Last Thursday on PFT Live, former Buccaneers quarterback Josh McCown opted not to name the teams that had approached him about possibly joining them in the wake of his sudden availability. But the short list of potential destinations for a shot at starting were obvious: Buffalo, Cleveland, and the Jets.

According to Adam Schefter and Mike Rodak of ESPN.com, McCown has taken a trip to Buffalo, with the goal of working out a contract on Monday. It’s a smart move by the Bills, since it would tie up McCown before 32 teams and most agents descend on Indianapolis for the Scouting Combine.

So why wouldn’t McCown wait to see what else emerges in Indianapolis, since it’ll still be three weeks and one day until the other free-agent quarterbacks are available to be signed? However, even if the rest of the class can’t officially be acquired until March 10, plenty of winking and nodding will happen in Indy. If McCown doesn’t bite on the best offer from Buffalo, the Bills may emerge from their trip to Indiana will a wink-nod deal to eventually sign someone else.

Speaking of the rest of the class, the Bills’ interest in McCown jumbles their potential pursuit of Mark Sanchez. The impending free agent played for the Jets for five years under new Buffalo coach Rex Ryan, and many assumed Ryan would try to woo Sanchez to western New York.

Maybe Rex will still do that, with Sanchez and McCown leading the depth chart — and 2013 first-rounder EJ Manuel being put on the trading block.

Rex said that Buffalo will have the # 1 defense in 2015.

They probably will if you use that foolish "yards allowed" as the metric to determine the best defense.

Bills will also lead the NFL in points allowed in the final 2 minutes of the half and the final 2 minutes of the game.

How many seconds did it take to score on the Pats D right before the half in the Bowl??

my question is, free agency start March 10 how is Buffalo allowed to sign free agents now? can somebody explain?

The other free agents technically don't become free agents until March 10th. They are still under contract with their 2014 teams.

Bilal Powell becomes a free agent on March 10th. Through March 9th he's on the Jets and we therefore have exclusive negotiating rights. No one other than the Jets can talk to Powell until March 10th, when he becomes a free agent and the Jets have no more rights to him than any other NFL team.

A player who gets cut becomes a free agent immediately. There's no waiting period to sign him unless than a very brief waiver period (for younger players with <5 accrued years) where the worst teams get first cracks at signing him. McCown's in his mid-30s and his availability therefore isn't subject to a waiver process.

McCown was cut right now so he is a free agent right now. He can be signed by anyone. Same with Chris Johnson, who we likewise just cut.

***edit. OK CJ was a bad example. JetsFanatic pointed out we didn't cut him.

So when you are released you don't fall into the free agent category until the start of the new physical year is that what you are saying?

Yes, he was released.  As opposed to Chris Johnson, who's option was not picked up. Therefore, on 3/10/15 Johnson will become a free agent when his contract expires.  The difference being the Bucs released McCown, the Jets have not released Johnson, they are simply letting his contract expire.

We did not cut Johnson what we did was not pick up his option therefore, when his contract expires on 3/10, he will become a free agent. Johnson is still a Jet and is not free to sign with another team till 3/10.

The notion that Belicheat is a good defense coordinator was put to rest years ago. He's not, so when his defenses fail it's to be expected. With Rex, the debate is still open

If Belicheat had Sanchez and Geno as his QB's, he'd be running the film room for the TN titans right about now

Sanchez and Geno would be All-Pro QB's under Belichick.

BB won 11 games with a High Scool QB, can you imagine what he would do with a QB drafted #6 overall?

Belicheat missed the playoffs with a QB that made the playoffs 2 years later on a significantly less talented team

Sure it does.

They are coming off a 9-7 with one of the best defenses in the NFL.

Improve the QB play and they are legitimate playoff contenders.

You think they will get better than this? Not with McCown.

Kyle Orton   # QB
