So much for Kevin White's optimism about a return to the field.

Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace announced Saturday that White -- the seventh overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft -- has a stress fracture in his shin that will require surgery. White will begin the season on the team's PUP list and could miss his entire rookie season.

Pace said that White suffered a setback in his recovery this week, prompting the need for surgery. The team confirmed that White developed a stress fracture in his shin during OTAs. The hope was that rest and rehabilitation would solve the issue. The discomfort returned this week and coaches noticed a change in White's gait.

By remaining on the PUP list, White is guaranteed to miss at least the first six games of the regular season, though it appears the Bears anticipate a longer absence than that.

The news comes less than 24 hours after White said he was ready to return to practice.

"I feel I can play. But you've got to look at the coaches, trainers and if they say, 'Kevin, give it another week,' that's what I have to do," he said Friday. "Hopefully we'll get some good news and hopefully I'll be back out there very soon."

The Bears drafted White with the vision of the former West Virginia standout replacing Brandon Marshall as a top target for Jay Cutler across from star wideout Alshon Jeffery. With White out of the picture for the foreseeable future, veteran Eddie Royal will assume a much bigger role in the offense.

New Bears coach John Fox was expected to lean on the run more than his predecessor, Marc Trestman. That might be especially true now that the Bears have lost White, who was expected to make an instant impact as a rookie. This is an extremely tough break for a team in transition.

Feel bad for the guy, he was the player I wanted to Jets to draft with their first rounder. I know you can't predict injuries but that Leonard Williams pick just keeps looking better and better.

Word!

The Richardson fiasco, The only other player on the draft board that was a possibility over Leo... and he's out for the season.

Now if only we took Bridgewater last year.

And the kid has some serious talent too, hopefully he can bounce back from this. He can really get up there and catch the football.

And when you hear that #5 pick Scherf has been moved inside to guard because of his struggles at tackle ... it just shows there is no such thing as a sure fire pick in the draft.

Wow I didn't hear of that, that's incredible. That was a reach by Washington and everyone knew it at the time.

Not everybody. F you recall there were quite a few here that wanted us to draft him if he fell to #6. A freaking guard with the 6th pick in the draft. A GOOD draft.

Guards are readily available in FA every single offseason, and there isn't one in the whole league making $10M per (even with inflated/non-guaranteed fluff jacking up the avg).

I remember myself saying if Scherff was looked at as a franchise tackle than it's worth the pick, but most didn't. I remember a lot of projections had him going in the mid first round. I do remember many thought he'd be a good pick for us though. Still seemed like a reach by Washington with Williams still on the board, which nobody thought he'd still be there.

I don't remember who said what and I'm not going dumpster diving for goodies. But I remember a lot of the rationale being if he doesn't pan out at tackle then he can just play guard. IMO at #5 or #6, he's either a LT or pick someone else.

New Orleans Saints running back C.J. Spiller underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Friday but is expected to be back for the team's regular-season opener, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter and Mike Triplett.

Another surgery for a player that was talked about possibly coming to the Jets this past offseason.

Wow a lot of bad news injuries throughout the league.

The Minnesota Vikings suffered a huge loss Saturday night before the first series was even done.

Starting right tackle Phil Loadholt tore his Achilles' tendon early in the Vikings' game against Tampa Bay, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, according to a source informed of the injury. Loadholt was visibly upset as he was carted off to the locker room.

Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Julius Thomas suffered a stable fracture in his left hand during Friday's 23-21 preseason win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"The good news is that it's quick healing ... The tough news is that he is going to be out probably the rest of preseason," Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said. "But hopefully, if everything works alright, he'll be back ready for the first game."

The Giants are quickly thinning out at safety: Mykkele Thompson left the game and did not return with an Achilles injury, the team announced. Coach Tom Coughlin said after the game he is worried Thompson might have an Achilles tear.

Heres another:

The Washington Redskins are down another tight end.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden announced Saturday that tight end Logan Paulsen will have surgery Monday to repair a turf toe condition. He is out for the year.

Paulsen suffered the injury in practice last week and traveled on Tuesday to meet with the specialist. Gruden's announcement comes two days after starting tight end Niles Paul suffered a season-ending ankle injury. Gruden said Saturday that Paul's loss is "a major blow."

Maybe the Redskins are dumb enough to give the Jets next years 1st for Amaro?

I will forever be thankful that the Redskins let us get Williams.  LOL.  #5 overall for a f'ing OG?  LOL LOL LOL

It's early but it's definitely looking like a great pickup for us. The Williams pick sandwiches inbetween a guard and an out for the season receiver.

Quietly, yet inexorably, the Bullets (my pick for when their name eventually gets changed) are becoming the NFL's worst franchise.  Draft blunders like that are only accelerating the process.

The Bullets, good prediction. I doubt their name changes anytime soon, but I do agree with you their moves have been questionable. Pretty sure I'm going to the Jets Skins game in October so I'll see them first hand.
