Dyer: #KeepRex — The Fans Have Spoken, And They Want Ryan Back

December 24, 2013 3:31 PM

#KeepRex

It is the Twitter hashtag that is sweeping the nation, or at least the Tri-State Area, all in support of New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan and a fan movement that is embraced by hundreds and thousands of fans who want to see Ryan return. Through five years with Ryan, the Jets made consecutive AFC Championship Games for the first time in franchise history. But he’s been unable to build on that success the past three years, seasons where the team hasn’t even made the playoffs.

What can be said about these 7-8 Jets is that they don’t quit and they don’t listen to their critics.

In the preseason they were picked to hold up the rest of the league, picked to be bottom-feeders expected to get three wins. Instead, they rolled off to a 5-4 start. Then when adversity hit after their bye week and they lost three straight, the Jets didn’t tap out. They responded with a win over an underrated Oakland Raiders team and they were in it against the playoff-bound Carolina Panthers on the road two weeks ago.

And this past Sunday, they could have caved in after falling behind 10-0 to the Cleveland Browns. Instead, they came back for a win that ensures them a better season than the year before last. That Browns team wasn’t bad and the Jets started off with a cold offense that couldn’t move the ball. Despite that, they showed heart and pulled off the win.

The Jets didn’t quit, something that is a testament to their head coach — and only their head coach.

Now the fans won’t quit on him either. This was the Ryan they saw who led their team twice in as many years to within a game of the Super Bowl. And it was the same Ryan who had a dramatic fall from grace those three years after, where a combination of hubris and some bad contracts led him from hero to zero and now potentially the chopping block.

But a pink slip would ignore what these #KeepRex fans know about their head coach, that he is the best thing to happen to this organization since Joe Namath. In Ryan, they have not only a head coach who is a defensive mastermind, but one who cares. This team, this organization, is not a stepping stone for him.

The Jets are everything to him. This team, this franchise is his very pulse.

Cut open one of his veins and green and white pours out, along with some Krispy Kreme residue. But he bleeds the Jets, this franchise and the fans, and not every coach out there cares so passionately. This is the man who, in his first year as head coach, cried when he thought his team was eliminated from playoff contention. It is also the head coach who defends every player in his locker room in the face of criticism.

That Ryan cares isn’t enough to give him an extension, a lifeline for one more year here. That his team hasn’t given up with nothing to play for shows that he still has the juice to communicate with this team, to get them back into the postseason again. His team was given up for dead before the season started; this rebuilding year was supposed to be his last season in New York.

Instead, he had the Jets playing meaningful football in December. The fans are now behind him. It remains to be seen if management sees the potential for a Ryan renaissance too.

The message is simple and doesn’t need 140 characters to sum it up.

#KeepRex

Rex Ryan's Future With Jets Remains Unclear Despite Support Of Overachieving Team (POLL)

AP  |  By DENNIS WASZAK Jr.

Posted: 12/23/2013 4:42 pm EST

NEW YORK (AP) — If it came down to a vote of players, media and fans, Rex Ryan would be back with the New York Jets next season.

In a landslide.

But the court of public opinion will likely play very little into the final decision by owner Woody Johnson and general manager John Idzik. Ryan's status as coach of the Jets is still difficult to call.

"We're working on Miami, and that's where 100 percent of the focus is," Ryan insisted Monday.

It could be the final game of Ryan's five-year tenure with the Jets (7-8), who have failed to make the playoffs for three straight seasons. Ryan still has one more year remaining on his contract, so the speculation that the coach is in his final days with the Jets could be overstated.

Neither Johnson nor Idzik has commented, and that has led to debates, discussions and arguments whether Ryan deserves to be back. Ryan also declined to comment on whether the owner or GM has spoken to him about his future.

"Guys," Ryan said, "I think the entire organization's committed on trying to find a way to beat Miami."

Several of Ryan's players have used the word "love" when talking about their feelings for their coach during the last few weeks. Many fans have taken to sports talk radio and social media to show their support, with one even starting a petition that had gathered nearly 200 signatures on the site change.org imploring Johnson to keep Ryan.

The hashtag KeepRex on Twitter has also picked up some steam since the Jets' 24-13 victory over Cleveland on Sunday.

"It's just one of those things where he really cares about his players," wide receiver David Nelson said. "Players appreciate that. Players know and they respect him for that. They believe in him and they respect him and they play hard for him.

