Jetdawgg Posted June 22, 2015 Share Posted June 22, 2015 DirecTV (NASDAQ: DTV) and the NFL have been hit with a class-action suit, alleging that the bundling of games in the NFL Sunday Ticket package violates antitrust laws. The suit, filed in a California federal court by Thomas Abrahamian, says Sunday Ticket subscribers shouldn't have to pay several hundred dollars for the pro football league's entire spectrum of out-of-market games just to follow one team or see an individual game. "The league and DirecTV offer NFL Sunday Ticket only as all-or-nothing," the complaint alleges. "Purchasers of NFL Sunday Ticket must buy all out-of-market games for all teams even if they are only interested in watching the games of a particular team. And since my local TV area broadcasts the Jet games when it does not conflict with the Pats, which is about half the games, I wind up paying full freight for half the Jet games. And since my local TV area broadcasts the Jet games when it does not conflict with the Pats, which is about half the games, I wind up paying full freight for half the Jet games. True. There are always a couple games that you don't have to pay for. For me, they play the Cowboys.. free. They play a Sat game.. free Any Monday night game.. I get the jets every week in my area and still bought the NFL package for two years for fantasy purposes. I stopped because that's too much to pay when I get the jets anyway. NFL does a good job of putting the best games on prime time anyway. But if I didn't get the jets in my area i would buy the package no question. It has to be the same concept right? Yes. The NBA and MLB saw this coming a long time ago, which is why they started offering single team subscriptions way back. The NBA has been doing it for close to 10 years now. There is recent precedent for this with the NHL lawsuit, which got settled. DTV and the NFL are going to lose this one. That case was a little different because it had more to do with blackouts, but given the examples set by the other leagues, this is happening. That said I would probably continue to buy the whole Sunday Ticket package because Im also a football fan. When the Jets arent playing I watch the "best" game on at the time. Then allow customers carte blanche to follow there teams for the full season. This alone would add an easy 5 million or more new subscribers. Sometimes even a free year but I still dn't like the fact other TV outlets can't have the option as well creating some competition and lowering the price ..way to may companies get away with this sh*t. More people would subscribe, sure, but DirectV is paying them a premium because of all the money it brings in keeping subscribers. They'd lose that premium. I live in NJ. I can watch every game yet I still get Sunday Ticket. Watching all games on my phone and watching whatever game I want is great. A little negotiating every year and the price is usually 150-180. DirectTV paid the NFL $12 billion last year to extend their deal for 8 years. It's hard to imagine streaming subscriptions generating more than $1.5 billion per year. If they charge $200 a year they would be gambling on the hope that over 7.5 million people live out of their markets and are willing to shell out that type of money. What kind of lunatic would turn down $1.5 billion in cash for that risk? Remember that with the single team subscriptions, there is only one market because games will always be on locally; so it's only fans who don't live in their area. Transplants. The bad news is that AT&T bought DirectTV last year. So the only thing that would have opened things up for the way that MLB and the NBA do things is DirectTV going under. And AT&T is a bottomless pile of money, so that's not happening. What's even sadder is that the owners are mostly old goons and their franchises are licenses to print money, and Goodell is a moron when it comes to this stuff, so there's nobody with any foresight as to where this is leading. It's a bad combo of everything because the league is so ******* lucrative right now and because of age and stupidity, they have nobody flashing the warning signals. Here, the Jet games are pretty much always broadcast free unless they conflict with the Pat broadcast. Most seasons that boils down to 8 Jet games or so that are broadcast for free. Il Mostro Posted June 23, 2015 Share Posted June 23, 2015 Not only would I jump at the chance to buy Jets games only, I would love for this purchase to be made directly from the NFL or one of its affiliates. I am held hostage by DirecTV just because of Sunday Ticket. The only alternative is to have a credit card with a foreign billing address and a VPN (showing your location as that country) for purchase directly from the NFL. GreenPond Posted June 23, 2015 Share Posted June 23, 2015 I'm a yearly subscriber for GamePass and alway choose the "All inclusive" type of package for about 260€, because the "Follow your team" package costs a laughable 50€ less. And since I'm watching about 100 games per season I would pay for the bigger package anyways. In case of a lost lawsuit maybe they'll just offer a cheaper follow your team type of option which will make the people still buy the more expensive one, because the little money you save is just not worth it.
