think VG will do quite well as a DE in either scheme. Physicality is not his problem. Learning how to develop football instincts at OLB is his problem. Vernon needs to be point and shoot. DE in either scheme has far fewer keys than stand up OLB. I think he will suprise us this year. Well, thats not a fair assesment at all. As a 3-4 de you must pack the size to attract double teams and not be taken out of the play. Were just having trouble on where and how Gholston will put the weight on. To me, Id much rather have a 300 plus 4-3 defensive tackle than a 3-4 olb trying to put on weight to get only up to 280.