"I think it's just the mutual respect he gives his players."

Several national and New York-area football columnists have presented compelling arguments why Ryan coming back should be a no-brainer. No. 1 among them is the fact Ryan has squeezed seven wins out of a team expected to have a tough time approaching last year's 6-10 squad.

Despite the overwhelming show of support, Ryan reportedly told his team Saturday night that "word on the street" is that he's out after the season. There was also a published report that said Ryan was angry that the team has begun considering possible replacements.

"I'm not disgruntled about anything," Ryan insisted, while neither confirming nor denying the reports. "I'm excited about the opportunity that's in front of us, which is the Dolphins."

Ryan was retained last season when Johnson fired GM Mike Tannenbaum, a surprising move considering many anticipated the Jets would start from scratch — including the coach. Instead, Idzik was hired under the condition that Ryan would be his coach, at least for this season.

Now, Idzik could be looking to hire his own coach, as is usually the case with NFL GMs. But Idzik is also looking for the "right" coach.

"He's a player's coach, a guy that we all love to play for, we all love to compete for," rookie quarterback Geno Smith said. "We all play for one another around here and it's a very close-knit bunch. Rex just has continued to be himself and that's the reason why we love him, and that's the reason why we continue to go out there and work hard in practice and continue to play hard."

In a short video posted on the team's website of Ryan's postgame speech Sunday, Johnson could be seen smiling and clapping as the fired-up coach celebrated the victory. While that could be merely trying to garner clues from body language, there's also this to consider: If Johnson's preference is to keep Ryan but he allows Idzik to make whatever move he sees fit, the heat on the GM could be immense if the franchise takes a step back without Ryan.

Idzik would also, in a span of less than a year, be the guy who traded the popular Darrelle Revis and fired Ryan. They would be bold — and mostly unpopular — moves, and decisions that could define Idzik's legacy.

But for six more days at least, Ryan will continue to treat things as business as usual.

"Well, that's easy," Ryan said. "I have a job to do."

**** the fans speaking - keep Rex because it's best for the team and there's no better HCing option out there according to Idzik (who's had a full season to evaluate just that among whatever else).

Can you put this in hashtag form please? Otherwise, it doesn't register with People In The Know.

I'd rather just put it into a two step, fail safe program:

1 FIRST DETERMINE TO FIRE REX

2 THEN THINK ABOUT AND HIRE NEW COACH

I think the better plan would be to TRAID REX FOR IMAGINARY ESTABLISHED SUPERCOACH WHO'S WON TEN SUPER BOWLS AND IS AVAILABLE LIKE I DON'T KNOW IS VIC LOMBARDO STILL ALIVEEEE

Like a hundred Twitter users!!!!!!!!!!

IDK T0m.   The poll on the Jets blog had 1,600 responses, and over 85% of them  want Rex back.   That's a fair sized sampling.

The poll I posted last week on NJ.com  had about the same ratio.

Savage in another thread said at JI  it's 75% pro Rex.

Right or wrong, considering how fickle Jets fans are, after 3 non playoff years.  I'm stunned.  That's overwhelming

Here's how those poll numbers happen:

1. Benigno apes Francesa, and Francesa said Rex should be back three weeks ago.

2. Benigno is the Voice of the Drive-By Jets Fan who tunes in on Sundays to "check out the Jets game."

3. Drive-By Jets Fan, believing he came to this decision independently, tells his office buddies, "Rex should be back."

4. Jets beat Cleveland, polls spring up on websites.

5. #KeepRex becomes a thing.

6. Print media, short of stories, jumps on seemingly populist narrative.

In short, the singular reason people think they want to keep Rex is because Mike Francesa, who hasn't watched a complete Jets game since Parcells quit, told them that's what they should think.

You listen to way too much sports talk radio.

Ryan should be back because the team is in a great position for 2014 right now with him.

LOL   C'mon T0m.

Your making an assumption with the "drive by Jets fan" stuff, that you are much more informed then the people that respond to these polls.

People who hang on Jets message boards are hardly "drive by Jets fans".  They are people who range from informed hobbyist,  to  obsessed.  It doesn't necessarily  make them smart, but they do pay attention to what is going on with the Jets.  They for the most part spend way to much time on these boards.

Lets face it.  As much as people on JN consider you the genius Jets guru, the poll on J N is still running against you.  If you can't influence the pollsters on J N, what little effect could Benigno, and Francesa have?
